ati2dvag.dll & that Infinite Loop

G'day guys,

Recently I've been having numerous occurrences of black screens (monitor shuts down completely and refuses to reboot), and on one occasion a blue error screen appeared (saying that the ati2dvag.dll was caught in an 'infinite loop'); both leading to the shutdown of windows, and both occurring either while I was watching podcasts or playing games; as of yet, when the computer is idle, no error has occurred.

I can't quote the blue error screen exactly, but from memory it said it had 'successfully dumped ... memory', and that windows had been 'shut down to prevent any further damage'. Of course, it also mentioned 'infinite loop...'

I did some research and found one site that recommended cleaning the chipset; however, when I opened up the case I found that the little fan underneath had become completely dislodged/(burnt?) from the card. Would I be correct in assuming this is the cause of all my problems?:odd: I do recall hearing strange sounds in the case a while back...

Essentially, my question is what should I do now? Buy a new graphics card? A new fan?

I've got an ATI Radeon 9800 series card (bought with computer 3-4 years ago); any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Dislodged as in not snapped on? I'm not familiar with the card's physical layout, but if the fan runs and you reattach it, you should be OK. But yeah, if the fan's not there, hanging off to the side, the chip will overheat into weirdness.

It may be a plastic snap-clip thing, maybe the clip's broken and it won't stay on. If that's the case, I'm afraid I'm not sure what to tell you about getting it fixed. I don't know where you'd get the right parts or clips.

What they meant by cleaning was that a lot of times the heat sink will fill with dust, obstructing airflow, but if the fan's not even on the chip, you have a different problem.

It appears, that after taking a closer look, the fan has burnt itself out of place; that is, what appears to be a plastic sheath around the fan arm has melted). Thanks for the quick reply! 👍

Better be calling ATI then. Not sure how if they'll be able to help you though since I'm sure that card is well out of warranty.

Indeed... Perhaps I should just take it in to the local IT place. They moght be able to order a replacement fan or something.
