AUTO VS. MAN--Purchasing Cars

Had you noted my location you would have realised that I come from the UK... Therefore I drive "Stick" as standard... In fact I've never actually driven an Automatic car.

If I had a steering wheel with a set of peddles that included a clutch then I would say the driving MT would be the way to go and that this could be implemented fully and correctly... in reality driving without a clutch and merely telling the car what gear it should be in is not driving MT.

I totally agree with phantasm. I always used to use the auto tranny. I thought that it was soo much easier, that I would never use the stick, that it was pointless. I believed that I would get worse lap times with the manual. Then, one day, I went to GTPlanet. My whole perspective changed. I went into a thread called "My manual situation..." or something like that, and found someone who was just like me. They thought the same thing I did. But they changed. I started to use the manual, and then soon found that I was golding the liscences, gaining much faster lap times, getting into the correct gear in corners, and overall the car was in much more control. Then I used the auto for one race, just for experimental purposes. I could NOT go back. I found myself kicking the floor and slamming the controller down because the friggin ai was in the wrong gear. I could not win, it was pointless. I quit halfway through the race. Let this be a lesson to all those newbies out there...even if you suck at first, use the stick. Be persistent, and you will eventually succeed.

i wasn't saying or alluding that you personally haven't driven standard... i was commenting in general that people who have driven stick in real life would be able to quickly learn MT in GT b/c they have that real world experience of driving a manual car and understand the principles... you make a solid point about the clutch, but sometimes we have to deal with the limitations of the game world... i think PD has done a great job incorporating as much "reality" as they can into a game, and the new logitech wheel looks very "toight" (as in the words of Goldmember), sure a clutch would seal the deal... but i still really dig what we got, and it's only surely to get better.

If a 12 year old kid can't learn MT, who cares... Sony themselves say their target market is 19-30 year old gamers... which is why PS has such kicka$$ games. Don't like it, get GameCube.

GT-Unit... respect... that was my point, i had a similar experience switching to MT, once you learn and get the feel for it, your results become that much better in GT. Especially the licenses... some golds i couldn't get even close to with AT, i beat the first or second time through in MT, and the Time Trials... piece of cake (except that damn string!!!!) argh!!! still need to shave 4 secs off my best to get gold.

My main problem is that I can't get used to MT cos I can't feel the cluctch and the gears through it and therefore I seem to lose track of where the revs are...

I suspect though that it is mainly through lack of practice/time/effort to learn it... I may just start MT and see if I can stick with it when I get GT4...

My other main problem is that I tend to play a lot when having beers with mates... and MT can serioulsly confuse a beer addled brain!

C.

^ the easiest way to get over that i find is to get used to the engine sound... then you don't have to look at the revs to know when to shift.

beers with the mates... ya i can see that causing some trouble... been down that road a few times :trouble:

I use the auto in GT, always have. I just can't get used to driving with the manual shift mode in the game. Which is weird, because every car I've ever owned, except my old ass Cherokee, has been a manual. In real life, I know for a fact that I can't live without driving a manual. I get so used to driving and shifting, that when I drive my girlfriends Denali, I find myself pushing on the floorboard with my left foot thinking there is a clutch there.

With my car, I'm sure that I would be faster around a track with a manual over an auto. But most of that comes from me just being so used to the car, and what its lke on a track. I auto-x a lot with my Talon, and I can't even imagine what that would be like with an auto. I know my car so well by feel and sound, that I very rarely need to look at the instruments. But, in GT, going from car to car to car makes it hard to get used to them to a point where I feel I could be faster with the manual. But, thats just me. All of my friends are manual users in GT, just a preference I guess. I'm just as fast as them, so who cares I guess. As long as I'm winning, I could care less what trans is in the car.

the whole point of this thread though is that the game shouldnt have equal physics for both trannys. like u said, auto-x is much better and faster with a manual. yet on GT, the characteristics are the same. no delayed response with autos or anything. no slipping, etc...its just a cool addition they could add to be more realistic.

^ absolutely... the real differences would be seen in the lack of higher gears, thus lower top end, and less flexibility in tuning gear ratios, and the additional weight of the car with the AT in.

Well, actually, the point of this thread was to make your car purchase of auto or manual STICK with your car.

But yeah, auto and manual should most defianately have different effects on the car.

Well as has been said the Auto boxes in GT are actually just Manual boxes but operated by the computer for the player along with the clutch for manuals too, so the penalty is really just less control over gear. Still even with an Auto you can hold R2? and the computer won't change gear, allowing you to rev higher/not change down in power heavy cars with bad wheelspin. But of course you can't downshift to aid in slowing down.

Personally I nearly always use auto in games, just because changing gear with a pad is a bit crap in my opinion & also simply because in games I'm used to autos. However I did use manual to get some golds in GT : P & it did seem faster. But in racing, it just seems to be a pain, but that might be just because I'm not used to manuals in game.

(Only ever driven manual cars in real life by the way)

t5 once you get used to it you'll love it... i was the same way then changed to MT and will never look back. The only cars that it gets crazy on are the F1 cars as the shifts happen so quick and the rally cars, because of the drifting and sliding you need to work the gears a lot. but even still when you get the feel, you can really crush your best AT times.

Yeah I might force myself to use manual when GT4 eventually comes out, although for the first month I'll probably drive badly  still thats part of the fun & would remind me of the first time I played GT1 :D

Time to start getting used to it.
more and more cars are coming on the market with clutchless manuals, with either a nudge shifter/button or paddle operation usually having the option of auto mode for when you cant be arsed.
While up shifting is not as fast as if you were really crashing through the box, they are much better than old style fully auto boxes.
Even my new Transit has steering wheel mounted shift buttons, and a 3 mode gearbox.

u just quoted me yet said exactly what ive said.

this sounds like a great idea, only wish PD checked these forums, for stuff like this rather than GT4 dreams....

Phantasm, this reminds me of Rage Racer from 1996. When I played the game, you could race with cars in the first two or three Grands Prix, then you step up to the fourth race series. When you get to level 4, you can only have Manual/Standard cars. It was probably easy because the fourth GP had an oval race. Past the third GP, the cars were Manual, but I've stuck with my Gnade and my VW-looking Age Solo (not real car companies, and DEFINITELY not going to be in GT4) and just tuned them up as they were the two most decent cars to race with.

Would I want this in GT4? Believe it or not, I don't race with Manual on my PS2. In the arcades, I'm hit-and-miss. I think an advantage to Manual cars is that the cost is usually lower. But I think GT3 had the best setup. If you raced Automatic a lot, you'd want to set your preferences to Automatic. So, I'd have to say... no for having auto and manual cars. It's realistic, but I wouldn't go for it.

You said they shouldn't have equal physics for both auto & manual transmissions, I said its technically not an automatic gearbox just a PS2 controlled manual box i.e. They are both manual transmissions just one is operated by the driver one by the cpu (But still a manual box).

Perhaps I misunderstood you, perhaps you misunderstood me.

i couldve sworn it was said earlier though. possibly by me. too lazy to look. anyway, saying that they shouldnt have equal physics was my way of saying the transmissions are now the same with no slip or anything. doesnt matter though. its all good.
