We've heard that Audi will be revealing the new A5 this week and it'll have and actual engine. Some teasers have been shared but now it appears we've got a full leak - Ars Technica may have violated an embargo and leaked an image of the new car as their article has been taken down:

Further news I was unaware of is Audi's new naming scheme as explained by Road & Track. This here A5 is "replacing" the A4 which I thought was a ridiculous idea until I read that all even-number models will become EVs, while odd-number models will stay ICE.

Another big change is that the A5 was borne as a couple - which was the traditional even/odd split among numerous brands - but now the coupe is gone for good. The A5 will now appear as a sedan and wagon.

The gas engine lives on for at least one more generation!

Edit: Apparently Motor1 posted spy shots of this new A5 wagon over a year ago but nobody cared because it's Audi. They also reported the new naming structure which I guess is old news from 2023 - again, nobody cared because it's Audi.

More images. Pretty sure the embargo doesn't end til tomorrow but this is what we got.

Looks good imo. Looks like an Audi. Nice shape, mean graphics. Much better than what BMW is slapping together.

Audi has finally succumbed to mask face - I knew it was only a matter of time. Aside from the Koreans, they were the last holdouts to bring the leading edge of the hood to the leading edge of the car. Just for that betrayal, I hate it.

RS5 and RS5 Avant. 630hp V6 PHEV but unfortunately is a fatty at nearly 2.4 tonnes.

2.4 tonnes
Holy ****. That's heavier than the D4 A8 L W12! Worse than that, it's the same weight as the fully electric e-tron GT! And that's curb weight, something Audi is always a bit too optimistic about; I imagine in reality it weighs 2500 kg.

At this point just rip the bandaid off and make them fully electric. Wanting this thing to have an ICE for the sake of "driving experience" is just idiotic at this point. Comparing it to the e-tron GT; same weight, same power, similar drivetrain dynamics with all the torque vectoring shenanigans, same amount of driver inputs (2 drive-by-wire pedals and electric steering), and the gearbox is tuned to be as smooth and unnoticeable as possible... Turn the music up just enough to cover the (by law very quiet) V6, put it on auto and I'd bet some of my body parts that they both feel exactly the same.

I will say, though, I do prefer the looks of the sedan over the A/S. The Avant is a bit too fat at the rear for me.

That was the first thing I looked up. Gross weight is supposedly 2520kg. Had looked up the B5 S4 Avant at 2120kg. Gross indeed.

They're technically the last to market with this concept. Everything else is either full BEV, full ICE or a big question mark (next alfa giulia). So Audi gets to be the good guys by not having an inline 4 and having a wagon at launch like the bigger and more expensive M5.

Damn, no coupe anymore? Well there goes my copium dreams of hoping Audi would get their crap together, realize they miss endurance racing, and making an RS5 GT3.

Ex-squeeze me? Baking powder?

The five-seat configuration is not appreciably more than pick-a-C-segment-hatch. It's not exactly outclassing the Renault Smegging Clio, at 351. The last RS4 Avant was 505/1510...

The ex-Audi engineer talks about the reason why Audi needed to go hybrid for this car. If it weren't for the hybrid, it would either not exist or be 10k Euros more expensive

In a nutshell, the EU before 2025 required manufacturers to have a fleet average of 4.89 L / 100 KM. After 2025, it is now 3.95 L / 100 KM. If they did not reach that fleet average, they would have been fined money per car sold. Which could have calculated to 3.4 billion Euros.

In comparison, BMW was paying 12,000 Euros in fines for their M3 Touring. After 2025, they would be paying 14,000 Euros. According to his numbers, the M3 Touring was initially 96,000 Euros but now is 109,000 so it appears they priced in the fines into the MSRP.

It's a very insightful video. He also mentions that they designed custom rear doors and rear quarter panels for the new RS5, which the other German manufacturers did not do because of how expensive it is to re-tool for a low production car

Also, according to a YouTube comment

Many people do not know that the allowed fleet average is also linked to fleet average weight. So making heavier cars sadly also allows you to pollute more. In fact the 500kg also increases the emission limit for this vehicle.

I like the fact they've done an Avant again, but I don't like the fact it's weighting 2,4 tonnes... there's a reason why all our roads are crap, and it might just be because the average family car is now weighing 2000kg.

And people call EVs heavy. My Model 3 is a comparatively svelte 1850kg at the kerb and can be brought close to the same acceleration as this via software for no extra weight increase.

This really is a daft time for holding onto engines.

First impressions of the RS5, they seem generally pretty positive about the car despite the weight
