Aren't brakes meant to be changed earlier than this?

Check out the rest of the car as well, curbed wheels, damaged bumper and fender, cracked tyre, great owner.. But the brakes, insane!
Never do anything like this, to your car or to other motorists, extreme danger!

Not to offend any women reading this, but it could well be a womans car. My whole life, I've experienced that women drive their car until it actually breaks down, and then ask their (male human being in range) to have a look at it. They don't come early if it makes strange noises or has some warning lights on, for them, it's just "works" and "doesn't work". Great!

Example. My Daihatsu was previously owned by a female. Cambelt was due to change at 60.000 miles. In a safety inspection at 77.000 miles, the car failed with leaking dampers and cracked springs. She put another 1000 miles on it before it landed in my hands. Was the cambelt, due to be changed at 60.000 miles changed yet? Oh no, of course not. Some women think cars run at their own. Yeah, let's top up 5 year old oil with something quite different number. Cross your fingers, it will probably work. "What's that noise from the front (engine, obviously..)? Probably needs some sort of oil, or maybe the coupe needs air refreshener?"
There are of course woman better than many men also, but I'm yet to know them. Seriously, I don't think I know a girl into cars with real expertise going further than knowing the bragging rights of the Merc SL55 AMG (yup, never heard of the SL65).

ok, seriously, how does that thing stop? those brakes are just like crackers

Well, I would guess because it's metal to metal, the friction still makes the car stop. At another forum where this was posted, someone had a theory about the car having no pads at all.

I want to know what the hell she's scraped her wheels against like that. Parking next to a wall?

That's not wear, btw. That's VW's new Inverted-Slotted Rotor technology.

How the Heck did the driver manage to scrape the rims at the center ?.....

I had an 88 Daytona with the right front looking like that. I just knew I was getting rid of it in 2-3 months, and would'nt bother with the money on brakes, since they still worked.

I dunno what the most abused VW's are, New Beetles with women drivers or Mk. 1 Golf beaters. Poor thing, nice color though.

Simple, New Beetles. I feel a lot more sorry for that Beetle than this Mk 1. The only cared for New Beetle is the Oxford Edition New Beetle Spider.

There was some chick on pimp my ride USA with some sort of truck and her brakes where in the same bad condition as this car. Took it bloody ages to stop and not safe at all. And to think that the girl actually wondered why whenerever she braked the truck made a whole load of racket.

Do they have MOT's in america and wherever that VW is situated aswell?

Ya i saw that episode as well.

What is a MOT??

By the way it looks like someone took a sander to the wheel.

MoTs are basically European safety inspection tests. If I have understood correctly, it's up to each state if they shall have safety inspections in the US, and how strict they should be.

LoL, dude this is the USA, you can drive whatever you want as long as it has and engine and two headlights.

Seriously though, where I live they have no such thing. Heck I have never even taken an emmisions test.

I've often heard that most states have no equivalent to our MOT test, and it still amazes me, given that its so normal over here (in the UK).

The UK MOT (Ministry of Transport) test has to be taken once a car is three years old, and then annually after that. Its now quite a strict test covering the main areas of the car and in particular emissions.

Any form of commercial vehicle has an equivalent test, but these can be more frequent and far stricter.

I've lost a few cars after they failed an MOT and the cost of repair was too high to be justified, my Primera 2.0 GTe had to go after it failed badly on emissions and the cause was not clear. Sad to see that one go, but it did go to someone who got it back on the road again.

Wow, I think you would eventually notice, wouldn't you?

The most surprising part is that it is on a Vee-Dub. Most VW owners are pretty car-centric, and when anything goes wrong, they are usually more likely to get it checked out or fix it themselves.

Too bad really... That poor VW doesn't deserve that kind of treatment!

I thought that the driver will feel something through the pedal - pulsing pedal, for example, and hear an extremely loud griding noise.

Jeez...to think I was feeling guilty for just realizing today that the oil in my BMW is 4,000 miles old.

Now I feel better. I'll be changing it soon...3,000 miles is a conservative number anyway. :)

The car must make terrible vibration and scraping noises when it brakes. How the hell can the driver (probably a woman. A man driving one of those new Beetles is just plainly wrong) think there's nothing wrong with the car...?

Jesus, thats all I have to say. How the hell can you not notice that when your driving?!

Some states have rigorous inspections that go through a long checklist of not only safety features but other stuff like whether the car is street legal due to being lowered, or if it is too loud, etc. There are a few US states that are stricter than MoT. That vehicle is in Alabama, I believe, which I would not assume has a system like that, as it is a very conservative state.

*smirk* it's not a female thing, it's a dead broke as crap thing. i did that to a Lumina. i commonly destroy rotors. a center scratch on wheels means someone was srying to get as close to the curb as possible. here's its to make sure you don't get your door ripped off by a dumb-ass barreling down a tiny little side street reduced to half a lane because of paralell parking.

that Golf I looks like quite a few J-cars I've seen hanging around. that usually means they have 7 people in the car, and can't afford to replace the rear shocks.

in america...if its over a couple years old, it's cheaper to use the thing till it disintigrates rather than trying to fix...especially if it's a non american car, as parts have to come from the mother country.

concerning MOT's...the american version generlly concerns seeing if the minnimum run items are intact...tire tread and brake pad depth, and weather or not there are holes somewhere that will let in carbon monoxide. it's cheaper that way.

if it's a non american car, as parts have to come from the mother country.

parts from the Father land were too expensive (bimmer parts)

anywho, that is horrible, i have seen some other pictures like that before :nervous:

In Michigan, we have nothing to pass, if my car has insurance, headlights, brake lights, and signals (just talking basics), i can drive it :dopey:
