Are you kidding?
For the first time, Audi Sport will offer a racing sports car specifically developed for customer use in the form of the powerful 500 hp plus GT3 version of the Audi R8 which will be available from autumn 2009. The logistics and factory space required for the AUDI AG customer programme will be created over the next few months in Ingolstadt, Neckarsulm and Györ.

"The R8 is the first production Audi bearing the name and genes of a successful racing sportscar and is therefore an excellent base from which to build up our first big customer sport programme,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "Ever since the R8 was unveiled we’ve been inundated with enquiries about a race version. With the Audi R8 we will offer customers a racing sportscar equipped with high-calibre technology and the typical Audi qualities, but which is nevertheless easy to handle.”

The Audi R8 conforms to the production-based GT3 regulations allowing the car to be fielded in numerous national and international race series.

Because the GT3 regulations prohibit the use of four-wheel drive the Audi R8 comes with the typical GT rear-wheel drive. The power is transmitted via a newly developed six-speed sequential sports gearbox. The suspension uses almost exclusively components from the production line. A comprehensive list of safety equipment guarantees the highest-level of passive safety. A modified front end and a large rear-wing generate the required downforce for the race track.

The Audi R8, which bears the project name "R16” within Audi Sport, was developed under the direction of Audi Sport. Mid August, the first prototype successfully completed a roll-out in the hands of Audi factory driver Frank Biela.

The first test races in various European racing series are scheduled for the 2009 season. Delivery to the customers is planned from the autumn of this coming year.

That looks hot!

Has those exhaust tips been peeling/bubbling some of the paint?

Except for the bubbling, the car looks amazing.

IMO this vehicle looks more function over form, which always makes me happy.

so hold on a minute...is this car a contender for the 'ring lap record since it is available to customers? if so then damn! this might get into the mid 7:20's. i hope it beats that ugly a** acr viper. and i might too because the viper wasnt geared for the ring and the driver was an idiot.:sly::)

No, it's not road legal.

Mid 7'20's!? it's a race car with racing tyres, it would be much faster than that.

Are you high?

First of all, the ACR Viper is definitely, and the majority by far will agree with me here, not 'ugly'.
Secondly, the ACR ran a 7'22 which is even faster than your far-off prediction of the Audi R8 GT3 (a sub-7min would be more accurate).
Finally, the race car driver who piloted the ACR did a brilliant job handling what is arguably one of the most spastically powerful rear-wheel drives in the world around an enormous track renowned for its sheer difficulty.

If you would like to hire one and try it yourself, please, don't be afraid to post a video when finished.

Since it's a powerful car, my 1990s mentality usually makes me wonder how come they don't make a proper GT1 car out of the Audi R8. Frank Biela will surely drive the wheels off of this car. We all seen what Biela can do in a top-flight Audi race car. I usually become a sucker for the multiple LED lights that outline the bottom and outside edges of the main headlights.

This car is absolutely hot. It would easily win with Quattro All-Wheel Drive. But with RWD, I'm sure it can still be as dominant of a car as... that other R8 that... raced in the ALMS and even went to Le Mans and won a few races there (sarcasm). This should be a killer car when it hits the track. I'd be interested in wondering if some could be made to campaign in the ALMS? Or if it's strictly for FIA competition? A trip to Le Mans with this car would be nice. Maybe I'm thinking too far ahead. Good luck to Audi taking on this challenge.

I just thought of something: How does Porsche feel about this? They make tons of money selling GT3 RSR to privateers, and it is easily the dominate car in the field of pretty much every FIA race with a GT3 class. How do the cars compare?

The Porsche GT3 RSR do compete in the FIA GT3 class, where the Audi is heading, but there is also a couple of Lambo Gallardos in that class, so I can´t really see that Porsche will actually say anything. Audi and Porsche are already going head to head in the ALMS, not in the same class, but they still do.
In the european GT3 series, Porsche is however not a dominant force. The Ford GT´s of Matech racing is the cars to beat!

It will however be different matter when they - and Audi will - develop the R8 GT3 into a GT2 car. Still a customer car then. And that also means - drumroll - that this car will most likley be in GT1 by at the earliest 2010!

Also notice it´s development name; R16. The 2008 spec DTM Audi A4 is nicked R14, so we can be pretty sure there is a R15 aswell - wich in that case is Audis new P1 Le Mans racer.

Its good to see Audi making an attempt in the GT class again. I can't remember when was the last time they had a GT class car for racing.... (is the TT LM even real?) Hopefully the car would prove successful in racing and hopefully convince Audi Sport to make the car into a GT1/GT2 car for Le Mans. Also I agree with Team666's comment, bring it on Audi. :D

In that case, I would hope GT2. GT1 is a dying class with the only competitors being Corvettes. Anyone else normally just seems to finish by luck or drop out. Plus, it would neat seeing Audi try and attempt at dominating a class where there's more than 2 opponents. It would also make GT2 a really exciting class if this R8 were to be thrown with the Aston V8, F430s, 911s, M3, & that possible GT2 Corvette.

I'd love to see another team shut those idiots up... I'm getting sick and tired of hearing how they are number one this, number one that.

Didn't Aston Martin shut them up already? Anyhow, I think its a shame that GT1 seems a little boring now since Corvette and AMR dominated the category. The Viper and Saleen are almost left behind during the Le Mans race. The ACO should have done something to the rule to make GT1 more competitive again. Hell, I don't mind if they let a few rules slipped by and let the MC12 and other supercars compete in GT1..... :D

The last kind of GT car Audi made was the R8C, a coupe version of the R8 LM car, wich raced at the Le Mans GTP class in -99, without success, I might ad. They did have TT DTM car, wich only ran DTM and the Nürburgring 24hrs.

Well good news for you then! Very, very likley, the current GT2 cars will have the option to upgrade to GT1, and the current GT1 and GT2 rules are rewritten for the most part. Most likely, the current GT3 cars will be easily upgraded to the future GT2 rules, and even GT1 rules.
This is what I have figured out about the new rules; the main difference will be aero and power. Any GT3 or GT2 car can supposedly be a GT1 with an aeropackage and some more hp. All cars that have an enginecapacity over 5,5 litres are automatically set for GT1.
2009 will be a "hybridyear", where current GT rules will have some restrictions to make the future cars competitive, and from 2010, the current cars are simply forbidden.

And Aston Martins. With the lead Aston finishing on the same lap as a Corvette the class isn't exactly uncompetitive, unless you're talking about the ALMS.

You act as if luck isn't a part of racing.

GT1 in the FIA GT series seems rather competitive to me, what with Maseratis, Astons, Corvettes, and Murcielagos all going at it. There's also SuperGT GT500, But that's less GT and more DTM.

Nice!

I'd be hoping for a GT2 car as well, that would make things infinitely interesting. Given a fair crack at the 911 and the F430, it would be one helluva race. Throw a Corvette and the Aston into the race, and my God...

Don´t forget next seasons M3 GTR! And seeing that there are two different developments of the Ford GTR, 2010 could be a very good season indeed!

My god! And here I thought the R8 couldn't get any better. Can't wait to see if they'll release a roadcar on that GT3 design.

Of course I'm talking about ALMS. If you're referring to the FIA, GT1 is always exciting, and isn't dominated by C6Rs.

You act as if luck isn't a part of racing.
Luck comes in by managing to finish in the top positions. Any other GT1 besides the C6Rs in ALMS seems to just finish, and in this day & age, just finishing a race doesn't really take luck.

I was talking about the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
