Gilles Villeneuve Vs Rene Arnoux in Dijon 79. That has been posted here a few times I think. Still an amazing battle though. Gilles had less power, and worn tyres, yet he still beat Arnoux to 2nd place.

Such an amazing battle, and that was for 2nd place too! Weren't they nearly penalized for racing like that? I find it odd for people that thought that wasn't necessary. Imagine if F1 had racing like that today.

Are the worn tyres the explanation for those huge amounts of smoke occasionally coming out of the red car (which I suppose was Villeneuve)?

I think the smoke was Gilles trying to brake later than the laws of physics allowed him to!

They were nearly penalised for that. Mario Andretti didn't see any problems with it and described it as, "2 young lions clawing at each another".

Aaaah, those were the days... When a driver could pick up a car and run round the track with it as Gilles so often did. And he had to as he never really had the best car, with the possible exception of '79.
