Has anyone upgraded to this yet?

I recently upgraded all my computers (was on 7.5) and I'm loving it.

Smooth interface, easy use. The scanning is awesome. Really deep, fast, and picks up tons of stuff.

It really is a great program.

Yep, same here. Already picked up a worm that avast couldn't find
Looks good too :)

Yeah, it's really good. The interface always looked like it was nearly 10 years old... now it looks better and is easier to use.

Version 7 had pop-up windows that appeared whenever it updated. Does version 8 do the same, or does it do it in the background?

haven't seen it update yet, so don't know.
The only thing i saw is that it gives you a small message saying when it begins scanning and when it stops.

Also when searching with google you'll see an icon after the results representing save and unsave sites.

Also just noticed that it actually scans your incoming mail when using gmail in your browser :)

I've been using it for a while. Its nice that it combines all of the AVG Free programs.

This was the first feature to get up my nose. I disabled it through IE7's add-ons.

It was sucking mega-bandwidth scanning those Google results. 👎

Yeah, I noticed that too. I was curious to leave it on since I wanted to see what it said isn't safe, especially with what I look at sometimes. :P

I may just disable it because nothing has even been unsafe.

that reminds me. since our comp crash, I gotta put every one of our barrier programs back up. this new one comes with Norton, and that's damn near useless nowadays...it's too complicated to try and update, and looks like it's a "trial"

Well, I'm going back to 7.5, 8.0 shuts down the program used to get an IP address, therefore making it impossible to get online. I was really hoping it was going to be cool like everyone said, but everything worked with 7.5, so I'm sticking with that, for now atleast.

AVG 7.5 will stop getting updates after the end of this month, so I would suggest moving onto something else if 8.0 isn't an option.

Yeah, the thing is convincing my dad that AVG 8.0 isn't the holy grail, and that we need to use something else.

I use ClamWin on my "server" that runs Windows Server 2003. AVG free doesn't work on server editions of Windows since it assumes its in a commercial environment. Nothing commercial about my bedroom. :P

I think AVG has really gone downhill with this version. I'm probably going to start looking around for something else.

What a shame.

Care to tell us why?
They offered up AVG Anti-Spyware under the guise of it being 'free'. After a while, you had to pay for it, so it was a trial version. Not free at all.

It's increasingly harder to find the free version of their anti-virus from their site.

And now this latest edition came with all that browser invading crap. Which, now that I've disabled it, has the icon in my system tray in a constant 'alert' state.

While the product they offer may be improving, the way they go about it is not.

My icon is fine. Did you download all the updates?

As far as I remember, their anti-spyware program was free, at least the scanning portion. Don't remember having much trouble with it and it detected somethings that other programs couldn't.

Their antivirus on the otherhand, I have found to be not so effective.

Yup, just did it then too.

Still 'alert'. I have auto-updates turned off as well as the web browser scanner thing. I even turned each one on individually, and if I turn either of them off it's in 'alert'. :indiff:

Dumb.
