actually "drifting" started in the 60's as a faster way to get around corners now it turned into an expensive waste of tires

Then again it involves subjective scoring from a panel of judges, which puts it on a par with figure-skating and diving. Requiring of skill but no sport.

Hmmm...

I wonder what would happen if they watched Brokeback Mountain...

In the early 60's, we lost all of San Francisco when someone found an old print of "Reefer Madness" (1936).

It's faster only under certain conditions. For example, a Mini (original) on Lombard Street would make great use of it's handbrake. It's also good in WRC, where you need to constantly keep the car on boil, and it actually helps to propel the car in the direction you want to go before you get there.

But a rear-drive car (and probably any-drive) will be best served by clean lines on a racetrack, even around 1st-gear corners. Conventional road surfaces are meant to be high-grip, and washing the rear end wide around the corner does two bad things: the path ends up being longer, and you lose speed spinning the wheels in the wrong direction of intended travel.

D1 drivers are going seriously fast sideways, but clean lines around the same course will produce much lower lap times. Then again, that's not really their intent...

Harry - I like your posts. I do. But you must stop making one after another after another. Use the Edit button (bottom-right, each post) to put extra information in your first one. I've just merged your two in this thread.

Right. Sorry. I'll keep better track of stuff.

Well, the F&F bad news just got worse.

In the past week, several (!) stupid kids have tried to emulate the movie on the few local canyon roads we frequent.

Long story short, they all drove their cars off the side, and didn't come out of them.

So, aside from the poor families and friends who've lost people due to movie-inspired stupidity, our roads have now become practical police stations.

I read something similar to that about how canyon racing has now suddenly become popular....

Rule 1) Let them get rid of themselves.
