I'm aware that there is plenty of people who play previous AC games on the PS2 and the new CRA system looks really arcadish, here is a video in that shows some old fancy AC mechanics in action:

(expert controls and not so much CRA)

Its on twitter, released thanks to a mail request.

Just DL'ed the demo......

My how this game evolved since i last played it.
The graphics are very well done, they give off a Battlefield BC2 feel. Upon starting the demo you are given a choice of either a helicopter mission or a Jet mission, decided on the heli's just out of pure curiousity. The detail on the aircraft itslef is pretty well done, you can see each rivet and each panel on the fueselage. It don't want to spoil anything but it is a very very good demo. It's been so long since i played an AC title that i was very rusty but after a while it all came back and the widespread rain of death began. The only comparison i can make is a mix of the COD4 mission in the AC130 and BC2, meaning that you can zoom into the enemy yet still control the aircraft, it's pretty cool.

The jet mission features and F-22 Raptor over Miami and the ground detail is impressive.I found it hard to get used to one of the new features whic is DFM (Dog Fight mode) where you are close enough to the enemy to use your guns or close range missles. Again maybe it's beacause i'm rusty but i found it hard to maintain the target. Other than that i though it was damn awesome, so intense especially when an enemy has you locked on, it's not as easy to break away as in past AC title's.

Just some impressions for those who haven't DL'ed the demo. I believe tomorrow it will be released in Europe so some of you guys can give it a go.

I am definitley going to pick this game up. The Heli mission was very cool, and the graphics are insane, there are so many buildings and ground detail that i can say it almost looks like Flight Simulator..

Downloaded the demo here as well & I agree on maintaining the target. It almost felt throughout the demo that I was spending more time trying to stay on track with the target, then attempt to engage DFM mode & then stay with it the target til' he was gone. Repeat.
However, I'll attribute that to be being rusty as well as since I haven't played this series since AC5. The enemies definitely seem more difficult this time as a few missiles are needed to take a few down.

The one thing I have gotten is that you need to act quick with this game. The DFM circle doesn't stay open long & you need to watch what you're doing in that mode b/c it's easy to suddenly find yourself low to the ground in combat. At 1 point, it seems the demo hints at their being certain events during a duel that you need to pay attention to. And if you do happen to find yourself in a position to use the special weapon (usually 4 missiles), you need to fire quickly before the targets disperse. But as noted above, you may not take them all down even with direct hits, so you might have to engage them 1 on 1 afterwards.

BUT, I do like the DFM & I think it will encourage players to really use the machine gun instead of relying on some of the missiles which made some battles in the previous games easier, imo.

The ending of that mission also makes the plot in this game look very interesting.

Anyone know what time the PSN store updates in UK?

Interested in giving this a look.

If Mclaren was able to Download it, then its definately offcial that I'm getting (Hopefully today). I'm really interested in trying it out, though admittingly its been about a year since I've played AC and thanks to Namco, it wasn't on the PS3 :grumpy:

Had a couple of them on the PS2, just tried the demo. Enjoyable, nto sure I'd buy it though.

Didn't really like the demo. In the heli mission, it felt more like I was controlling the camera and the helicopter was moving around it.
In the fighter mission I had the feeling of watching a cutscene instead of playing, with all of the triggered explosions.

Not sure about PSN, but I downloaded it off the Xbox marketplace just after midnight.

I downloaded it off PSN earlier today.

Well then, that means I can download it then. Was unsure for abit.

Also, just completed this and posted on my friend's youtube:

Here will be temporal words(and just consider expert scheme opinions from me):

I found similarities with AC4 because I thought it will feel too arcadish(AC by default are arcadish but not as mush as After Burner for example), but It doesn't, I played AC04 recently and it feels almost the same, same pitch, roll and yaw ratios(maybe a bit too stiff but not as stiff as AC6), there is also the acceleration which is now more severe and is hard to stall on this game, the aircrafts seems to be too quick.

