Today was a bad day. I was in organic chemistry lecture and had the great misfortune of having a stinky person show up late and sit directly behind me. I could not breathe for the whole hour. I could not take notes because I had to hold my hand up to my face in a futile attempt to attenuate his nefarious stench.

Most of the indians and punjabs I know are at least decent and do not give off a smell. In fact, quite a bit of them take care to have a pleasant scent about them. Therefore, stinky Indian, why is it that you carry such an abominable odor? What’s wrong with you? You are the reason the stinky-indian stereotype exists. There are millions of good-smelling Indians living in the western world (mmm... ok, maybe thousands), yet somehow the gaseous waste emanating from your body makes up for all of them. You are offensive. You disgust everyone. You are a hazard to society.

And for all of your heinousness, stinky Indian, I’ve come to pity your situation. While sitting in class with your loathsome musk crawling through my sinuses, I soon found myself desensitized to any other smell. I realized your sense of smell is analogous to the moral sensibility of children raised to commit genocide. There is only one pungent, lurid stench-- only one reality. I would say you have been brain-washed by your own nose, but it’s apparent that you haven’t been anything-washed... ever.

If I must take some good out of this experience, I have to say that I gained a very strong appreciation for something easily taken for granted. Breathe your air with gratitude, folks. Don’t pinch your nose if, for example, you drive by a pasture with freshly-manured grounds. Instead, collect that air in a jar and save it for when you encounter a stinky fellow. The lesser of two evils might not work in politics, but I think it’s a pretty compelling choice for this situation.

As an added bonus, I noticed an acuity of scent upon the return to fresh air. Like the epiphany of Helen Keller, my nose freed itself from the crematory tandoor in which it was imprisoned for that dark, odoriferous hour. I smelled the rain and the trees, and it was nice. Then I got in my car and picked up the scent of rain-soaked upholstery, the standing water in the spare tire compartment, and the farts embedded into the driver’s seat. Sensitivity turned into vulnerability. Stinky Indian, you really bring out the worst for everyone. I’ve never experienced a compound level of stink like that. You cultivate a miasma that enduringly torments those burdened by your proximity. You are truly a guru-- an evil guru-- of olfactory repugnance.

So the question I’m asking the rest of you is how do we fix this? Someone should start a campaign to get rid of stinky people. In the mean time, there has to be another solution. I will evade when possible. But when you can’t evade, what do you do? How do you politely tell someone that they smell like everything bad in the world?

Look at this post.. I am not Indian. HOWEVER! I have shared my time with stank ass, NO DEODORANT WEARING americans.....and what I mean by americans, I mean white people.

Come on man. did you REALLY need to make a post about this?

/drunk

PS, I will come back to check on this thread once I have retained the, "sober status"

Just wow...though I think you do have to avoid it at all costs... I walk by some people and wonder if they shower or is it me...

There is some truth to this, but I've been told that religion prohibits them from using deodorant. Westernized Indians have adapted the use of deodorants and colognes/perfumes due to social pressure and such. I still come across Indians who stay true to their beliefs and majority of them do smell unpleasant.

Well, everyone produces body odor if proper hygiene is not prioritized. I go to school and some people stink because they get up and go, I go to the gym to workout and you smell people who haven't taken a shower.... add to the fact that they're sweating so the body odor permeates the entire area.

It's awful, but what can you do? Unless you have the guts to tell them right in their face that they smell, then you're more than welcome to. If not, you just stay quiet and complain about it. That's how it generally works.

I've yet to run into this. but most of the people I've been interacting with are middleclass/uppermiddleclass, or they are Americanized enough to bathe daily and use deodorant.

Diet can also influence the scent you give off. But from what u guys are saying, it may not be the scent of curry and spices wafting through the air.

If you're talking about religion it's usually hindu's who are the culprits. They usually smell like oil which can be repulsive. I've been with loads of arabs who all have either an odourless scent or very nice fragrance. Although it also depends on the specific person, wether they bother to wash themselves or apply any deodorants.

I hate stereotypes, judge the person by how they are. If they smell like horse ****, it's because they can't ****ing care for themselves. :yuck:

Well it's pretty rude to tell someone they stink. I don't think there is much you can do unless you don't mind being an a-hole

Hopefully an answer to the question I posed in my last sentence. Haven't gotten one yet.

No one is going to like being told they stink but if you really want to then suggest they change their deodorant or start taking baths a bit more regularly. I really wouldn't bring race into it at all.

No, it's not.

Dude, say this next time.

