Are you Faster With a Wheel?

I would assume I'm faster with a wheel as I haven't used a controller since GT3.

Ditto and TBH I'm pretty sure I had a wheel with GT2 as well(The first Logi with Vibration(Driving Force maybe?), Tho I have had all Logi's better wheels over the year just skipping over the MoMo (went DFP) and the DFGT(Already had and still use a G25)

As a simracer i can't live without it anymore, and on GT5 (sim/driving game) it is exactly like that, i can't live without it...

Yep the same only add to that my TrackIR. I ALMOST bought the EyeCam as I am so used to the freedom of looking around while driving until I read it wasn't that great and can only be used in Arcade Mode(Which I haven't even looked at yet)

I'm still new with the DFGT, and it's my first wheel ever, but at least 9 times out of 10 I'm faster with it, maybe not for hotlapping yet, but over the course of a race, the throttle and steering control just helps to much.
Try driving slow and easy with the wheel a few times, with "simulation" steering, "power-assist" OFF, and FF set up to at least 5, if not 10, and just be gentle.

Of special note, I can corner Indy Super speedway at full speed (200-205) in a 650hp Z06RM on Racing Hard with the wheel, but with the controller, you actually lose grip by turning to hard, and have to ease up a bit.

I am still CONSTANTLY frustrated when I turn me head while playing GT 5 and my view doesn't move.

TrackIR is the most revolutionary bit of tech to come along for simmers in decades. I HATE playing without it. I can cope in a driving sim, but I refuse to play flight sims if I can't use it.

I'm faster with a wheel, tho I made all my licences gold except S8, S9 and S10 with a pad. S8, S9 and S10 were done just minutes after I installed my wheel after moving to an other house :).

Exactly the same for me.I bought it for IL-2 but use it in everything I can possibly use it in.

I dont know whether or not im faster with a wheel, but i know using a wheel is a hell of a lot more fun than DS3, even more so with the premium car interior view :)

I had been using a G25, but recently gave that away when I upgraded to a GT3 RS V2 with Clubsport pedals. Its like night and day, Fanatec rules (imho).

While it's not 100% that a wheel will make you faster, it is a 100% it will make you more consistent. (I mean a premium wheel, not a crap wheel with floppy pedals)

honestly, i have always been better on a controller. i've had wheels since the first GT FORCE (the very first logitech wheel for GT3) and in courses which require sharp turns, or if you ever are in a situation where you need quick recover (i.e. OVERSTEER), the controller has a distinct advantage in that you don't need to yank it over 450 *()#%$ degrees of rotation to go back straight. the GT FORCE was better because it was only ~200 degrees, but this 450 degrees of the DFGT is frustrating unless you find yourself never in a situation with oversteer or sharp turns (meaning you are the best racer ever, and never go on eiger).

another FRUSTRATING aspect is going in reverse. if you spin out, and you need to reverse back, good luck holding triangle (or any other button on the wheel) and turning the wheel 450 degrees. i can't do it in even 4x the time it takes me on a controller. they really need to implement an ability to SHIFT to reverse if you're using a wheel. a dedicated reverse button does not work well this way.

that said, using the wheels is almost ALWAYS more fun. until you encounter the above situations. and yeah, it's more realistic, but sometimes in a game, that's not what we want. otherwise the second we hit something or make the slightest error on course, our cars should all but stop functioning.

Oh for sure,i`m faster with a wheel. Except when trying to find god damn reverse in big hurry with my G25.

oh my god, i just about threw my wheel out the window today. if anyone has tried doing the GT World championship on that god damn Madrid course, especially having never been on that course before, I could not take any of the several hairpins per lap with this damn wheel. everything required almost a full turn left or right which forced me to move my hands off 9-and-3 and jam on the gas to straighten it back up again. i did not make my turns half the time. i ended up in 8th place after destroying the competition on the previous sarthe and 'ring races.

to add insult to injury, I spun out once and was T-boned by three cars in a row, each one pushing my car at some slow pace but enough where I couldn't get my car out to turn forward.

hairpins and reversing are NOT this wheel's forté.

Agree on reversing, but have had no problems with hairpins with wheel...
actually accelerating out of them is easier with wheel.

I just got my old wheel back from the people I gave it to when I got rid of my PS2...

I have my doubts it will work with the PS3...or at all lol...but we'll see.

If you master the two analog stick technic, you´ll be as fast as if you master the wheel. I´ve been driving like that sice GT1, and it works beautiful.

I think your asking the wrong question.
Now if you were to ask which you enjoy the most, I would say the wheel by far. If the purpose of the game is to simulate, again, the wheel.

Hi Guys,

First post here. been lurking in the forum for quite some time.

I have just bought a G27 together with the Apiga Wheel Stand yesterday. First time i have used a wheel to play any driving game at all.

I was very excited right at the start from searching for the wheel (its been out of stock) and the stand then the delivery. So i set it all up yesterday and was raring to go.

It didn't turn out as easy as i thought. The control was difficult at the beginning, especially when you tried to rescue the car from spinning. It took about 10 laps to get a hang of it. But not a master of it still.

Then came the braking distance. I found it more difficult to master the brake than the wheel. I often find myself braking too late, and then too hard. When i tried to brake earlier, then i was turning too slow.

Tried the manual mode. So often i thought i have pressed the clutch but i didnt press it deep enough; wrong gear shift is also a big problem. While i was shfiting the gear i tried to turn the wheel with one hand, no chance.....the feedback was too much and hey, 900 degree is not easy for one hand i realise (still thats what i do when i am driving a real car, but not at the same speed!)

Played for 1 hour. My head was spinning and i had to go to bed.

So, my experience with the wheel was not a great one, and indeed i was thinking of selling the whole set, simply because i can do way better and easier with a controller.

I am still struggling with this thought. may be i need more practice to start enjoying it?

No,I'm way faster with the controller(directional button)...I've learned that way!(nes,snes...)
LOL!!! I see that very few people here are using the controller...
