Okay, we're ending the last thread a bit early due to the pretty wide spread of votes, and I want to try to keep interest up. So, first things first, we need to make the final votes for the 'Best Compact Car' thread, which came down to:
Volkswagen Golf/Rabbit
Mazda3
Honda Civic
Ford Focus (MKII)
So please vote, I'll keep the polls open for three days, but this is where we focus on the next category:
So, the rules are fairly similar as to what they were last time. Nominate ONE new Family-sized car (Think Ford Mondeo, Saturn Aura/Vauxhall Vectra, Honda Accord, etc) that has been built MY06+.
Keep in mind that we're nominating BASIC models, not specific ones. So, although you may want to give the nod to VW Passat 3.6 4MOTION, you would only need to nominate the VW Passat in general...
So are we ready? Lets do it... You've got three-ish days...
---
So is it really any surprise as to what I would nominate? I mean, I've been going crazy over this car for almost a year now, and it still has surprised me every time I see one... No, its not the Ford Mondeo, its the Saturn Aura (and I guess that includes the Vectra too).
What it comes down to is that GM took the class-leading design of the Vectra from Europe, sat it on an extended version of the Epsilon chassis, packed it full of other goodies for a great price, and altogether has created a game-changer with the American mid-size class.
For not much more than $22K USD, you can get yourself into a basic top-level XR that includes the 3.6L 252 BHP V6 and a six-speed automatic, but fully-loaded, you would be hard-pressed to find the car for more than $30,000. At least for me, the sweet-spot will be the 2008 XE with the 2.4L ECOTEC and the 6-speed automatic, as it combines the best that GM has for fuel efficiency outside of the GreenLine (hybrid) model.
Simply put, these cars are screwed together exceptionally well, look stunning, and can perform amongst the best of the best when it comes to this crucial car class worldwide. We (as Americans) owe it all to the Germans over at Opel for making this car so great, and thereby, letting us make it better.
