I've been answering a lot of questions at a site. i don't think I can plug it, here. the place is in severe need of car gurus, as my common sense answers aren't going over too well

examples:

Q:(vehicle) need wiring diagram/vacuum diagram, etc
A: buy book, online manuals illegal due to copyright.

Q: (accessory) not running, help
a: CHANGE THE FUSES!

Q: (indecipherable gobbledygook in text speak)
A: (answers question, mutters to self about lack of grammar and typing skills in English speaking questioner)

in other words, I can usually figure out if the questioner is not familiar with the English language.

I ran into a couple very prominent technical questions. one guy was asking about the cam pulley on a VW 1.9 diesel. I know enough about cars to tell the guy he needs a special puller AND that there's usually a special installer required as well. (think I just made 5 bucks, there)

if I could plug this site, I'd ask some of you more tech headed guys (who probably are allready there) to give these poor people a hand.

I've also answered a lot of videogame console questions the same way
Q: this light is on, what does it mean?
A: time for a new console
(a combination of 360 RROD's, and PS3 YLOD's)
Q: console won't read X disk
A: CLEAN THE DISK!

the questions I'm running into seem to indicate, about 50% of the time, an absolute lack of any common sense !

if anybody's free to give a hand, these people seem to need it.

...sorry, but I don't get how these people are 'airheads'?

If I wanted a wiring diagram for something, yeah, I probably would ask somewhere on the internet to see if anyone had one that they wouldn't mind giving me a copy of? What's so bad about that?!

What?! You mean he didn't know that the cam pulley on a 1.9 VW diesel didn't need a specialist install?! What are they teaching in school these days...

Things like this do happen on the internet. People ask things that (shockingly) they don't know the answer to, and more than often don't have any surrounding expertise to back it up with. Maybe you're a little too quick to criticise those who have less knowledge than you in certain areas. Just an observation from what you've posted, I could be totally wrong.

Jondot: don't forget, these are Americans asking these questions. for some reason, people don't think to check even a FUSE. everything else (checking to see if a particular motor, switch, or other component) I can understand.
also, remember, most Americans just drive the cars, and don't do anything else, including changing lightbulbs. if you've ever been over here, I think you've figured out that a lot of people are clueless about the car and how it works. plus, it's not as easy to get parts over here...and definetly not as cheap, as most of the parts have to come from somewhere in Asia (including domestic sheet metal parts). my ex once told me he could buy a car part I needed for only £15, VAT included, and would probably cost no more than 5 to ship, that would cost me over thirty dollars BEFORE taxes and that I'd have to wait a couple three weeks to come over on a boat from China.

okay, someone FINALLY asked.

http://www.fixya.com

they need all sorts of experts. I found this while scanning for some additional instructions on fixing PS controllers (in case I missed something)

So you are complaining about people asking a question on a site specifically made for that purpose. You kind of answered yourself, most people are clueless, that is why there are sites like that.
