'Star Trek' Icon Doohan Dies
Jul 20, 10:46 AM EST

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and motion pictures who responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty," died early Wednesday. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. at his Redmond, Wash., home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said.

The Canadian-born Doohan was enjoying a busy career as a character actor when he auditioned for a role as an engineer in a new space adventure on NBC in 1966. A master of dialects from his early years in radio, he tried seven different accents.

"The producers asked me which one I preferred," Doohan recalled 30 years later. "I believed the Scot voice was the most commanding. So I told them, 'If this character is going to be an engineer, you'd better make him a Scotsman.'"

The series, which starred William Shatner as Capt. James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as the enigmatic Mr. Spock, attracted an enthusiastic following of science fiction fans, especially among teen-agers and children, but not enough ratings power. NBC canceled it after three seasons.

When the series ended in 1969, Doohan found himself typecast as Montgomery Scott, the canny engineer with a burr in his voice. In 1973, he complained to his dentist, who advised him: "Jimmy, you're going to be Scotty long after you're dead. If I were you, I'd go with the flow."

"I took his advice," said Doohan, "and since then everything's been just lovely."

That's a real shame. I'm a bit of a Star trek fan, enough to feel sympothy for him passing away.

RIP James Doohan. (Scotty)

Didn't we already lose DeForest Kelley ? Nimoy, Shatner, Koenig, Takei, and Nichols are all still hanging around I believe. But they're not going to be around forever.

Perhaps unlike a few of the others in that list, Doohan will NEVER be forgotten. Beam me up scotty is one of the most famous lines in all of entertainment history - and so his television character is immortalized.

And most famously-misquoted - it was never said..!

DeForest Kelley died of stomach cancer in 1999. James Doohan has been in a wheelchair for years, though still attended events and occasionally spoke, despite the obvious difficulties and discomfort it caused him.

Trivia

  • James Doohan's middle name was Montgomery (as in... Scott)
  • James Doohan effectively invented the Klingonee language.
  • Has appeared with both the original and TNG cast - in the series AND the Generations film. The only other main actors from the original series to appear in the TNG series are... DeForest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy.
  • Was the only Star Trek main actor not to appear in Futurama.

And now, I'm off to watch The Wrath of Khan.

And so dies the second worst Scottish accent in tv history. I liked scotty :(

Seriously? I'm having trouble believing that but I guess it could be true. Now I have to watch all of the old episodes to see if Kirk ever says it... or I could just google it.

Ok google knows. Kirk actually said "Kirk to Enterprise... Beam us up Scotty."

That's pretty freakin' close.

Yep, but "Beam me up, Scotty" was never uttered, despite being the phrase everyone associates with him.

Weird, huh? :D

Scotty to La Forge: Och laddie. You didnae tell him how long it'd really take?

Even people who didn't watch Star Trek knew Scotty. We'll miss you! :(

Takei? Was that Asian dude on the show Japanese? I always thought he was Chinese. Cool! 👍

I was sad when Bones died but, this is devastating. Arguably the most enjoyable character in all of Star Trek.

:(

Another interesting fact about Doohan I heard on the news. Before his acting career, he served in the Canadian Army during WWII. He was part of the Canadian contingent that stormed Juno Beach on D-Day, and got shot in the finger while participating in the attack.

I could've sworn he was in the episode with the nerd brain. he just wasn't on the planet with them. I think they meet him on the space ship afterwards.

He was replaced by "Welshie". His response to Futurama was, apparently, just "No way."

a6m5 - George Takei, and his character Hikaru Sulu, is Japanese.

Ev0 - Indeed. Watch "The Trouble With The Tribbles" and you'll see clearly he's missing a finger...

He invented the Scottish language too! :D

Seemingly he used a Scottish accent as that gave him more authority. That should be a lesson for everyone here! :D

 I gotta question for you. How believable was Scotty's accent?

Not all that bad an accent really; the Scots brogue can vary quite a bit and that gives actors accents a certain amount of leeway.

I shall miss him too - Scotty was a great character with some memorable lines. The one Famine quotes above is one of my favourites. The worst? Probably "There be whales here" from Star Trek IV :cringe:.

A good man as well as part of an iconic series.

Touring Mars
he he... they're going to fire his ashes out into space... how cool is that? RIP Scotty - he very well may end up boldly going where no man has ever been before...

I read that and thought it was something I would want to do but after reading up on it I found out that they only shoot a few grams of the ashes up and then after a while they reenter the atmosphere and burn up. You can read it here. I'll go back to wanting to be part of an artificial reef.

A few more Doohan facts:

1) Atteneded acting school with Leslie Nielsen and Tony Randall.

2) When shot in WWII he was shot 6 times: one in the finger, four in the leg, and one in the chest. The chest shot was stopped by his metal cigarrette case.

3) He has 9 children, the youngest, Sarah, was born in 2000, when he was 80. (You old dog!) :sly:

Scotty, rest in peace.
