So I recently downloaded a trial of Sony's Acid Pro 6 and I don't like it at all, my keyboard doesn't want to interface with it all that well and it crashed way to many times for my liking. I really like using Acid Pro but with so many bugs in it I can't bring myself to upgrading to it.

I'm looking at FL Studio and possibly Ableton Live. I would also like to look into Reason for a few different things as well. I'm also not apposed to doing a particition (sp?) on a hard drive in order to install a Mac OS so I can play around with something like Garage Band.

So any recommendations? Mostly I will be using it to rip loops in order to work with my buddy on putting together some new trance tracks. Nothing hardcore and certainly I don't need it studio quality but I would like to put together a decent album. I need to be able to hook my MIDI keyboard into it with little problem.

No I haven't played around with it, but considering it's free I don't see why I should at least try it out.

Audacity doesn't do MIDI recording as far as I can tell. It also doesn't really do as much as I would like it to do, although it will come in handy from time to time I can see.

I also tried Mixcraft which is awesome and fairly inexpensive as well at $60.

I started on Ableton and am a huge fan. It's the easiest to get into and comes with great effects and instruments. I love its VST support which is a big deal to me because I do mainly all my work on VST's. It's sampling system is mediocre to be honest but you can always combo Ableton with a sampling program for a powerful combination.

Also, what kind of keyboard are you using?

It's an old Yamaha one that we've had since I've been a kid. It's must be at least 10 years old, but it works just fine for the bit of screwing around I'm doing.

That's cool. Someone gave me an older 66key with midi but I still want to buy a proper midi controller. I want to look cool twisting knobs.... er...

@ tait  you said Knobs (sorry couldnt help myself)

Im not sure what help I can be really, I use a variety of things including Reason, Logic Pro 8 and various Audio Units (AU). I've used Ableton but only briefly as a demo.

At the moment Im not using any kind of midi instrument's I just use my Keyboard (the one Im typing on) to jot out stuff in Logic, but this system dosn't seem to work in Reason as its not recognized at an input device. You could try Logic Express if you are on a budget or even this gourp of products that are free.

I've compressed a boatload of free stuff that can be downloaded from the net or it comes on the magazines called Computer Music. Its basically a bunch of software that will have you making music in no time, I'm not sure if any of it will be of any kind of use but feel free to try it here is a total list of stuff.

Download link >> DOWNLOAD << 37.3mb for all of the below.

CMusic 1.5 (DAW Main interface)
CM-101
SR202
DS404
OHMYGOD
CM-505
CM-303
DSP-Quattro
PSPCM Spring Verb
CMFuzz
Energy Pro
PulseModulator
Alpha CM (This is an awesome synth)
Zebra CM (This is an even better synth)
energy XT2 Core

All of the above are OSX versions (if there are some OS9 one's i do apologize), I've run most of them and they all work fine, some are VST only and some are AU only but most have variations of both.

Also you can try THIS its a free rompler that is so awesome its hard to describe, the sound is just wicked do a google for Yellow Tools Independence Free v2.00 and its easy to get going but you will need a DAW like Logic, Pro Tools or Cubase to run it in and the download is very hefty all the sample patches come to close on over a Gigabyte[EDIT] Its actual 1.64GB.

Audacity is another great tool but its more of a sample editor rather than a music maker.

Reason is again a fantastic tool, granted the sound quality Isn't as good as say Logic, Cubase or Pro Tools but its not going to be as these are Movie and Pro music apps, but the synths and editing is easy and fun to do live performances with it.

If i remember anything else I will pop it in here for easy refrence but let us know how you get on and if you have any questions then dont hesitate to give us a shout. 👍
