I said the Audi, but to me it's really a toss up between that and the Benz. I would be more than happy with either and wouldn't wish I had gotten the other. The M5 just doesn't seem to do that.

Oh, and you might want to give a little more info than the engine and 0-60 times.

'Course, I'd have to drive them before I really made a choice. ;)

I'd definitley take the RS6, because it looks cooler, and has AWD, which is a boon in NY.

I'd happily take the Benz out of the three, even if it isn't the fastest.

Why?

I love my big, naturally aspirated V8s, and simply put, a V10 or a boosted V10 just doesn't cut it. Furthermore, the E63 Wagon looks far less suspicious than the other two, still not much different from a regular E350 Wagon at best... Just the way I like it.

The ONLY cars that would upset those picks would be the following:

Dodge-Magnum-SRT8-TOP.jpg

The Dodge Magnum SRT-8: Just as much fun, only a bit slower, half the price.

The Holden (Pontiac?) Commodore SS-V Estate. Two words: MANUAL TRANSMISSION. Hell yes!

I'm breaking the trend and going with the M5.

Big Merc's are Ok, but a bit to run of the mill for me, the Audi is a great car (and a good drive based on my experience with its predecessor) and a close call, but I've gone with the M5.

Scaff

I'd like to see a shot of the Merc's interior before making a vote.
For cars of this nature I wouldn't really consider performance a deciding factor. They are all fast as heck and far faster than anything I've owned. Plus, they are all very similar in performance.
Overall I think it would be a matter of interior appeal, exterior appearance, and handling (followed by the possibility of transmissions making a difference but that issue isn't more important to me than the other factors listed).

The Magnum doesn't come close to any of these three. On paper you could come up with some argument, but on the road, it wouldn't stand a chance against these. Also, have you seen the trunk in the Magnum? For it's size, it isn't much of a wagon.

Audi for me... I've never liked the Mercedes lineup, and the BMw just undercuts the Audi.

I choose M5, though I think Audi has best looks out of the three. I still love the way M5 looks and it is the lightest out of the three. So this is my lineup (1st) would be M5 for pure power and being the lightest though the slowest at least from 0-60. (2nd) would be RS6 for beautiful design and raw power, but weights over 2 tons and is the heaviest out of the three.(3)Merc though it's still a good and nice car it looks outdated compared to the other two and interior looks very busy and confusing. But that's just my opinion :)

I like everything you said only I'd choose the Audi first then the Merc. But here's a more specific breakdown of the three for me.

BMW M5 Touring = love the exterior, love the noise, and love the German-ness of it. Where it fails is the interior isn't as good as the Audi or Merc and thats where I'd spend most of my time is inside the car.

Mercedes E63 AMG estate = love the exterior, love the noise MORE than the BMW, really love the interior, and I love anything with an AMG badge.

Audi RS6 estate = I love everything about it, there is absolutely nothing I don't like.

So, I choose the RS6 estate by a slim margin over the Merc.

RS6. Come on, who doesn't love a car with boxed-flare fenders?

It's more powerful. I like the interior the best. It's got AWD, so that you can make like a rocket up to the ski slopes.
And, it's brand-new. Which can't be said for it's brethren.

(Note: I would prefer the sound of the E63's V8 to any V10, but the rest of the car just doesn't match the Audi for me. Which is why the Mercedes would be my Second Pick. The M5 would not be considered. Ugly exterior, ugly interior, least powerful, and severely lacking in the torque department).

you realise that the "pure power" you state for the M5 touring is eclipsed by the other two right. pretty significantly if you look at torque?
and that the weight difference between the AMG and M5 is a measly 30lbs or so?

you can have your own reasons or picking them the way you did, but you state power. and low weight. as though you didnt actually look at the numbers. look again.

neanderthal of course I looked at the numbers and I know M5 is the slowest from these competitors, and yes amg and m5 has only 30lbs difference but M5 is 451lbs lighter then RS6. Now that is a lot of extra weight don't you agree? Obviously none of these wagons are light weight nor they are intended to be a lightweight sport car. By saying pure power I meant N/A, and of course you don't really think 500hp is not powerful do you? I drove quite a few m5 sedans though and while it's not as torquey as I wish it was it has an awesome acceleration. Am I clear now? :D

I think that difference right there just comes down to personal tastes, as they're both quite different in attitude and appearance. I love the Audi, don't get me wrong, but it just doesn't seem nearly as bad-ass as the Mercedes. I'm sure that the Audi is much faster, I'd probably even wager that it handles better, but the sheer brutality of the E63 is enough to keep me interested...

