actually, it depends on how u tweak the gear ratios. If you set em a bit lower than default, automatic would be the better option, because the computer is programmed to change gears at the optimal RPM thus giving you better torque and acceleration. And as for me...i like MT in the game because, as in real life...ITZ A HELLUVA LOT FUNNER!!

Why is this even a question? Without a doubt MT, if your going to use a real life simulator, I would hope everyone would use MT... I would like to see someone get in a real race, with a AT!!

I LIKE to use MT, but I generally use AT.
In GT1 and GT2, there was a discernable difference between driving with AT or MT, Manual Transmissions could accelerate faster, and could overrev the engine to smooth out shifts.

In GT3, as with REAL LIFE, the type of transmission you use dosent really have much of an effect. Automatic transmissions have gotten so good that there is no acceleration advantage, except for the consistancy provided by the automatic.

I feel that the Manual people are just doing it to tell themselves they are cooler. There is no advantage, and you just get stuck pushing twice as many buttons as you would otherwise.

Plenty of professional race series use automatic transmissions or CVTs. Any bracket drag racer has an Automatic, Several Formual Classes allow them, and from what I understand, many Solo 1 participants prefer them for their consistancy, and allowing for two handed steering.

For me, and in my opinion, MT is much more rewarding to use. Originally, I started out using AT. My brother convensed me to try MT and I've been hooked ever since. I feel to have more control in those big sweeping corners as well as faster braking with downshifting. MT has enhanced my driving experience and will continue to use it. When I race with my son (who's 9 years old), we set it up for AT, that's the only time I run with AT now.

The advantage is a more intense race, therefor getting more of my money's worth out of my PS2 and GT3.

Now Now boys, lets play nice... Its funny how much of a heated topic this really is... :argue: I think it has and will be for a very long time... Its all about personal perference... One day we will be in flying cars, and they will only have one transmissions, or no transmissions, and this agruement will be over... Until then MT rules!!!

I could be way out to lunch here but don't all new race cars have AT systems i know the new race trucks are AT and the newest subaru rally car has AT.

pushing twice as many buttons. anything to make the game more difficult. it is much for challenging, and therefore much more fun, when you have to push quote unquote "twice as many buttons." That just makes the game twice as fun!! i cant wait till parappa the rapper two, which is supposed to utilize more buttons than the original, all 8 buttons, instead of four from the old one. hmm, thats twice as many right? and this is gonna be like my number one game! thats what makes it funner, more buttons! and btw i dont think it makes me cooler, but maybe in a sense it does because im having more fun. isnt that what "cool" really means? thats what it means to me. and please dont get mad because i used parappa the rapper as an example, i realy think it is a good game

Brian... you seem to be some what of an expert on Car Transmissions?? Is that from years of experience in the automotive arena or just your opinion as of today?

I found this really interesting article on Manual vs Automatics and hopefully this will clear up any disputes concerning this subject.

That was a good article, but not complete. It left out high performance hydraulic clutch operation (ferrari paddle shift) and sequential automatics. My expertise is limited to what I have worked with in the past, my understanding of physics, my driving, and my vast quantities of reading. I'm 22, so I dont have "years of experience in the automotive arena" but I have taken every opportunity to work on cars that has come up since I was about 2. My immediate family arent gearheads, but some of the extended family are. (my uncle has an 8*2 BAY GARAGE at his house, its bad ass and bigger than the house)

I took several cars to the drag strip and found nothing consequential. I took an F090/s, the escudo, the opel calibra, A Viper GTS, an S2000, and a mini cooper (all stock) out and ran with both types of transmissions. After several runs on manual and no more than 2 on automatic, The manual transmission came out ahead on half of the cars, but it was the half with low revving engines. The margin was VERY slim (<0.1) in All cases except the escudo, which actually held traction using a stick. The manual advantage only came about after MANY MANY runs with a manual to learn the shift points exactly.

For an added bonus, I ran the trial mountain endurance race twice with an F1, and my fastest automatic lap was about 2 seconds quicker than my fastest Manual lap, plus my fingers were tired.

So there are my results. Take them or leave them.
The problem I have is that when I race somebody using my automatic, and they drive manual, they invariably accuse me of cheating when I win. My response is that I can not be held responsible for their incompetence.

You big fat cheater! Using a AT on your friends. What kind of friend are you anyways, cheating them like that?

Well, very good. We all now know that YOU are better driving a AT than a MT. With some serious button pushing a dedicated practice, you might find out that MT would be faster for you...., but you would have to do more than just some test. It would take some serious commitment on your part to give MT a go at it. That is of course if your bored and looking for a new challenge.

Here's another challenge that I found quite rewarding, drive in Third Person View with your left index finger on the "L1" button.
