Anyone here actually use manual gears? are they easy to get used to? are they really faster given you can optimise a gear change but you can miss gear changes every now and then too? or are we all still (me included) using automatic gears

You can definitely drive faster with manual gears and control the car better.

But I'm too lazy so I just stick to automatic most of the time.

When I first started with GT on GT4 I used auto for a short time, but even on a DS3, I went to manual fairly early.

Couldn't stand the game's gear selections.

But then again, I drive manuals IRL.

Manual all the way for me. It is a little hard to get used to if you are used to manual (I used auto for a few months on the original GT) but once you get used to it you'll get more consistent and faster laps.

With an auto sometimes it'll shift down in corners when you don't want it to, or shift up right before a corner, when it would be faster to keep it in the gear it was in. With a manual you can control what gear you want for what corner, and when you want to change gear.

Do you use a wheel or Dualshock? With a Logitech G27 and 6 speed shifter + clutch you may miss some gears everyone in a while, but with paddle shifters or a controller I don't think you'll have any problems at all.

In real life I hate manual gears. Unless you are on a track I cannot see the point.

In all racing games I always choose the manual transmission option.

It's hard on some cars though. Most cars you know when to change because of the sound of the engine. But some cars hit the limiter when they don't sound like they should. The bus in the Top Gear challenge is one such example.

Use manual as much as you can. You'll really feel more engaged with the driving and ultimately it's more rewarding.

I used manual in GT5 and auto in Real life.

Manual in game because I feel I can control the car better that way on breaking, can help me kill a too big trottle input by shifting up a bit early on 2nd gear.

In RL auto is so much cooler, because you can just chill out and be focus on the different danger you could have on the road. I like manual when I was young, not so much now lol.

Manual gives you more control over the rev range. I've found that automatic gears change up too early and change down too late. It can get really frustrating.

There's also something that's just... better, with using manual gears. It feels more natural and somewhat reassuring, to be changing the gears yourself as opposed to a computer.

I just ordered a Fanatec Wheel because it was the best deal for a setup with three foot pedals (clutch), and I drive manuals in real life too. Its just more fun!

Manual is the way to go. More control over your car.

A huge benefit is you can change your gears at whatever rpm u want to.
If you look at your cars stats, it will give you peak torque @ rpm
This is where one should change gears for optimal performance. (beyond that rpm your engines power is reduced)

Auto will just always change gears at the tip of the red line.

Manual transmissions can dramatically decrease your stopping distance and times with faster downshifts, and reduce wheelspin in inclement weather with early upshifts.

Manuals are good for many reasons outside of racing.

-better mpg
-better control over the car in general
*less corrective braking needed
*more control in snow/ice
-manuals last longer than automatica, clutches are cheap trannies are not
-more fun/interesting and more involved to drive, making you pay attention to the road more and in turn making you into a better driver, unlike the typical lazy non-skilled auto driver
-real men drive a stick

Been using manual since GT2, when I was in middle school. I hate playing racing games with an automatic transmission. But, I also drive manual IRL and absolutely hate automatics with a passion.

manual gear always except the vettel chalenge.

This.

I use manual but it's not like Auto is bad either. It really is ALL preference, both in game and irl. Like some have mentioned, manual allows for better times but not everyone wants the fastest time, just being able to win a race is enough so Auto allows them to concentrate on corners (refer to above quote). Or irl, yeah I can drive manual but I love having an auto car in bumper-to-bumper daily traffic (which is why I have a weekend warrior, and a daily driver).

Try having an Auto-only, kei-car race with high boost on.. good fun haha.

Fuel mileage.

And yes manual all the way!

I know but the ease of driving an auto (in my personal situation) out weighs any cost benefits so as I said before I cannot see the point :)

I've driven many hundreds of thousand of miles in manual vehicles, been there done that. All I want now is to smoothly get home from work.

Maybe I'd like a manual for a bit of fun, but for everyday use it's a drag. Have you tried eating a piece of fried chicken when you have to keep changing gears?

In F1 2010 I used a manual because the lap times are better it seems. On the really technical F1 tracks it's a reference point, sometimes the only way to know if your at the right speed for the given corner is to be in the right gear.

In Gran Turismo I've used auto gears, not tried manual yet. I know in the Vettel challenge it would be almost impossible to use manual, just too fast and your at a diff speed each time you hit the same corner. With that car sometimes you can flat foot corners, the next lap your having to brake.

Now if I got into a series of the same cars that ran the same tracks, than I might consider a manual for the reference point braking and corning, and to try and shave tenths or hundreths off my lap times.

I stick with auto most of the time, but I used manual on one of the old seasonal race (the one with the FC rx-7) so I can short-shift in corners to avoid wheelspins :)