...Like before, its much the same with the American/Aussie counterparts. They take a very old-school approach to the whole thing (big engine + wagon = bad-ass), and at least for us, they're moderately affordable. Assuming that Pontiac does get the "G8X" as some have effectively dubbed it on GMI, the idea of a car that size with the LS7 and a manual transmission is pants-tightening indeed...

no. because the merc is still NA power. still out accelerates the BMW. as does the RS6. so your power thing is null and void. all the cars have that power or more. BMW has the least power but your praising its power.

in a comparison of a ford taurus wagon and a BMW M5 you could state power and id be sold on your argument. in this company its beyond redundant. the car is out muscled. power cannot be a decisive factor.

i agree they are all weighty but your power argument is not making sense.

I would agree completely.

Thing is if it was based solely on engine "brutality" and or "bad-ass" as you so rightfully put it I would pick the Merc over just about anything else--not just from German manufacturers either but the whole world. And this is cemented even further by me having driven (the **** out of I might add) a CLS63 AMG recently--Merc has some devilishly brilliant engines. 5.5L V8 Merc vs the LS1? I'll take the Merc unit no matter the extra price difference. And lets not even bring the 6.2L Merc into the equasion otherwise GM would be a vast distant second. My love for Merc's is endless. But the Audi to me speaks to my calmer more mature sophisticated side. It still looks ferocious while being safe and practical. Plus, the noise from that Audi V10 is awsome all by itself too actually.

Hah, sometimes we do think alike you and I. ;)

Neanderthal, I know that MB is N/A , hey I don't know what don't you understand here, I can say "Raw" "Pure" "Exhilarating" it's just an expression. Yes I KNOW ,I GET IT that merc and RS6 out accelerates M5 there's no question. It was just an expression that's all there was, you seem to fail to realize that, or you just wanna talk about it :) So your argument here is null and void. :D

Has that SS-V Estate come out in production yet?

Anyway it'll be close match between M5 and RS6, but simply because of its looks, RS6 :)

If you need the practicality of an estate/wagon version of an already large car, why wouldn't you also want the added security of AWD?

RS6 FTW!

I chose the RS6 because I think its the best looking of the 3. I think that it has the best looking interior and the best quality at that by quite a large margin over the M5 atleast.
I also chose the RS6 as my first choice due to it having a rumoured 600hp, and the quattro 4wd capabilities to put all that power to the floor. Then I also chose the audi for the gact that its engine is a V10 Bi-Turbo. This will make it easy to tune which im sure many RS6 customers will do.

The merc comes second, its a very handsome car and very capable at that. I would have probably tied it with the M5 had the BMW not have such and ugly exterior in comparison, and a rather lacklustre interior for its price.

So my verdict is:

1st RS6
2nd E63 AMG
3rd M5

Not yet, as far as I know. Its coming, eventually. I believe it will be the car that "officially" debuts between the Ute and the Monaro. We just don't know if it will come to the United States or not yet...

RS6 all the way. my father just got a used S4 and i fell in love with performance audis. its pretty much the perfect car. now with audi winning the horsepower wars its that much more appealing.

Well, after considering the options, even without interior shots, I've decided my vote goes to the RS6.
The primary reason... AWD. 👍
I live in Louisiana, it rains here an incredible amount, I'm sure it is probably one of the 10 most wet areas in America.
So, with rain of that quantity, I've got to go with a car that will really get the power down. Fact is, there's not much point in having tons of power if you can't get it to the road. Under normal circumstances all of these can do that but under wet conditions I'm sure the Audi has the advantage. 👍
