Just another pointless thread, but does anyone have an explanation as to why October is the month with least amount of bans, according to the banned user log.

No bans on GTP since Sept. 30th, meaning no bans this month.

Er... I'm bored, so feel free to suggest I find better ways to employ my free time.

There's been bans - advertising spambots (lots of them, for some reason, and always in the Leaderboard forums) and a few re-members (including PS - twice this month, I think).

Yes, the cycle, not suprisingly, follows the school calendar. September, kids have returned to school, but aren't really spending time on homework, thus more time for GTP. October hits, the school work ramps up, less time for GTP.

Less people on the site = less bannings. Most of the bannings happen quickly and quietly. So far, I believe Famine is in the lead with less than 2 minutes from "Post to Bannination". Of course, that is not counting the pre-emptive strikes.

Yeah, I haven't banned anyone in at least a month. My ban stick is getting dusty. :sly:

I find these kind of stats rather interesting :p
I haven't seen as much post-whoring about recently, like Der Alta said it must be that.

Yeah, i was just looking at the banned memberlist the other day. Not as bad as some places i wouldn't think, but still interesting reading in that topic. ;)

Hm, who was PS?

I noticed at least 5 spam/bots banned, but Ive been waiting for a log update...

For some reason, the Banned User Log is my favorite thread... :scared:

Wasn't Public Secrecy the first of his monikers?

Sakiale: PS, Public Secrecy, Plague Ghost and about ten different user names are all of the same person; a user who was banned once for being an a$hole and who subsequently thought he'd tick off mods by re-registering and re-being an a$hole.

He did many other things, like hijacking other accounts and similar off-limits stuffm, but I think that's his story in a nutshell.

i think a couple have been banned lately, but haven't been added, such as (backwards N)ismo, re registration of Alpine (you know)

I have a question, how come some people are getting added lately, but it says

"last edited by Swift, May 04 2006 at 2:19am"?

There's little mileage in noting all of the spambots - precisely because they all commit a single offense, and it'd be very dry reading.

Banned re-members are generally added to the first of their pseudonyms, rather than creating a new entry for them.

Edit: I've just browsed our deadlist and amended the Banned User Log to include a couple of recent involuntary absentees.

Which, if that's his aim, is a resounding failure.

It takes us far less effort to ban him than he takes to register...

The "edited by" part doesn't get changed unless a Mod tells it to. Moderators, if they edit any post, don't get that messege appearing unless they want it to be there on purpose, maybe for organisation reasons.

He doesn't re-join to be an a$hole. If you read any of his new accounts, you'd see he just posts a normal post. His main goal is to see how fast a mod can find and ban him, not tick them off.

Ever hear the expression, "A leopard never changes his spots"?

so he probably does that just for fun, i think the only time i've actually seen him was with "The Alien" account, in the guess the game thread

...which is intended to tick us off. And, as Famine notes, it doesn't so much tick us off as bore us mightily.

Agreed.

Ciao!

Im rather happy Mr. Deap is gone. He was really full of himself and offended me by calling me a PGR n00b, which I am not :p

Let's not turn this thread into a place to complain about previous bannings.

With that said, I've noticed a few members have followed the PS route and are similarly banned on site. Although they've "tried" to become respectable members again, it usually doesn't last long and they go back to their old ways pretty quickly.

Just wondering, who was the first person banned from this glorious site?

I think this place is more addicting than ciggarettes!

In this version of the site, it looks like Coreyxtreme in June 2004 - though obviously the site as a whole, and so some bans, predate this.

Ah, So inorder to keep the post in the banned user log to be kept shorter, the older bans are deleted?

Just glanced at the Banned User Log... seems some updating has been going on and the "less bans in October" has been disproved.

No - the banned user log is a relatively recent creation and, before the site looked like, or similar to, this, bans were not automatically logged in the Mod Control Panel. The oldest logged, dated ban is Coreyxtreme.

Have you considered graphing or gathering statistics regarding the number of banned users? It might be interesting to see the trend line over the years.
