Auriol closes in on Skoda deal
New Zealand · Skoda · Didier Auriol · 09/10/2002 10:19:40

Former World Rally Champion Didier Auriol says he's getting 'closer and closer' to signing a deal with Skoda for 2003.

The Frenchman says he's looking at a full 14-round programme with the Czech team and hopes to know more in two weeks' time.

"The situation is we are talking; we're getting closer and closer," said the 1994 world champ. "But for the time being we've not signed anything yet. I think in 15 days time I'll know a lot more.

"I think it would be a very nice challenge and Skoda seem enthusiastic and very nice people," he added. "It's important for me to work with a team I like and I think we would get on well."

Auriol has been sidelined for most of this year after being dropped by Peugeot at the end of 2001, but has a wealth of experience he can bring to Skoda. He has 20 WRC victories to his name, the last of which was as recent as Catalunya 2001.

Another former world champion could come back and join the fields. But can he score points with that concrete block they call a Skoda?

No.

And the reason for this is that Auriol was never any good unless the car was absolutely perfect for him.

well Gardemeister, Thiry and Eriksson were able to score some points (5 in total...) but they're still the slowest car in the field.

it will probably take some time, i'd say he will not score more than 4 points. Unless, of course, Skoda has a magic evolution, or a smaller car for next year.

Skoda's are **** cars but do suprisingly well in the WRC thats why I like them.

Why did toyota stop competing in the WRC?

Why did toyota stop competing in the WRC?

Because they wanted to do Le Mans and then F1, and they wanted Toyota Team Europe, who were running the rally cars, to do it.
