Austrian Village name change?

I don't know how many people are familiar with this quaint village. Apparently tourists have been stealing signs and making a mockery of it. You can read the article below.

They should just print some signs and sell them cheap to tourists.

Heck if I was one I would buy one.
 
I would have stolen one. That would take pride of place in my living room.

The think is, why would they knowingly name their town that being that Australia is an English speaking country.

That's like having a village called 'Smeg Leg' or something.

I took a 2 second glimpse at the sign and giggled. I didn't bother reading the article as it had already been explained in the OP and I sure as hell didn't study the link before I clicked on it.

Like I said, early morning, long commute.
 
You should have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.
 
Australia is not that cool to have the name :sensored* as a town name.

Would that town name be against the AUP if you used it to talk about said town?
 
I removed an image of the sign posted in a thread last week so yes, it would.

Heh, I knew exactly what this would be about as soon as I read the thread title.
You can understand their annoyance, I suppose. It doesn't mean anything "amusing" to them. Changing the CK to a G/GG sounds like the easiest solution really, no idea why they haven't done it in the past. Wonder how many signs they've been through over the years :P

Do people still steal the Ham Sandwich sign in Kent? :lol:

I actually remember reading somewhere that the guy who made the Bic pens wanted to name the company after himself but he was afraid that Americans would mispronounce it. His name was Marcel Bich.
 
Then there's the interestingly named towns in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about which it can be stated: You can go from Blue Ball to Paradise through Intercourse.

Still and all, though, I'd wager that the town of [AUP violation], Austria, gains more through tourist revenue than they lose to sign replacement costs.
 
I bet they don't take it as well as these guys in the Czech Republic...

Well, can certainly understand that - a village near my hometown is named Wank. Means nothing in German but...well...the tourists like their signs too much, too.
