I've been trying to get the hang on using manual gears, but I race online with a great bunch of friends & I'm just not competitive with manual shifting yet so I'm still using automatic when online.

The thing is I just can't seem to get as good a start off the grid as the others who use automatic. I'm sure it's got to do with how much throttle I'm using at the countdown (I usually floor it lol). Is there an ideal amount of revs to use during the countdown? I've tried using less throttle but I always lose ground. Any help would be really appreciated. cheers
 
First gear is always tough on a high powered car, you can just floor it at the start but it'll result in alot of wheelspin (especially on race hards).
If you have a wheel it's fairly easy to maintain a certain amount of revs and get a good start off the line. You'll have to be more sensitive with DS3.
I always try to stay 1 or 2000 rpm below the limiter.
 
Cheers mate, I have a wheel so that should help, I guess I'll have to practice, I just could never find that sweetspot with the revs before. I've a race tonight so we'll see how it goes, hopefully it won't go pairshapped.

I don't think you can do that with automatic gears??? I've made first as long as possible & am trying to keep the revs 1000 - 2000 below the redline, but at what point do I floor it? Just call me leadfoot :sly:
 
Don't floor it straight away, I usually hit full throttle before shifting , it depends on how powerful your car is.
 
It's good to know at what speed you should shift. Especially in drag racing. Go out and see how fast 1st gear will take you. Example, if first gear can go to 40mph, you should shift to second at around 35mph as to not hit the limiter.

Once you get used to it you won't even think about it :)
 
I don't use manual - it's far too complicated for me to constantly keep track of the gears. That said, I once won a race on GT Concept with the Viper GTS-R Concept using only 4th gear once :lol:
 
The only car I use automatic is X1. Shifting 10 times in 10 seconds is a bit too much :P

Cheers but not really much help for me using Automatic gears when racing online. I'll switch to Manual when I get better but I just wanted to know how to get the best start off the grid when using automatic gears. I've been practicing today online trying to hold the revs about 1000ish below the redline & seemed to be a bit better with less wheelspin.
 
A real-life drag racing tip is to hold the revs right at peak torque when you launch. Maximum accel with minimum wheelspin.
 
For race cars i usually start between 5500 and 6000. But i use a small amount of tcs so that sorts it out. However, i still do the same thing with no tcs and works good. Just gotta get the right amount of wheelspin. What i do is if the countdown timer start and i wont finish my lap in time, pull off the racing line and do practice starts. Really helps me gain an advantgae
