I thought insignia was supposed to be possible follower of the Omega/Carlton. :odd:
 
So is this made to compete with the Impreza STi, Evo etc?

My guess would be closer to the A4 Quattro. If it was going to go up against a rally-type car, I would say probably the WRX. It would be even cooler if it had a V-8 like the Holdens.

Its a single turbo, but yes, co-developed by Saab and Opel. It will probably get the high-output version from the Saab 9-3 TurboX (the 900 Turbo lives!), but as to what power level specifically, its hard to say. My guess is that 280-300 BHP is the rough estimate.
 
so everyone is making twin turbo 2.8 to 3.2 V6/inline 6 engines these days.

Maybe with a little over 300 and a little less weight, this could stand a chance at running with the STi or evo?

Volvo uncovers S80 super saloon

This week comes news from Gothenburg that a new performance saloon from Volvo, as mooted by Autocar back in February 2007, could be in the product plan for sometime in the next two years.

At a low-key preview held in advance of the Frankfurt motor show last week, the Swedish car maker gave the motoring press its first look at a concept car bound not for the halls of the Frankfurt Messe, but for the SEMA tuning show due to be held in Las Vegas, USA, in October.

That glittering concept car is called the S80 High Performance Concept, pictured in our gallery for the first time. And, as Autocar can exclusively reveal, if the reception is positive enough, Volvo could be persuaded to put the cut-price, environmentally friendly, all-wheel-drive rival for the Audi S6 into production.

Briefed in Sweden, built in Germany

Although it’s a Volvo, the S80 HPC is the actually the work of German Volvo dealer and motor sport specialist Heico Sportiv, which conceived, designed and engineered it completely off its own back.

"We wanted to explore how far we could take a special high-performance version of the S80, and Heico’s impressive track record in motor sports and Volvo tuning made them the perfect partner for the job," explained Volvo product boss Lex Kerssemakers.

It’s not the first time Volvo has gone to an outside entity for help in producing a performance show car, either; last year Volvo tuner IPD made a nutty 400bhp C30 concept for the SEMA show.

An S80 with more than 350bhp, that runs on biofuel…

Although it looks as if they forgot to paint it, the S80 HPC actually wears seven layers of metal-effect paint that took two weeks to apply.

And while you might expect a highly-strung version of Volvo’s Yamaha-built 4.4-litre V8 engine, under the bonnet of the S80 HPC there’s actually a more fiercely blown version of the 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbocharged petrol mill.

The turbo motor was favoured by Heico for its compatibility with E85 fuel; a turbocharged six responds better to the higher octane rating of bioethanol than a normally aspirated V8 and, although currently rated at 350bhp, Heico Sportiv is confident that the T6’s output can be increased to close to 400bhp once its development is complete.

Just as it does in the current S80 V8 model, power finds its way roadwards via all four wheels, with the 0-62mph dash taking just 5.8 seconds. And in order to complete its transformation to a proper performance saloon, Heico has lowered the car’s ride height by 40mm, upgraded its braking system, and fitted special 20in forged alloys with 255-profile Continental tyres.

Once you’ve stopped staring at the paint job, you’ll notice some sports styling changes that look impressive enough to make production.

The S80 HPC’s body kit consists of redesigned front and rear bumpers, wide side skirts, spoilers front and rear, three larger air ducts in the front bumper, integrated LED daytime running lights (thanks to Ingolstadt for that idea) and a new sports grille.

Inside, the car is upholstered in blue leather throughout, with matching blue stitching. In the rear, the normal S80’s three-seat bench has been replaced with two bucket-style seats and an extended centre console which mirrors the car’s floating console up front.

There’s a sports steering wheel for the keener driver to get to grips with, and a leather-trimmed gear lever.

But will they build it?

The future of the S80 HPC will depend on how keenly it’s received in Las Vegas next month. The brand would benefit greatly from tapping into the US market for hot saloons, but it can ill afford to repeat the critical and sales flops its last hot models proved.

The move has got precedent. Back in 2005, Volvo previewed the S60 R with the Volvo Performance Concept. It’ll be keen not to revisit the failure that car represented; the S60 R’s lack of success contributed significantly to the firm’s decision to discontinue production of its R-line of models recently.

However, Volvo spokesperson Per-Ake Froberg told Autocar that “if there’s clear customer demand, we are open to reconsider that decision.”

