CHRYSLER “VIPER” V-10

srt_10_eng.jpg

Based on the Chrysler's "LA"-series engines, the Big, Hiary-chested V-10 is the perfect Halo for Mopar

  • Dominated at Le Mans in GT2 for 5 years
  • the Latest versions sound FANTASTIC
  • Powers the world's fastest REAL pickup truck and a SCARY four-wheeled motorcycle
  • Hennessy version beat the DHL Lola champ car in the standing mile (Road and Track)
  • It's not everyone's cup of tea...which is good.

Nominations Criteria:
• ONE NOMINATION PER MEMBER. (including me)
• Must be 10 Cyl. Gasoline or Diesel engine
• May be race, street, Aircraft, Marine, whatever
• May be any configuration, except Radial.
• Try giving some good reasons.
• Engines/families are pretty much grouped by Manufacturers’ classifications, and by how interchangeable parts are. Wikipedia will be extensively used in these judgments.

Oh, and F1 engines count. ;)

Current Nominees
BMW S85 V-10 (M5, M6)
Chrysler "Viper" V-10
Ford "Triton" 6.8L V-10
Peugeot SA35-A1 V-10 (Peugeot 905 LMP)
Porsche Carrera GT 5.7L V-10
Renault RS-25 V-10 (Renault F1 '05)
VAG TDI 5.0L Diesel V-10 (Touareg)
VAG "Lambo" V-10 (Audi RS6, Gallardo)

The vote is in and it's the Rover V8 that has it. As for nominating a V10 I'm not sure what I would call the best one at this point in time, the Dodge V10 is certainly one with plenty of credentials with a good history of use in G racing as well as the Viper road cars and it's appeared in trucks as well. I'll have to have a think about what would be the best though becasue there's quite a few but not that many that are used in more than one or two models.

VW V10 diesel from the Tourag and Pheaton.

Second choice would be a toss-up between the BMW petrol V10 from the M5/6 and the V10 Gallardo engine.

I nominate the 5.0L V10 (S85) from the current M5 and M6 since someone already beat me to the Carrera GT V10. I'm voting for that Carrera GT V10, it's one of the best noises ever in the history of automobiles.

i support your vote on the Viper V10, such a great engine 👍

i think it will be a neat fight between Viper V10 and VW V10.......

viper

Well, if F1 engines count... How about Renaults' (was it them?) 21,000 RPM monstrosity.

Now they are, for the last few years they've been V10's, over the years F1 has seen everything from inline 4's to V12's.

and those BRM....H-24s, were they? All I know is they had some wonky layout and an insane amount of cylinders...

you cant go wrong with the porsche V10. or the VAG V10 diesel.

the viper V10 is an anvil by comparison.

voted BMW for V8. it was close between that and the hemi. the BMW only won out due to my knowledge of a certain tuners ability to unleash unholy power from that same engine with only bolt on parts
yes i know the same can be said of the chrysler. sue me.

My pick would be the 5.2 liter version of Lambo V10 in the Audi RS6. Fittingly my 500th post.

Uhm, does that engine share enough parts to be a seperate engine, or should it be lumped with the Gallardo mill?

They are different engines really - but i guess they are similar enough 👍

It is essentially a bored out version of the Lamborghini engine. If there was a trouble over the different generation of Chevy small blocks in the previous thread, 5.2 and 5.0 sure as hell shouldn't be held seperately. It would be like calling the Gen. 1 Viper motor a different engine than the Gen. 2 motor.

Audi R10 LeMans race car diesel V10. The first ever diesel to win LeMans. Plus it smoked loads of Petrol cars in the process!!!!! :sly:

thats because they all thought the Engine would suck. but it didn't! it kept up, sounded mental and just ran forever! well see next year when the rules are ammended and the new Peugot 908 is involved. (thats another Diesel powerd car)

On the Lambos....Got it.

On the Audi: Guess no-one thought anyone could make a lightweight, aluminum, reliable race car diesel. There was the Cummins Special of '50s Indy racing, but that didn't go over so well.

Only problem with that is that it's a V12. :dunce:

Audi
The new Audi R10 TDI is powered by a completely new 5.5-litre, twelve-cylinder bi-turbo TDI engine which is extremely economical and quiet.

Interestingly, Taurus Motorsport entered Le Mans with a V10 diesel a few years ago. Although badged Caterpillar, it was so heavily based on the Touareg lump that several Touaregs could be seen sans engine outside the Taurus's shop. It was fitted to an ancient Lola chassis, and wasn't very fast. It also kept breaking down.

BAH!!!! I'll save that nomination for the next thread...though itt'll have to compete against a pretty heavy hitter I have planned....
