Atari 2600 Games

I'm confused about some of the games on the Atari, for example in the game "China Syndrome" I understand you are removing radioactive particles from the nuclear reactor but why does an S pop up when you are grabbing them?

I have questions like this for a bunch of the games. Mind sharing? 👍
