What is everyone's opinion on what the best platform is for a beginning -COMMON- car.
My choice is the 93-94 Ealge Talon, Plymouth Lazer, or Mitsubishi Eclipse. These cars come with a AWD drivetrain with the 4G63-T motor rated at 200 hp and turbocharged. Super common anywhere but the parts sometimes are a bit pricey.

The best more Common first car would easily be a late 90's Civic.

I agree with the above post from Blazin, but I would go with the EG Civic, from '92 - '95. Those things are great. Small little cars, but can accept any of the big B-series engines. An old DX hatch with a turbo'd B18 is a bad ass combo. I agree that the 1G DSMs are great cars to mod. But, for aftermarket support, nothing beats Honda. And, with a great small chassis that will accept the superb B-series engines, thats a hard combo to beat.

The 93-94 DSM? And why not the 90-92 models?
Because no one likes pop-up headlights   :D

Seriously though, I don't know anyone, myself included, that owned a 1GA DSM that didn't have a broken or jammed pop-up motor. I fixed one once, but when the other broke, I just unplugged the motors and let the headlights shine through the "faux" headlight in the bumper. Looked great then, and I didn't have to go all "One-Eyed-Willy" when it got dark.

Yeah. Tell me the difference in the VINs has more meaning than pop-up headlights...
Nope, cosmetic only for the most part. In '92 they changed to the non-popup headlights with the different bumpers front and rear. But, that was also the year that the 7-bolt engine was starting to phase in. Only about 1/2 of the '92 cars got the 7-bolt, so '93 is often considered the first year. Other than that, and some minor other changes related to the engine change, they are mechanically the same.