"Excuse me, I don't mean to embarrass you, but could you please move away from me? Your body odor is very offensive smelling to me and I can't concentrate on the professor's lecture. Thank you."

Do so in a whisper so you don't draw too much attention to the matter. If he doesn't move, then get up and move yourself.

I don't have the heart to displace him and make someone else suffer. Besides, he diffused through the whole room after a bit.

In the navy, the guys handle it among themselves when one of their number becomes intolerable to the rest. Fire-hose!

Probably not helpful for Omnis, though.

I'm taking this thread with pinch of salt as I don't think Omnisaurus is a racist.

I have dealt with people with extreme BO both at work and when I was in secondary school. I always found there was a major difference between ethnic groups. With some Pakistanis and Indians the BO seemed to be extremely stale (at least 3-4 days without washing).

I have to say that it was a very small percentage of people though.

I don't think he's being racist, he's just sounding off about a smelly guy sitting behind him, who happens to be an Indian.

He's not being racist, I sit behind an Indian girl in my French class and it just smells like, well, room in there. It is a quite funny thread though, but if a new guy came here and made it'd get locked. Probably...

Wow I won't even begin to pull apart how racially and culturally ignorant this is. I'm surprised this on GTP.

I thought I was clear in the 2nd paragraph that this is not about Indian people being smelly. It's about smelly people, a great deal of whom are Indians, and that it's unfortunate that they have to remind people of a stereotype that exists despite the majority of decent people that don't deserve that kind of reputation.

Throwing up the PC card is not helpful here. Not unless you sprayed it with one of those perfume testers.

Why not have a word with him after class?

"Hey man, can I talk to you for a sec? Not tryin' to be a dick, but there's no really nice way to say this: you got the funk, bro. Any chance you could maybe take your daily shower just before class? Thanks, buddy."

And if he gets mad or indignant, maybe get with a couple of classmates and take it up with the instructor.

We had a guy at work who was very smelly, and we were salesman in a store. So the poor customers would have to put up with it too. We just sat him down and told him how it is and the boss offered to buy a can of deodorant for him and if it got out of hand to just pop out the back and spray some. The funniest time was when a fellow female co-worker got sick of telling him to spray it, so she got the can herself and just walked upto him and sprayed.. only what made it funny was he was walking at the time so she was "chasing" him spraying the deoderant while complaining how much he smells., maybe its one of those "you had to be there" moments.

Anyway I would just be open with him, if he takes offense and gets upset thats his problem. Chances are its not the first and wont be the last until he changes or fixes the problem.

I don't think it's just the diet. I had an Indian bud in College and nobody ever complained about his smell.

And his home diet was all Indian food. I know, I used to eat over a lot.

It's undisputed that the traditional smell comes about partially due to the diet, the spices and sauces they use, in particular. Big deal if you're travelling to India or Pakistan... where being in an enclosed airplane cabin or bus with a bunch of locals can be... educational... but part of it is the bathing. The smell will only build up after a number of good sweats... if you bathe often, it won't...

And Asians don't typically smell. Malays are very fastidious about personal hygiene. Haven't noticed it with Orientals, either... Koreans may be addicted to spicy foods, but it's different spices.

Now... Americans... boy... do many Americans stink when they come down to the tropics. Stink of stale sweat... Just not used to the heat, I guess.

Diet is not the source, it just exacerbates the smell. If I smell, I smell really bad because I'm italian and sweat garlic water. But I don't let myself smell like that. This guy's essence of curry and funk is like bleach and ammonia-- not a good combination. I'm complaining that he stinks, not that whatever he does in his culture exacerbates the smell.

I smell like pie and rice, then. Which is inaccurate, I smell of Old Spice bodywash and distilled incredulity.

Food can alter your body odor. Especially curry. Which is why the odor of sweaty Pakistani and Indian men is so distinct.

But like I said... it's part hygiene. Those who bathe regularly don't smell.

Exactly. I wish I could explain this to my stinky classmate.

Thankfully the guy I sit next to in meteorology smells so little that I just now remembered I sit next to him.

I love you Omnis. I have been an Odor Offender in the past. Mainly during the early years of puberty. Sweat like a pig when I was in middle and highschool. Sometimes I just couldn't do anything about the smell because of where I was. Camping usually was the worse thing. 1 week at scout camp with no showers = smells galore. But as soon as I got home I would go take a shower.

While I think you shouldn't have really singled out a particular kind of person. It really helps drive home the point. You really are what you eat.