Fans of fast Volvos shouldn’t give up hope, then; provided the Yanks like it, a near-400bhp, all-wheel-drive new S80 could come to a showroom near you soon.
 
BUILD IT!!!

It wouldn't be able to compete with the likes of the M5 or E63 AMG, but I think this could try to take on things like the top version of the new G8, or the Charger SRT-8. While this isn't as much a Ford as the G8 or Charger will be GM, at least they will have some kind of entry into this market. It might stand a change against an E550, S6 or 550i.

I guess it would be in an odd position because it would lack the muscle car personality of the American cars, and the refined style and build of the Germans.
 
400bhp and Volvo in the same statement have a certain sexy--almost pornographic sound to it. I like it.

Seems like the Volvo S80 should be shooting to compete with the likes of other true super saloon makers. 400hp doesn't seem like quite as much as it once did and now Volvo is trying to step up their game where most competitors seem to be running for 500 and 500+ (depending on what you would call competition).

Don't get me wrong, the car looks great, probably drives rather well, but I don't expect it to be much of a contender.
On a personal level I don't even find the "400hp and Volvo" thing to be all that appealling.

Then again, if I saw a S40 with similar specs I'd be way more excited. :trouble:
 
Cars like this deserve to see the revival of the R badge that was recently nixed.
 
So it is going to be the car that people who drive Camry's find boring, but now with 400BHP? Yawn. I'd rather have those bits in a Ford Fusion.

Court throws out bid to sue carmakers for global warming

A judge has dismissed a lawsuit from the state of California demanding compensation from six carmakers for their contribution to global warming.

Filed last September by the state's attorney general, it was the first lawsuit attempting to hold manufacturers responsible for the greenhouse gases produced by their vehicles. It sought millions of dollars in compensation from General Motors, Ford, Toyota, DaimlerChrysler and the US divisions of Nissan and Honda.

It said: "Global warming has already injured California, its environment, its economy, and health and wellbeing of its citizens."

But in a written ruling issued yesterday, Judge Martin Jenkins said that before the court could act it needed politicians to establish what was an acceptable level of carbon dioxide emissions. "The court finds that injecting itself into the global-warming thicket at this juncture would require an initial policy determination of the type reserved for the political branches of government," he wrote.

The state is now considering whether to appeal.
 
This might actually make it a reasonable car to drive. Coming from a Volvo product, it probably won't be too awe inspiring, but you certainly won't have to worry about falling asleep on your way to pick up the kids.

I wonder if this will still have a "safe" emphasis that seems to make Volvos slower and more dangerous to drive. I think that would pretty much kill anything this car could have going for it.

EDIT: I don't know what to think about the court decision. The tree-hugging (and anti-amercan car) side of me wants the car companies to be sued for every penny they are worth, but once common sense takes over, I have to consider what really is contributing to the pollution. I'm sure there are many companies in the state of California that contribute more that are suable. But they wouldn't want to hurt their economy, would they?
 
We should sue California's politicians for contributing to global warming, what with all the hot air they produce.

Soft-top Polo loads up on style

For sun-loving VW fans, the most exciting Volkswagen at the Frankfurt Motor Show was nowhere to be seen on the firm’s own stand.

This sharp Polo Cabrio is the work of coachbuilder Karmann, which was famous for its classic 1955 Karmann Ghia. The four-seater drop-top has been developed to showcase the firm’s latest folding-roof technology.

Along with its Polo GTI-inspired styling, the canvas top also has two sliding glass sections front and rear to let fresh air into the cabin. They are operated independently from the roof, while the rear window also allows easier access to the boot than regular supermini cabrios can normally offer. Equally impressive are the folding back seats, which extend the luggage area without the need for any intrusive body-strengthening structures.

This is made possible with the introduction of COPS – Cabrio Over*head Protection System – which uses fixed rollover bars behind the rear seats to both improve crash safety and increase body stiffness. Karmann’s system is also lighter than conventional roll bars. But the designers haven’t stopped there. In order to get the VW’s proportions right, the Polo’s tail has been lengthened by 130mm and the track widened by 40mm.

The trademark GTI black honeycomb grille features at the front, while there are black alloy wheels with a striking red rim all-round.

