I saw this link on a site.

Top 10 Most Expensive Cars to Insure ... that cost less than $40K. They've left out the obvious ones, Lambo, BMW, Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes, Bentle ... this list goes on ...

Ford Mustang GT convertible $2,363 / $28,640 = 8.25%
Honda S2000 convertible $2,363 / $33,250 = 7.11%
Chrysler Sebring $1,788 / $24,045 = 7.44%
Toyota Celica GTS $2,114 / $22,750 = 9.29%
Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GTS $2,114 / $27,144 = 7.79%
Dodge Neon SRT-4 $2,028 / $20,955 = 9.68%
VW Passat W8 $1,856 / $39,735 = 4.67%
Honda Civic Hatchback $1,788 / $19,560 = 9.14%
Subaru WRX AWD Turbo $1,788 / $25,170 = 7.10%
Volkswagen GTI VR6 $1,788 / $22,070 = 8.10%

Makes it look like the S2000 is horribly set for insurance, tied for most expensive in the sub $40 group. However, when you calculate the percentage of the 'value' (cost) of the car it's the third lowest (closest to best) in this selection of 10, and as a true roadster (convertibles always being more expensive to insure). Beat only by the VW Passat (a sedan ...) and the Subaru WRX (another sedan, and by one one-hundredth of a percent). Makes me wonder where it places over all in percentage for the sub $40K group.

S2000, still bad ass in my books.

Also interesting to note, the BMW Z4 3L, and Porsche Boxter S, which are all direct competitors to the S2000, don't make it in this list because they cost more than $40K.

My insurance just went from £470 last year, to £370 this 👍 :D

Ford Escort RS Cosworths cost more to insure per annum than the cars cost to buy.

Jeremy Clarkson - one of our most prominant motoring journalists - was once quoted £14,000 to insure his for a year.

is that cuz they see him tearin apart cars on the TV and figure he'll do it in real life? or cuz of the neighborhood he lives in?

with that many years of age and experience under his belt it shouldn't be Half that even.. unless he has a very tarnished car ownership history :P

That's the case for tons of cars in Ontario if you're under 25. For example, if you have a new Chevy Cavalier (dirt cheap insurance) with a clean driving record and you're under the age of 25, you can expect to pay anywhere between 5000-9000 dollars to insure it for a year. I wanted to get a $5000 240SX from the early 90s a few months ago, but that plan ended once I found out how much I would have to pay for insurance .

But I'm surprised the Chrysler Sebring is on the list. I've driven one, and it's not a car that begs to be driven fast (unlike most of the other cars in the list). It's not that fast
of a car in actuality too. I'm also surprised that the RX-8, Miata, and the Tiburon (most frequently stolen car...) are not on the list.

But on the positive side, I checked the link to the least expensive cars to insure, and my mom's Santa Fe has the same premium as a Toyota Corolla

The car has little to no security precautions as standard, is a prime theft target, is the idol of the Barryboys clan, has too much power for the typical person who drives one and isn't designed to withstand impacts at the speeds it's capable of.

Insurers know that if a claim is going to be made on an Escort RS Cosworth it's going to be a BIG one. They are thus the same insurance group as a Ferrari Enzo, Aston Martin DB9 and Lamborghini Diablo (Group 20).

My first car cost £600 to insure for the year on a basic policy. My current car is 2.5 times as powerful, on a same weight chassis (but built for handling, rather than shopping) and is 10 insurance groups higher. But I pay a little over £400 a year - with every conceivable benefit thrown in.

i see....makes sense.. but sux really... imagine an old ford in the same class as super cars like an enzo... wow

sounds quick what's your current car? souns like an STi or Evo to me...;)

It's not all that quick - just my first car was rather slow. That said, it was about average for a first car.

I'll leave the 4WD/AWD rally specials to my brother. I go for the sexy-looking cars... :D

oops my mistake... i thought it was just underlined.. didn't know it was a link... hehe

cute little car.. i don't think it's girlie at all... the color is different too, kinda like candy orange like the FnF supra...

shame u can't modify it... i think it would look real nice lowered with some nice 16" or 17" rims... 👍

Insured my 1.2i Seat Ibiza for £565, with Pass Plus. Driving for less than a year.

Whats daft though is that I could have been insured on my bros 2.5 20v Volvo 850 GLT for £650...

Still my policy covers me to drive other peoples cars, /takes Volvos keys off table & runs outve house :sly:

I have a 1 litre Mini, cost me £1300 to buy and I spent £889 on Third Party Fire and Theft, in my own name. I've yet to do a Pass Plus, but will be when I get round to calling my drving instructor.

I did that pass plus. Everyone who passes their driving test in G.B. should do this since you get motorway lessons (well I did anyway).

When I was 17, the insurance for my Audi turbo quattro avant was not the cheapest!! The Audi I'm driving just now is in group 17 and no where near as much since I have 4 years no claims.

Having said that I'm toying with the idea of buying an ur-quattro which is group 19/20. I'll just stick it on a classic policy though! 👍 Limit the mileage and take it out on the weekends and drive my other car during the week.

Yeah I had a motorway lesson, & christ did it rain & rain & rain. More like driving a power boat I tell ya ;)

17 insuring a Audi turbo quattro avant, would love to have seen the look on the insurers face

My bro was 21 when he bought the 2.5 20V Volvo 850 & the insurer commented 'thats a very powerful car for your age' :D

Insurance quotes are based on so many things e.g. Postcode, security on the car, your age obviously, whether you are married ... bla bla bla. But one thing that insurers do look for is a history of the cars that you have been insured under. They also notice how you pay your premium. If you pay cash up front then that's a good sign to them.

So hopefully i'll be ok since i've insured three different types of Audi turbo's and had no crashes. If you have been insured on a relativley fast car previously then they would be inclined to give you a better quote. Just make sure you don't crash!!

Can't wait till I reach 26 cause that's when the premium supposedly drops by_quite_a margin. Still, we get shafted for car insurance!

That photo was probably the cheap camera (1.2MPi) with low sun. There's a couple of better ones (here and here) but I won't hotlink them 'cos they're massive (5MPi camera... :D). It's really a much nicer, deeper red... Well, it is now, after I spent 4 hours with T-Cut and Mer... :D

I can modify it, I just won't. Besides, 16" wheels would need lower profile tyres to keep the rolling radius in check, and that would have an adverse effect on handling. On a car designed for handling... :D

I don't even know what mine is. Seems like it was less than $100 a month though. Of course, my car is 12 years old and in less than emaculate condition.
