I saw Shannon refer to Nirvana's You Know You're Right as having the best bass line ever. While it's a great bass line, I've got to disagree. Anyway, his comment inspired me to make this topic.

Which song has the greatest bassline?

Some worthy mentions:

Radiohead - The National Anthem
Fugazi - Waiting Room
Pink Floyd - Money
Basically any Primus song
Beatles - Taxman

Inform me please.

I dont know if anyone here will remember this at all, its going back probably about 10 years now. EZ rollers had a song with a massive bassline - it was jungle-ish type music.

Bear with me now

It kind of went

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr br br br br br brrrr.
^^^^^
this one goes down in pitch gradually !!!

The Who - Can You See The Real Me - Enthwhistle's finest hour.

They Might Be Giants - Dirt Bike - Graham Maby is very melodic.

Joe Jackson - Friday and Sunday Papers - well, maybe his whole first album: again, Graham Maby's work.

Agreed on Primus. Les Claypool rocks on, particularly Groundhog Day and John The Fisherman. Also agreed on Flea - gotta love that 'funky-ass Flea bass', as the song goes.

Paul McCartney, anti-Christ though he may be, is actually an excellent bassist, when he can be bothered to put some feeling into it.

King Crimson - Elephant Talk or, oh heck, any Tony Levin-era stuff from Discipline,Three Of A Perfect Pair, or Beat.

Agreed.

My favourite bass line - Michael Anthony of Van Halen in Running With The Devil. Yes, the bass line may just be quarter notes, but the fact that it is so simple, and delivered so convincingly by Anthony is what makes it brilliant in my mind. A good bass line is supposed to drive a song, and that's exactly what Michael Anthony does here.

Honorable mentions go to John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin for Dazed and Confused, and Geddy Lee of Rush for Freewill.

Queen - Another one bites the dust is a good one.

I also like the bass line in (now don't flame me) ...Limp Bizkit- Take a look around (yes it's all I could think of) :sly:

I'm sure there's a few more, I just can't think of them right now :D

Just wanted to mention the song in my head that is also a perfect pick for this thread..."I feel free" / cream (eric clapton)

Awesome song, awesome bass line. 👍

Also a few others are coming to mind, but I don't have time to sit and think about what songs to mention.

So maybe I will be back later.

But in any case, you all have made some great picks above, so keep it up. ;)

The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army. Good for testing the woofer

Event Horizon
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army. Good for testing the woofer

My friend taught me how to play the bass line of that song. I even play it on my ukelele.:odd:

Just today I figured out that a guy in Nirvana, lead singer?, shot himself in the head with a shot gun.:dopey:

I suck.:grumpy:

Shannon
The White Stripes don't even have a bassist. :odd:

I think so, Shannon. I was taught Seven Nation Army on a bass.

EDIT:Shannon, i'm starting to get into metal bands.:) Especially Metallica. I like "Hate Nothing" but I can't find it.:odd:

EDIT2: Nevermind, it's "King Nothing".

The White Stripes certainly do not have a bassist. It's just a "low end guitar." Whatever the hell that is.

Alright I guess that clears things up. Crap then that means I haven't played it on the right instrument.:irked:

They're a two man (well, one's a chick) band. A drummer and a guitarist.

One of a new breed of back-to-basics rock acts to emerge from Detroit, Michigan, USA, the White Stripes comprises enigmatic bass-free duo Jack White (b. John Anthony Gillis, Detroit, Michigan, USA; guitar/vocals) and Meg White (b. Megan Martha White, Detroit, Michigan, USA; drums).

With that said, I can not stand The White Stripes. They're music (can it even be called that) is so simple it's rather annoying. My friend can play a White Stripes song (forgot which one) on the drums and guitar at the same time.

Maybe because there is no such song by Metallica. Well, as far as I know anyway.

Edit: Well that post was pointless. :grumpy:

Hey shannon can you give me some metal bands? not Death Metal just metal. Just give me the artist's name I'll do the rest.

I'll need to listen to some new music to find some better base lines but one that I know of right now is: Three Days Grace - Just Like You

No, they don't have a bassist - but Jack definitely played that riff on a bass. The reason most of their songs don't have a bass track is that they only use a 4-track cassette machine to do their recordings, and there's no room for it. But sometimes they add bass or piano instead of two guitar tracks.

Here are some more:

The Jam - Town Called Malice

Talking Heads - Psycho Killer - so simple anybody could play it, but very effective

Morphine - any song, but particularly Buena or Like Swimming

Brian Eno - Regiment - one of the best bass lines ever

Trent Reznor - Head Like A Hole (who cares if it's synth?) or Sanctified or Hey Pig (my fave)