Mechanical changes are less substantial, but to give the Polo a more aggressive look, engineers have fitted a new exhaust system with twin pipes mounted in the centre of the bumper. The Polo Cabrio has been produced to show the engineering expertise of Karmann. And although there are currently no firm plans to put it into production, the company has identified there is still a strong demand for convertibles with fabric hoods, despite the rise of folding hard-top models. And with cloth-roofed versions of the Audi A3 and BMW’s 1-Series on the way, the ragtop Polo could have a bright future.
 
Those rear seats look great - as long as you have no legs and enjoy having the forward headrest 6 inches in front of your face :rolleyes:

Yes, but the Eos is based on the Golf, while this is a Polo. It's smaller and as a production vehicle would end up in a lower price bracket, thus it wouldn't compete against the Eos.

Besides, this is Karmann's concept-car, not Volkswagen's coming-soon-to-a-dealer-near-you production-car (unless there is enough demand for it, in which case it could be put to production).
 
Apart from the required "4 seats my ass!" it's actuallya damn good looking car with a nice little twist to the boot opening solution.
 
Not so sure about the red roof but I think this thing is great! It looks cool and the folding top only adds to the effect.

Please, can it have the same 2.0T and DSG that is in the Golf GTI?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the Eos shared more with the Passat than the Golf? I mean, they're both pretty much based on the same chassis (no more sharing between the Passat and A4), but whatever.

I like the idea, particularly in the vein of the old VW Cabriolet (my Grandmother has one of the last 2002 models, the last ever). But, size is an issue. Give us the "real" Polo here in the US before you give us the drop-top and I'll be happy...

According to Wiki, the Eos is based on the A5 platform, which also underpins the MKV Rabbit/GTI and the Jettas.

The Eos is also the successor to the Cabrio, just a little more on that car.

I bet VW could sell the Polo if they brought it over here. It could probably compete well with the Fit and co. And you never know, It could pave the way for more small cars. We could use some of the more compact stuff around.

Zafira gets Flextreme makeover

Vauxhall is flexing its creative muscles with the next Zafira – and here’s the proof! Sister company Opel un*veiled this stunning concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show. And, according to the maker, it gives strong hints as to how the next generation of the big-selling MPV will look.

Called the Flextreme, the show vehicle has a clever electric powerplant and innovative barn-style doors which open out 90 degrees.

However, unlike rival systems in the Mazda RX-8 and MINI Club*man, the rear ‘FlexDoors’ can be operated independently from those at the front. As the practical set-up received an excellent response in cus*tomer clinics, the design has been patented, so it’s likely to be used on future production models.

Another clever feature is a hi-tech variation on the FlexFix carrying tray, which extends from the tailgate of the latest Corsa and Antara models. Rather than holding a set of bicycles, however, on the Flextreme the system incorporates a pair of specially de*signed Segway two-wheel electric personal mobility vehicles, which can be stowed in the boot.

But the concept car’s major innovation is its electric powerplant. The advanced unit uses a 1.3-litre CDTI engine that isn’t even connected to the wheels. Instead, it drives an electric generator and runs at constant revs to keep the on-board batteries topped up in the most efficient way possible. Once fully charged, the high-capacity lithium-ion cells provide a maximum range of 34 miles.

Although that doesn’t sound like very much, Vauxhall claims 75 per cent of commutes fall within this range. What’s more, the technology is such that the batteries can be charged from the mains in only three hours. When the car is run on plug-in power alone, its net CO2 emissions work out at a mere 40g/km.

This powertrain technology is a development of the system fitted to the Chevrolet Volt show car, which made its debut at the Detroit expo in January. A fourth Volt-based concept will arrive early next year, and parent company GM says that it is committed to building a production vehicle which features the innovative petrol/electric set-up in 2010.

In the meantime, Vauxhall is preparing to unveil its all-new Vectra replacement at the British Motor Show next summer. A source within the firm revealed to Auto Express that, after months of debate, the decision has finally been made to call it the Insignia. This will be officially announced in the next few months.
 
It looks pretty cool. And those doors are HUGE. What is it? An MPV over here generally means minivan, but it's design makes it look like a slightly overgrown hatchback.

I really like the gasoline-electric power plant. A kid that I worked with over the summer had an idea for a diesel-electric F-150 that I thought was pretty cool. Trains use the same kind of system, so I would imagine that it is pretty powerful. Any information on the output at the wheels?

I think my opinion of the Volt has just gone from "meh" to "pretty sweet."
 
Even if it only looks vaugley like that by production, I'll be thrilled if it became a Saturn. 👍
