Embargoes are like rules, they are meant to be broken. This time around Auto Motor und Sport in Germany have sent out their January issue to subscribers featuring a rendering of an Audi R8 Concept with V12 TDI engine article. The story is still under wraps by Audi until January 13 when it will make its world wide debut at the 2008 NAIAS in Detroit.

AMS calls the Audi R8 V12 TDI a study model, but depending on feedback the car might just make it to mass production (hand built mass production that is). The V12 TDI engine has made quite a name for itself on the track in the R10 race car and will be featured in the upcoming Q7 V12 TDI. It is a proven engine and will obviously not burn your R8 to a crisp.

Some numbers from the article. The Audi R8 V12 TDI produces 500 hp with 1,000 Nm of torque, 0 – 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, top speed lies over 300 km/h and fuel consumption is rated at 10 liters per 100 km. Disadvantage of the V12 TDI over the V8 is that the little trunk space is entirely gone due to the V12 size and it weighs 100 kg more too.

The front fascia is altered on the R8 V12 TDI because the engine requires more cooling, which is achieved through the larger airducts.

Smart move on Audi's part. Offering a V12 will easily help keep the pressure off Gallardo sells. And even better, the car might be released by the time the Gallardo is expected to go under major changes.

It's a DIESEL V-12 at that. Finally, a supercar that can rip your house off it's foundation.

But ACERT still rocks. after all, (If I remember correctly) the V-12 they build at the Mapleton plant has four turbos and weighs about as much as the R8 LMP (Chassis, sans engine.)

(Interesting fact: Diesel V-12s are seldom seen until you get to vehicles the Size of Diesel Locomotives.)

Hey I just noticed it will be in Detroit, I'll be sure and get lots of pictures for everyone of course. Seems like an odd place to debut it thought. A European one would make more sense but hey I'm not complaining.

How exciting! I'd hope they'd cut the 100 extra kg out of the rest of the car to compensate for the engine. Either way it'll have mind blowing performance. 1000nm of torque. Pwoah! :dunce:

This is the R8 I've been waiting for. Everything before it has been a resounding "meh" from me, but a diesel V12? Yes, yes indeed. A "green" sports car that can easily kick enough ass as still manage nearly 30 MPG.

Loves it!

Although I've had a couple beers under my stomach, and I'm just as info-happy as the next car en thusiast, I've still got close ties to PR info. I still think it is wrong to break press embargos. You agreed to not share such info 'til a certain date, so why leak it to the publuic?

You must be drunk! :p

;)

I think everything I would say has been said. I'm just very glad to see Audi will be producing a diesel R8 after all.

Any possibility of seeing the engine in a Tuareg?

Wow...... this could be very interesting. But to be honest, I also really want to hear this thing run. Hopefully it doesn't sound like a normal diesel car, but much more like a supercar with a lot of grunt. 👍

Well, if it sounds anything like this...

^ I remember hearing one of those Audis at Goodwood one year. It was really weird... In the video it sounds like an RC car more than anything else!

I think that's mostly tranny noise it picked up. It was under braking, after all. From what I've heard from the onboards they sound like a pretty aggressive truck diesel. think a tuned Cummins or Power Stroke, taken up an octave.

Im not all that excited about this. A diesel race car is one thing,a sports car is another. The petrol R8 will be much better to drive, cheaper and lighter. It is an oddity though.

Probably not, it already has the monster V10 TDI made available (in limited numbers of course). The V12 TDI could make it in the Q7, but I doubt that as well...

Wow, that is increadible. Rather unussual sound but exciting non the less.

1000nm or 738 pounds foot of torque is fairly substancial. I wonder what revs thats at.

In all sober seriousness this time, I think that going against press embargos is wrong. Manufacturers release certain info at certain dates for a reason. Just going out and releasing that info isn't fair to the manufacturer at all. Plus, you'll end up without your press credentials and we're going to have less auto media available. Audi was trying to keep this car under wraps for a long time, but now the real unveiling won't be as special. Unfortunate.

Unfortunately everybody is getting worked up about the whistling sounds etc and think the R8 is going to sound like the R10 does in the vids. When i went to lemans last year the cars did sound like they were from the jetsons however those noises are mainly from the cars cuttig through the air, transmission and turbo noises. The R10's engine is just significantly quieter than the petrol cars so you hear the other sounds better. Durig the pit walk the day before the race i was fortunate enough to be standing 2 meters away from the winning R10 while it was having the nuts thrashed out of it. I can confirm that the sound of the engine is unique but its also very very bassy sounding engine. Dont expect it to sound like a UFO or something :)

Spec....

EDIT: i was looking through my lemans vids and in the following vid you can see that the first car (an r10) is very quiet and not all whistling sounds.

is it just me or does the photos of the R8 TDI in the first post look like it has a body kit on?

i still like the previous R8 more the lower skirt on the rear bumper kill the image, i personally don't look for too much performance in a car, i care more about its look. No that doesn't mean I'm a ricer, I'm someone who cares a lot about aesthetics in a car :)

"Like an artillery shell flying by, whispering death." -Automobile Magazine journalist.

It may be even quieter, what with the lack of a racing gearbox.

I (eagerly) anticipate this car (the diesel R8 road car).

word on the street is that a V10 petrol R8 will debut and not the V12 diesel. Apparently the V12 is too big and heavy for audi's liking.
