Well I access from work (T3) and home (Cable), :D so I'm for the idea, but our analogue chums might not be so enthusiastic...

a "With Avatar's List" link on the members page as an option would be good....

WHOA!?!?!? "Young Sir" Thanks for the compliment, you made my day. Lately, I've been getting alot of "Excuse me sir", and "Hello sir" from the neighbor kids, making me feel so old all of a sudden.

He he he! I learned a long time ago, when I was working in a fruit and veg farm, which gave discounts to pensioners, that it was better to overcharge than to question their status!

But I'm glad it cheered you up!

Ah - I get cable at home on Saturday, so I'm all for it!

I never had to use dial up for my personal Internet connection, fortunately. But you're in for a seriously cool treat (: Do you happen to know what speed your cable provider gives at the user end? Our's used to be 4mbit which would be about 450KB/s total transfer speed. But it's come way down from there. The most I've seen lately is around 280KB/s total file sends. Pretty good, but nothing like it used to be.

Much better than 56kbit with a max of 6KB/s though (:

Oh, and what are they charing for cable in your part of the world? I pay $40(USD) for mine.

Er - the cable goes into the cable modem and then into the computer....My partner's the IT guru.

Telstra are quoting maximums of 512/128 (whatever that means), but I have no idea what the typical speeds are. Someone else who uses Bigpond Cable could tell you that.

They're charging about $72 Oz a month, which when converted to $US is a touch under what you mentioned.

We sat down and did the sums on what we were paying on a second phone line, plus phone calls and dial up access, and it pretty much worked out lineball. Factor in access speed and not having to dial in and cable was a straight up starter.

I am looking forward to it - dial-up's a pain in the arse.

You got that right! And I did the same math. A phone line was $20, and dialup was $20. Then we had to add on some other stupid fees and it came to MORE than a cable modem. No brainer there.

Well, congradulations on your purchase. I bet it leads to many more lost hours on the computer (:

Well, hopefully less hours, but you're probably right!

Don't mean to be picky, chief - but (here it comes) - it's 'congratulations'

Well, I never claimed spelling as a strong suite (:

You'll think less hours, because you won't be waiting for stuff to download. But actually you'll spend more time because you realize this enormous world opened up right at your finger tips, with "instant access". Or ... at least that's what happened to me. Followed by dropping out of college.

Twice.

Which wasn't too bad. Now I'm -the- System Administrator at a big advertising agency. No complaints here. And I'm back in school (three years later ...).

Moderation is the key to everything.

Well, I've had good quality connections at work since 1997, but when you're sitting on your bum on a Friday night with a beer, you might be right.

I spend a fair bit of time on there now, but with searching being so much faster I think it will broaden the horizons a bit - am looking forward to it.

I am glad I got my degree done before the web went mainstream, though.

That's a very good thing. I'm still wondering if I'll stay in school long enough to get my degree. Heck, I don't even know what I want to major in. Maybe I should start with that.

Um - you kinda need goals there, big fella.

I got halfway through my economics and accounting degree and realised I didn't want to be an accountant.

That'll hit your motivation.

Dad advised me to finish it - so I did. Best advice he ever gave me.

I've bounced around with different interests my whole life. I think the biggest downfall for my generation is that everything is an option, so we're undecisive. Lately I've been strongly concidering Elementary Education as my major, with minors in 'mathematics' (don't know what kind of math would be required), Physical Education, and Information Technologies. That way I could play with kids all day, teach them math, and play with computer stuff.

I figure if I can deal with 30 whiney professional artist brats for 5 days a week, I can handle kids. They've got more energy, but they don't complain nearly as much (: And if I'm planning on taking over the world some day, I've got to start working on my army.

Well I'm with Telewest in the UK. Since I have the TV and phone already, they reduce the broadband charge from £33 to £25 per month, which is reasonably in line with what LoudMusic's paying. I think they quote 512Kb access, but I'm seeing real-world file transfers in the 65-100KB/s range, which is nice.

I'd worked out the maths too. We moved house, and changed TV, phone and internet providers all at the same time. We went from crappy TV quality, overpriced telephony and crap internet access, to digital cable, cheap calls (especially the free local calls to other cable providers - big news in the UK phone market) and broadband. Best domestic decision ever!

Definitely. At University we had a UNIX network, with OpenWindows and the first versions of NCSA Mosaic! I think I wrote my first web page for Mosaic v0.5, or something like that. Before even tables were part of HTML!

Having a permanent connection is so liberating - mail comes in when it comes in, you can have instant-message chats with people, check web sites etc, all without worrying how much of a phone bill you're racking up. I'm doing web development now which requires a constant connection to the web server - 6 months ago (B.C.!!!) I couldn't have contemplated it.

Whew...I'm all done, and I'm very happy with the result! I like it so much, I'll be using it as our default member list in the new GTPlanet (it turns out load times aren't that big of an issue after all). So, you've still got to wait a few more weeks to see it, but I think you'll like it! :D

Load times shouldn't be bad after you've got everyone's avatars cached, either from the list or from the threads.

I'm totally pumped! I'm curious to see what everyone is using. I bet most people don't have an avatar at all ...

Yeah, you're right. After using the forums for any length of time, there's a good chance you'll have already cached the most of the images. :) And, you're also right that there's many people who never bother using an avatar. But, at least the first three pages (when organized by top posters) is pretty much filled up with everyone.

Yeah, there's approximately 971 people ( ) who have yet to confirm their registration (they're still counted in the member numbers, they just don't have access to post messages, use PM's etc.). I've considered deleting the accounts, but, then again, a lot of them are receiving the weekly newsletter, which is constantly reminding them of the site and keeping our URL in their head...

Interesting. How about people that haven't posted in months, or haven't posted since the day they registered? (: I've noticed a few of those kinds of accounts as I stroled through the member list.

Yeah, I've also been considering pruning based on the last time they even visited the site (maybe if they aren't subscribed to the newsletter, haven't activated their account, and haven't visted the site in over a month).
