Audio setup help!!

I recently bought a monitor to hook up to the ps3. The monitor is an Acer 23", it is connected via HDMI. However, the monitor does not have speakers nor a 3.5mm headphone jack.

I know I will have to output the audio from the red and white cables, but I am unsure how to do so. I would like to use just a normal set of headphones with a 3.5mm jack. Can anybody guide me on how to do so, or any (relatively cheap) speaker setups that would work?

Sorry I'm a newbie, but any help would be appreciated.

Nope, you just use an adapter.

I assume you could use the headphones but you wouldnt have control over the volume and becuase of this it would be extremely faint. So you would need some sort of amp.

I connected mine to a cable with a 3.5mm jack and plugged it into my computer soundcard input/linein/mic jack. If thats an option for you its as cheap as the cable.

I got the adapter nick09 posted. Will just wait for shipping now to see if it works.

If not i'll plug it into a set of speakers and then plug in my headphones.

I have the same problem as the O.P. in that if I want to connect my PS3 to the computer monitor but I can't hook up the sound. Can some one clarify if the adapter in the second post works and if so, how good is the quality?

Ya if you simply run your headphones straight off the RCA's, you will be disappointed, just because they are meant to carry the signal which needs to be amplified. So your best option if you don't already have a little bookshelf stereo with AUX input, is to buy one for cheap... and voila you've got sound that can be heard (gotta change Audio Out under settings to component out in XMB)

The PS3 has a Multi A/V slot on the back - you can use the RCA/Multi cable that comes with the PS3.

Connect a RCA coupler

I actually did this earlier in the week. I use it for a speaker system I have but I can also listen through ipod headphones as well. Sounds decent, loud enough. I can hear all game sounds as well as chat through the headphones. Only spent about $6 total for the RCA coupler and Y adapter.

You can also find the items I listed at Radio Shack or a similar store.

I'm using the same method for more than half a year now and the sound through my headphones is excellent. Of course no volume control, but for most games it's just right for me. Only in GT5 and Shift 2 , the non-race cars sound way too silent. But the volume on e.g. Warhawk is exactly right. Of course if you're used to play your games on maxed out volume you will be dissapointed.

Do you use a microphone as well? What I was trying to ask was... is there a product or setting that provides both the game sound and chat functions through the headphones (with a mic attached)?

I guess if you are using headphones for sound then the mic/chat is difficult to use.

I have a bluetooth head set for chat and I have a pair of headphones. Wearing both at the same time could be a little uncomfortable over a prelonged period.

Am I able to use my headphones+mic headset for audio and chat?

No, I'm not using a microphone.
The reason I use headphones is to not disturb anyone else in the house. Yelling into a mic would make my use of headphones a bit superfluous :sly:

just clip the bluetooth to the collar of your shirt.

You can hear the chat through the headphones.

Thanks for your suggestions but I have found a fix! 💡 It was a bit too obvious really but hey-ho. :sick:

I dug out the AV lead that came with the PS3 and found an audio lead like this one and plugged it into my computer speakers.

The speakers have volume control and so it works like a charm and cost me nothing. I guess I can also connect directly to my PC too but I don't need to do that.