Now, regarding the new CRA/DFM system, it works better than I expected, specially with expert controls as I was mentioning before, it eliminates the tedium created by the "eternal looping" as I called it since the introduction of High-G turns in AC6, I forgot to mention that the High-G turn is present as well(which is something I truly hate, hence the reason of the eternal loops),DFM is basically minor tweaks in aircrafts direction, trajectory and missile timing which are well planted, is all about time, but something that bothers me is the scripted paths that aircrafts seems to do(Middle city-> Coast) which I found a bit annoying.

Generally the game looks incredible, the brown-ish style is more aesthetic which is to blame to MW games and so on, however in this game it fits, specially when you see the opponent disintegrating in a million pieces. There are a lot of nice details in the aircraft models, like for example the F-22 weapons bay and the detail on the missiles, the details on the city look incredible(even for a moded flight simulator) and the lighting works beautify.

Apart from that, the enemy seems to be different, they also counter manoeuvre missiles while on CRA(which is nice) and they do CRA on you(which is not nice), there are now flares which I like and dislike, they work best if the health doesn't recover(but sadly it does), sounds are absolutely nice and the new TGT_LEAD seems to be a nice middle term from standard enemies(although they are more like a CRA plane). And that's what I've been piling up from the Miami mission, which I like and I do believe that the Akula will be a promising enemy, I expect great things from it.

I haven't play the Heli mission long enough, there are a couple of control schemes and I found the second scheme a bit more "manageable"(doesn't feel like a floating camera, that is my gripe with the Heli mission). Same applies, nice graphics, surprising attention to detail on the ground but too arcadish controls, the level feels a bit weird and the intercom is just pure COD thing(but it fits the style), the heli dogfighting is nice but I haven't played that much so I cant give you more details about it, however I like that dogfighting model.

And that's the big picture I have stock up thus far, I need to play more the Heli mission, but there is also a bunch of tec demos that I'm studying, that is why I got cut from analysing the demo and giving my thoughts, here is one of the tech demos if you are interested(an early prototype of the game which really looks promising, jump to 3:13 to see what I mean), and that's it.

Apart from that a trailer for Multiplayer has been released, which showcases the potential of the new integrated gameplay systems(however I hate that they showcase such features from the game with the optimum control scheme):

They also showcase some colour changes abilities(apparently this includes different schemes) and of course more cooperative gameplay.

Having said that, I'm really looking forward to this game.

Well, it took some trying and tweaking the control schemes, but I managed to finish that bloody helo mission. :irked: Too much trouble, those things.. But the actual fighter mission was good once I found control settings that remind me of the old AC's. Those scripted moments however.. Annoyed the heck out of me.

its less than 500 MB.First Impressions is I like alot, the cockpit view in the hilo mission is very slow. What I love is that looks like the characters and the story line are somewhat credible and Important unlike previous titles, like previous titles though I love that AC is one of the last games to stick to the soundtrack Epicness of Yesteryears .Really love the soundtrack and the Fighter mission was well different not still sold on with the dog fight mode but I like that Namco added a new twist that adds creativity and it is a rewarding feeling when you shoot down a Plane.

It is a game I will be looking out for but of course won't buy close to release.I'll wait for an anniversary sale.

500MB, thats surprising! Thanks

Just played it, Happy to report the old controls from the previous games are back. Its abit weird though, it feels like its abit faster. I can't even slag abit when trying to get enemy lock and damn, it takes alot more to kill them. Still, feels like Ace combat.

Did I mention I got my PS3 fixed and back today? :D

Wow I might just have to dust off the X360 for this. If not, PC if it's possible.

I am enjoying it.

I totally agree with Leonidae@MFT's first comment up there.
Scripted moments detract from what I'm trying to do, and that's a bit of a letdown.

As for the Heli mission.......

