Becoming ambidextrous, how far have you got???

I have this odd hobby which is to try to be able to use both hands at any task as equally well as possible with minimal brain power.
So far I can use a computer mouse, throw a ball, arm wrestle, eat, carry things, wipe things with a cloth with either hand, but not quite yet writing and guitar (which I doubt anyone can do equally well with their wrong hand!)

Sorry U2fanman, it still doesn't feel like a girl's doing it even if you use your left hand - try sitting on your left hand for 10 minutes first, making it go numb - then give it a go - its much more realistic nod, nod, wink, wink :sly:

Ontopic, I'm left handed by nature, but with my right hand I can eat, throw things, and use a mouse.

I'm pretty sure a LOT of left-handed people (myself included) can use a mouse right handed since most FPS games all but require it. Anywho, it's not much different than using your right pointer finger to distinguish something on a flat surface.

I was on the AFJROTC Drill Team and can spin a ten pound rifle like a...well...a right-handed person. lol Trust me, most right-handed people have a lot of problems doing that, too. ROFL
 
I'm almost able to write equally with my left hand as I've broken my right scaphoid bone twice and sprained my right wrist several times.

Playing football.

Or rugby.

Or...
 
Who can complete Solitaire in 65 seconds with either hand though?
And yes I have started practicing ambidextrousity (?) because I fear that I may break my right wrist playing footy or kart racing or summin'! And BTW, when you use one hand for some tasks like writing, and your other hand for less demanding tasks you are 'cross-lateral', quite common in lefties.
 
I'm predominantly left handed in that I can only eat and write left handed. Everything else though, I'm equally good. In many cases, my right is better.

Actually, being a lefty, I object to the term "ambidextrous" (literally "Equally right-handed") and instead prefer "ambisinisterous".
 
It's spelt ambisinistrous and I'm not 100% sure but it's more of an opposite to ambidexxtrous.

As for my quest to become ambidextrous, I'd hardly call anything like that a hobby. I'm pretty good with both my hands naturall although I can't write as well with my left I can do pretty much everything else.

Ambidextrous literally means "Equally right handed" and has come to mean good with both hands. "Dexterity" is manual skill.

Ambisinistrous literally means "Equally left handed" and has come to mean rubbish with both hands.

Even the French - with leftie Napoleon - get in on the act. "Maladroit" means clumsy, but literally means "Bad right hand", because, obviously, the left hand is useless so it doesn't matter HOW good it is since it'll never make up for a bad right hand.

Bastards.
 
I only write left-handed (and, err...). In the Dark Ages I'd have been burned at the stake for being a witch because I COULD write... Or possibly a warlock.

Actually, I do handle a sword left handed too, but everything else is done right-handed with a leftie lilt. Cricket is fun - I just change my stance once they've set the field, because I can bat either handed. Hockey is fun since my reverse sweep is just as good - if not better - than my normal one.
 
I write left handed and play snooker left handed. Everything else I'm stronger with my right.

Famine, that hockey trick is pretty cool for us. Dummy'ing players has never been so easy.

I can do that with cricket too. I've always naturally batted left handed but can get much more power off my right hand. The few times I've played baseball I've batted left handed but at primary school, rounders was always with my right.

Just saw the topic and thought I would mention that I play lacrosse.

In that game it's a big deal to make sure you can cradle, catch, run, and throw with both hands. 👍

I got a long ways into it and because of that I got to the point where training for lacrosse required me to do little things in day to day life with the left hand.

Brushing my teeth, holding a fork, little things that I never noticed how much I used my right hand for.

After a bit of time you start to get more and more co-ordination with the weaker hand and it pays off in your game (lacrosse, hockey, whatever).

So there you have it. ;)

Here's sumthing that I just thought of suggesting 💡 , coz I tried it last month and failed badly, try swapping the controls around for the 2 analogue sticks on the ps2 controllers etc for driving games so that the left stick is used 4 accel/decceleration and the right one is for steering, unless you are CRAZILY :crazy: talented it would take ages to master that trick! :sly:

In theory, that's actually better for the right handed player since they'd be steering with their dominant hand. The whole reason the steering is on the left hand in the first place is due to the buttons all being on the right half of the controller.

A left handed friend of mine uses his mouse with his right hand. A guy at work saw him doing both at the same time one day and was mightily impressed. Being able to navigate a computer, websites / email / etc, while you're taking notes with the other hand could be extremely useful. I too would like to work at being ambidextreous, but I find it rather frustrating at times.

If you're used to FPS games on consoles where the RIGHT stick is "look" and the LEFT stick is "move", you might be better off reversing the built in GT defaults. I've not tried it before, actually thought of it just now, but it might work!

Did I ever mention that GT3 and GT4 are the only video games I have? ;) It's okay though – I've gotten very good at using the left-hand-analogue-stick/right-hand-buttons setup. I'm very used to modulating the throttle/brakes with my thumb (made even easier with those snazzy graphical indicators in GT4).

I'd also love to be able to use a computer and handwrite something at the same time, but the one and only thing my left hand can do is put on my watch (yes, I put my watch on my right hand, even though I'm right-handed – nobody told me that was "wrong" when I started doing it, and I've tried, unsuccessfully, to break that habit).

It's your watch. Wear it where you want. Stick it up your but if you're so inclined. And don't let nobody tell you different! (:

Yeah, I tried dual thumbsticks before. Didn't go over well for me either. I use default like you. I even have a wheel, but I don't use it because I don't have anywhere good to set it up. It really begs for a racing cockpit and seat.
 
Um, it's a rather large watch. :lol:

My friend lent me his DFP once, but I couldn't find a place to mount it either – I tried a flimsy plastic table, and the Force Feedback nearly knocked the table over!

You might want to talk to Duke though – he's got a neat, inexpensive setup that might work for you.
