Can we please have a automerge post incorporated into GTP as I find it alot easier to post.

For example, say I quote someone in a thread, and then as I carry on going through the topic I want to quote someone again, it would save me time having to copy and paste etc and editing it in, by just pressing the quote button and the system automerging any double posts.

:)

heh heh....you may well get your wish there Poverty. ;)

Fantastic idea. It will also stop n00bs from double and triple posting. 👍

But, I assume this works by automatically merging two posts together if they are made by the same user? The 'Double Post' as it's known.

Something to remember though is the fact that sometimes double posts are necessary - if they're made a month apart. If a member has a thread they update periodically, they'll want to 'bump' their thread with the latest details they add. Also, a new post alerts others there has been new material added to the thread.

Editing a post does neither of these two things.

So, perhaps the auto merge could have a set time limit on it. If the two posts are a day (or more) apart, they remain as separate posts?

Just something to consider.

Thats true but surely posts made over a certain ammount of time between each other wouldn't merge, either that or maybe the thread would update so the last post made thats merged becomes the last post in the thread, ie you make a post at 10pm, the thread updates on the main forum screen, last unread post 10pm, you then post again at 10:10, the two posts merge and thread updates again as last post made at 10:10, that would bring the thread back to the top of the list as 10:10 and show it as having an unread post on the boards.

👍 Good idea.

...Or maybe it could be an option, like after you make the second post, you can press the automerge button, and the posts would be put together.
Just my 2 cents.

Basically deleting the first post and making a new one to replace it? I'm not sure they can make that possible. I'd say that all double posts within 24hours of each other should be merged automatically, if it is possible to do.

Good idea!

Edit: Minicooper, that wouldn't eliminate double posting too like it would automatically. Several newbies have been double posting lately to add something they thought of just as they pressed submit.

"Oh and also...."

I would make the time that it wouldn't automerge be 12 hours. Sometimes, I wake up in the morning, tell some people thanks for commenting in my gallery, then at the end of the day, around 12 hours later, I bump the thread back up, and go to sleep. 24 hours is a bit too much, even if you post the next day a couple hours before the day before, it would still merge.

Unfortunately, I don't think that will work.

If they're ignorant enough to double post in the first place, I think the odds of them hitting the 'Automerge' button are pretty slim...

Are there automerge options in the system? If not, then this is all a bit irrelevant...
It might not be available now, but that's not to say it won't be available in the future.

Ive been on another forum, where they have it and it works a charm. I have'nt noticed if the post gets bumped back to the top if you post again but I think it does. I might go check now if it works.

Ok Ive just checked it out and if you post again in about 10 mins time, they will automatically automerge, but any longer than that and it would just be a seperate post.

(so this post would have been merged with the above)

I was, at first, indifferent about this feature. After all, it is easy enough for someone to simply click the edit button and update their own post.

After thinking on it for a while, I'm in favor of this feature. It would help clean up many double posts and make the site read easier for all.

Excellent suggestion Poverty.

PERFECT BALANCE

Yeah, I would say around 12 hours or less would be fine, but more than 10 minutes. I guess we will see what happens when automerging becomes available.

I'm not really very interested in an automerge feature, as I'm not fully aware of its availability or its usefulness. Double-posting just isn't severe enough of an issue here to warrant such a feature.

Now, as I took Poverty's original suggestion, a multi-quote feature is on the way very soon which will allow you to quote multiple posts using checkboxes to keep you from having to copy and paste while inserting the quote vB code.

Ohh Lord!! I was waiting for that! That'll be a lot more practical indeed.

Nice one Jordan 👍

Ciao!

Care to revisit the idea of the auto merge feature in vB? Some nice features I have seen implemented is the auto delete of duplicate posts and the auto merge of multiple posts of the same user that are back to back will automatically merge into the first post.

Not sure what kind of load it would put on the server, but it seems like a pretty slick feature that seems to work nicely.

Well as mentioned in another post, either have the thread update when the posts are merged, or ignore double posts that happen after a certain length of time.

Well, I'm still not very enthusiastic about such functionality. It has the potential to cause as many problems as it solves, and I think I would be quite confused if I encountered it. Was there some recent event or thread that made you think of this, Pako?

The question is, do we really have that much double-posting? We have "flood prevention" already.

Yeah, no real specific "problem". I usually will see new users post one response after another instead of hitting edit, they just add another post. It was a handy feature I noticed at another forum. I found it very useful in conjunction with the quick reply box just get in there and type away. Certainly hitting "Edit" does the exact same thing other than having to actually hit edit. I'm sure it's over bloated code, I was just curious about it more than anything.

Some members may get a little lazy when they want to add something they missed out and just do another quick reply, which will automerge, I suppose it's not a issue but may develeop bad habits.

Just a thought.