I figured I was useless for the first 10 minutes, as all I did was get shot down, a lot.
I tried a few tactics, but as soon as I ran out of special missiles and had to use the standard ones, I was toast.
I began to think that I was just a poor player, and the helicopter missions were not going to work for me, and therefore I wouldn't be buying the game; as there's no sense buying half of one is there?

But then I started to get in amongst the streets, and use the buildings for cover, and take stuff out with the guns. Getting in close and dodging and weaving really worx with the chopper, and using the gunner at close range to take out the guys running about with RPG's is effective.
Before you knew it I was confidently finishing the level, and going back in for more.
I think I will look at my finances when it comes out, as this will probably fill the week before MW3 releases.
Always liked the AC games, and I think this one will join the collection at some point, even if I only rent it first....

:irked:👍

I once thought this was the last series that Namco hadn't ruined yet. Sadly, after playing the demo, its finally happened.
-The melodrama is still there but its a little tainted by being based in the real world. Somehow I get the feeling there isn't going to be some uber-super weapon at the end of the game. Its just not the same, I loved the silliness of the older games!
-The dogfight mode is terrible, on rails and scripted? Rubbish.
-The helicopter mission is ok but not great. I wasn't looking forward to the helicopter-gunner mission (as these kinds of missions are fairly overdone in FPS games already) but the Apache mission doesn't seem much better.
-The arrival of quick-time events? :yuck:
-I worry about the bombing and Spectre-gunship missions after seeing how average the helicopter mission is.

Its not completely ruined I have to admit. There are still some decent parts to this game and I'm 50/50 on picking it up. But it certainly appears to be vastly inferior to AC4 and 5 (didn't play 6 though I know it too was the old-style AC).

Namco - please stop trying to re-invent your games. All I want is a new Ace Combat, Ridge Racer, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Time Crisis...stop trying to fiddle with the basic formula of these games and just give me the old games with better graphics and new assets! I don't want these crappy new gameplay features such as dogfight mode in Ace Combat, or changing the theme of Ridge Racer to modded-street racing, or giant boobage in Soul Calibur, or grenade launchers in Time Crisis.
Ridge Racer V/Time Crisis 2/Soul Calibur 2/Ace Combat 5 were all heading the right direction - just keep releasing the same game with improved bits on it!

For every one person who thinx like that, and in some cases, I agree, there are a million who would say: "oh for god's sake, it's just another ace combat with some improved bits on it, why don't they do something new?"
Ultimately, they have to have a USP for each new game, don't they?

Otherwise only the die-hard fans will pick it up, and then some of them have grown tired of the genre, plus some won't even realise it's available what with family, life, work, commitments etc.....
I have enjoyed most if not all AC's and I didn't know this one was even being made until I found this thread last week......
They have to sell games, right?

As for the uber-super weapon at the end.... isn't there some reference to it when you destroy the trux escaping over the bridge at the end of the Heli mission?

I thought that was the set up for the uber-super weapon that will require you to fly round it, destroy all the towers as it tries to fry you from 400 miles away, take down the radar masts, get into the tunnel, head for the main structure, annihilate it's core, then knock the main firing weapon to the ground...... like the other games.... maybe I'm wrong, it happens a lot.

:irked:👍

Forgot to mention the Helicopter Mission. Damn, either I was repeatidly shot down or was not able to clear enough enemies before they destroyed allies. After actully deciding to use the terrain, that helped reduce being shot down.

However, using cannons and only cannons for the final objectives was a pain. Seems like its a much bigger pain and the ass to use cannons on here then it was in previous games. It made fighting the Hinds complete hell and taking out the trucks before they reached the area completely annoying. As far as controlling the helicopter, surprisingly the controls weren't hard to figure. infact, I actually remember the control from another game with a Helicopter (can't recall whic hit was) so I wasn't stumped as I initially thought I would be.

Yep, there is. One of the trucks has this huge explosion when you destroy it.

You do know that dog fighting mode is optional, right? You don't actually have to use it.
