Awful upload speed.

Hi.

On Friday my Netgear modem kept cutting out, with the internet light flashing yellow before it would re-connect a couple of minutes later. Since then I tried to join my weekly race series hoping my modem would hold up and I get disconnected as soon as the race starts.

After that I did a speed test and found my PING to be at 80 upwards, when it used to be at about 40, and my upload speed to be less than 100 kbps. :nervous: My download speed is normal. (1.7 mbps.)

I then decided to try my other modem to see if my modem ws the issue. Voila, I was getting 30 ms ping and 380kbps upload (normal for me). Yet when I woke up today the speeds had dropped back to their previous levels. :(

Any help is much appreciated. 👍

Here's what I'm talking about:

Once I read NetGear... I screamed inside. I have never had any luck with that brand, that company, and its tech support. My connection through a NetGear router would just cut out and I'd have to reset things, etc. to get it to connect. Once I ditched it for a Cisco, I had no problems. I lost just a touch of speed, but gained range. I hope you find an issue for it without having to ditch your modem.

The Netgear is my primary modem, but I'm having the same problem with the modem my ISP provided. (Thompson?)

Also had problems with Netgear in the past. The modem your ISP provided might have the same ethernet adapter as your Netgear modem, as those are made by Atheros and are very dodgy.

I tried resetting the Thomson router again and did a speed test which came out with 36 ping and 0.38mbps upload (wired). But when I try on my laptop (wireless) I get 28 ping but 0.08 upload still. :(

I havn't had a problem with Netgear routers myself, but I'll sure keep an eye out.

As for your slow speeds, there's a few possibilities:

1: If you have a Data Cap, you've gone over your data allowance on the upload portion, so you've been slowed to Dial-up upload speeds (watch your download too, same thing could happen).

2: Your ISP is just having a bad day(s). ISP's will never be 100%, like everything in life. They might have connection trouble, might be servicing the lines, any number of possibilities.

3: That might just be the plan you've paid for. You have a (what I would consider) horribly slow downlaod speed anyway, so I'd assume that 0.08Mbps is still slow for that plan, but maybe that's how they've configured it. You might have just got lucky with higher speeds up untill now, they may have had a software glitch that allowed you to have higher speeds than what you're paying for. They may have now fixed it.

My suggestion: Get on the blower too 'em, give 'em what for. Don't be a little 🤬 and play innocent, a bit of a yell never hurt anyone (besides, they're trained to put up with it).

Piss of the guys that are in control of your your parent's account. Great way to get what you want. :odd:

^^ Worked for me so far. I mean, if it's just a simple thing like the connection's dropped out for a day or two, there's no need to start climbing walls. But if you've had crappy speeds for nearly a week, they need to know about it and that you're not impressed.

How do you call your ISP...?

We do have a data cap but it's way higher than we need really. So I doubt it's that, but I'll give it a check.

I realise that sometimes your internet is a bit dodgy but this problem has being ongoing since Friday. :(

Also we've always had a 300-400kbps upload speed (5-6years?), our download has been anything from 0.1-2.8mbps. :ill:

Just did another speed test- it seems the modem reset has bumped the speeds up a bit. :)

Yes, these speeds are ok, on the main PC (wired) we're getting 0.38 upload. 👍

I'll continue monitoring the speeds and see what happens. :)

Thanks for all your help guys, but the problem seems to have resolved itself.

Plugged the netgear back in and got this over wireless. :D

Sounds like you have a DSL connection using your phone line?

There could have been problems in your area with the lines causing you to disconnect/reconnect. Did you call your ISP about it? What did they say?

The broadband comes through our phone line, no fibre optic out here. :)

We called the ISP and they said just leave their modem in for three days to see if that kept disconnecting, which was helpful as the disconnecting had stopped.

But after 4 days the problem seems to have resolved- back up to our regular speeds. :)
