I guess Audi is jealous of both the Mini Cooper and the new Fiat 500.

With recent reports that Audi still hadn't finalized the design of it's upcoming A1 mini, designer Gabriel Rabhi has shared his own thoughts on what it should look like. Rabhi has created a series of images for Fourtitude that show a new look for the A1. Aside from the now standard Audi grille and the upsweep of the lower body character line, it doesn't share much with current Audis. Unlike Mini and Fiat, Audi doesn't have a classic small car design to draw on for retro cues so Rabhi has combined typical small car proportions with some distinct design elements. Until we see the real thing from Tokyo in a couple of weeks, check out the car in various colors at Fourtitude.

Actually on second though it looks like the child of a Mini Cooper and Renault Megane.

Take note this is only a rendering.

That this is just feral. Unless it comes in a crazy S1 version it's not worth the light of day.

You might see a 2.0T version of it but I wouldn't expect anything crazier.

The Cooper competes with the Golf. The A3 is a re bodied Golf. A1=A3?

Can't say it looks any good. The grille does not belong, maybe because the rest of the car does not look like an Audi. It needs a major restyle IMO. And make everything behind the front wheel look like some concept I've seen before.

Everything else sounds great. A 2.0T S1 would be very cool. Too bad being an Audi about the size of a Golf will make it weigh about the same as my GTI. It will be fun outrunning a smaller car with the same horsepower though:tup::dopey:.

The Golf is a class size above the Mini. The Mini competes with the Clio, the Peugeot 207, Ford Fiesta etc. The Golf competes with the Megane, Focus or Madza 3 etc.

There are already pictures of the S1? I don't know how they would have that since that picture is just a rendering of what it could look like.

Also the Mini Cooper and I presume this car will compete with cars like the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Kia Rio, and Scion xD.

Ah yes I was meaning to post that. As long as Audi made it a fairly fast and sporty car I see no problem with S1. But I somehow doubt we are going to see one helluva fast supermini Audi anytime soon.

This is just a rendering – I’ve learned to never ever trust renderings (even renderings done by manufacturers themselves are usually way off). Not saying it won’t turn out like this, but…

I wish they would just remake the A1/S1. Group B car for the road = sick.

It looks pissed off that it's small and had a giant grille.

Apparently BMW now want to make a car smaller than the 1 series to fight the upcoming audi A1.

BMW have been shadowing audi alot lately. They dont seem worried about MB, yet talk about audi's every now and again.

BMW already has a small car...it's called the Mini Cooper. But I guess they could put some ugly design on it and sell it as exigeracer put it...the .5 Series.

Yeah it really makes no sense for BMW to make a smaller car. Maybe they feel that there are certain parts of the market the mini is unable to tap into because of its strong image!

No more guesses. No more renderings. We have obtained the first official photos of the Audi Metroproject Quattro concept, believed to be the first version of the Audi A1.

In an earlier interview, Audi Technical Development chief Michael Dick said the A1 would be "manlier and sportier" than the MINI Cooper.
And he was right. This car has a sleek, shapely front-end that seems to form a menacing grin, and rear tail-lights that virtually stare down trailing motorists. This car rides on classy, lightweight, ten-spoke wheels. Inside the cabin, the Metroproject has impressively clean lines, what appears to be paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, and a built-in MP3 player. On top of everything else, you can seemingly keep track of this car's status on your mobile phone!

The Audi Metroproject Quattro, has a battery pack in visibly mounted in the boot, and lit in tranquil blue lights with a charge indicator on the side. We had heard rumor that this concept would be a hybrid, and it certainly seems that way.
The supermini Audi A1 should be available with a turbocharged gas engine, turbocharged diesel engine, ranging in size from 1.2 litres to 2.0 litres. A base model with an 80 horsepower, naturally aspirated 1.4 litre engine is also expected to hit showroom floors.

With a base price at-or-below $25,500, Audi hopes their MINI-killer will sell between 80,000 and 100,000 per year. Audi has done such a good job with the design of this car, that sales of the Fiat 500 might also be affected. Although previously expected at the Frankfurt show last September, the Audi Metroproject Quattro concept will be revealed to the public in person at 10:30 a.m. Tokyo time on October 24th, at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show. Production on the Audi A1 is scheduled for 2009.
Dick also said, "When a father sits gladly in his daughter's car, then we've got it spot on."

Congratulations, Mr. Dick. We think you have it spot on.

Wow. This is the same company that made the original Audi TT?

(Note to the Audi Design department: Lay off the damn shrooms already.)

Rear view: OK, I can live with that.

Front view: Huge grille has to go, it ooks out of place.
