Hey guys, so, today was my first day of autocross with www.casc.on.ca.

I had a *HUGE* amount of fun. I'm really curious now, how many autocrossers there are on GTP.

Anyways, I found a video of one of the competitors just now. Link

This is the Twin Lakes Motor Club event, in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, at the Barrie Molson Centre. I am in this video @ 1:16-1:29, in the red Hyundai Accent. I know, it's not the fastest car in the world, and it's 16 seconds slower than the camera car... BUT IT'S FUN ENOUGH.

Regrets: not bringing suntan lotion.

Experiences: My first time was a 79 second run. :( I also made a huge mistake and that time was DQ'd anyways. But, my last run (8 runs, with one re-run because of a timing glitch) was a 67 second run! That's a 12 second improvement. And, I'm only 18, so I haven't been driving full sized cars too long (about half a year, never in competition before.)

Learned: the list's too long, guys. The first thing I learned (at the cost of my spine,) was that 40 psi is best for street tires, to avoid running over the sidewall, though, I swear I still did, regardless... So, I borrowed a very friendly man's manual tire pump, and did the work by hand. I'm attending college to become an Automotive Service Technician (mechanic,) though, so I enjoyed learning about it. There's not much to upgrade in H-stock (my class) within the SCCA Solo2 restrictions, so I can't swap *anything* at all. So, my "expertise" would simply go to repairs.

Did well: didn't hit a single cone all day! There shall be no orange on the red Accent!

Anyways, as per always, anyone's welcome to post, whether you are the world's best Autocrosser, or you've never done it. Feel free to discuss anything relevant.

I did a search, and I found nothing, so, I don't think there are any other Autoslalom threads.

Don't think we have a thread for this in particular, we do have a thread for people to share their racing experience(s).

In any case, I used to Auto-x when I lived in Colorado. Haven't had a car to use for it in a while but would like to get back into it in the near future. I don't have much to share, but here's a photo and a video when I had my turbocharged Miata.

(No sound at beginning, after that there's sound)

That Miata's pretty smooth looking.

Anyways, is there a benefit to 100% attack, or a more gentle approach?? Like, do you find your times were faster with a little wheelspin, or without??

Also, do people actually run 40 psi. in their tires??

Different tires would need different amounts of air, lots of air would get the tire heated up faster, but I can't imagine it giving an advantage of 1 minute of driving vs low air and more contact patch.

It looked a lot better than that when I sold it. (see here)

Wheel spin is pretty much bad in any form of racing. My car spun a bit due to having harder tires, but that was expected and not easy to eliminate with what I had available to me.

Also, do people actually run 40 psi. in their tires??

Can't really comment on that. I usually ran stock settings, +/- a few pounds depending on what I wanted the car to do.

Yeah, the guys here were all saying "you'll run over your sidewalls..."

And, alright, next time out, I'll try to focus on smoother, faster transitions between corners, rather than getting good speed on the straights. I reckon that there's time to be gained through heavy braking and decisive turning/throttle control.

Thanks, and, that Miata was way more mint than a Carfax search would say. ;) I've only been driving on the streets for about 2 years, so I haven't hit anything but a butterfly at autocross yesterday.

Meh, was a slight fender bender and the car was not written off by the insurance company. The new owner knew about it, so wasn't a big deal.

Naw, I know... I saw just a little bend in the front.

I don't even know what I meant with that, except just to say "Awesome looking car. Saying it was crashed is almost unfair because it was such a small bump." You know, hearing/reading "crash" in this case, is worse than the actual damage.

Ok, so I'm going to my first Auto Cross event in 2 weeks! I'm very excited to get out and learn what all it's about!

As far as vehicle, well, I'm using my Mum's Toyota Tacoma (Base everything, automatic, 2 door, 2WD, uses the same engine as the superCamry) with some rather average Hankooks. I know this is really on the wrong side of ideal, but as far as getting my feet wet and seeing if I wanna do it later down the road, I think this is good.

Anything I should know?

They allow trucks?

Indeed. The SCCA are nice about that sort of thing. As long as it isnt likely to roll, they don't care.

My Tracker, Jeep CJ series, Fiat 500 (non Abarth), Nissan Juke, and some other SUV's and taller vehicles are banned. But because bog-standard pickups are so low, they allow it. Any engine size too.

Although, my mate with the track-prepped Mustang and Focus is coming along, so even in the novice class I'll get blown away by him.

If the tyres on the Camry were in better shape, I'd use it. But thats not a possibility.

I dont make the rules, and I'm not saying it's fair either. But it IS in the appendix on cars allowed and not allowed.

And the truck they seem to have in mind is this

...Not this

Well I know that.

I'd like to know their reasoning for some of those cars, and it certainly doesn't have anything to do with ride height. Odd choices.

So, while everyone else was bothering with GT% and some cars with a bit more power, I was out racing!

Autocrossing my 2.2 Camry, I ended up first in H-stock! I was so excited, and I had a ton of fun. This has effectively sealed my interest in motorsport, and now I need to work on finding a car that I can take to autocross which isnt my fathers back-and-forth to work vehicle...

Video! Skip to 8:55 or something like that to see my 2nd run.

Right, well, I've got another event coming up this weekend! I've managed to convince my friend with the Track-day Mustang to come with me this time too! We're gonna set up a canopy over our parking sports and take ourselves way too seriously. Probably with matching shirts. All in all, should be a great day out!

Does anyone else autocross? I have a hard time believing that I am the only current member who does!

Welcome to the club. Soon you'll be itching like a crack fiend when you don't get to race. Been almost 6 months since I've been "clean" and I don't like it one bit :yuck:.

Anyway I run D-Stock in my 2010 Cobalt SS.

I can't wait to get back to the states to drive again.`

Wow!!!... Nice pic of the GT-R and a good driver at that too. 👍 By the way, the tires looks almost done, MC.

Saw a GTR at the last Autocross. The acceleration off the line was unreal. Sadly, the driver wasn't any good..

Had a great day at the AutoX yesterday. fairly decent course and i was able to tie everything together and come up with some solid runs

placed 10th out of 82 cars ( 13th out of 85 total but there were 2 shifter karts and a caterham) was top 1-3 maybe with street tires

We only got 4 runs due to trying tof finish up before the rain so I finished with a 40.4 on my 4th and final run but got 39.8 in my first fun run at the end of the day

I alternated back and forth from using LC off the line as it was sort of tight.. on my 3rd run I launched and immediately short shifted to 2nd. it didnt shift and i had to shift again through the slalom.. not sure why it didnt shift either i didnt grab the paddle as hard as i wanted to or it was too soon after launching

here are my best 2 runs

39.8 with LC

40.4 with out
