Its been fun, and although the debate has been somewhat limited, we do have a good group of nominees here, so it will be interesting to see what forms of the top-five, or otherwise dominates the voting overall.

The list:

- Audi A4
- BMW 318i (Europe)
- Chevrolet Impala
- Citroen C5 (Europe)
- Dodge Charger SXT (US)
- Ford Fusion SEL V6 (US)
- Ford Mondeo (Europe)
- Honda Accord (US)
- Holden Commodore SV6 (Australia)
- Hyundai Azera (US)
- Hyundai Sonata
- Jaguar X-Type (Europe)
- Mazda 3
- Skoda Octavia Elegance (Europe)
- Subaru Legacy 2.5GT
- Toyota Camry
- Volkswagen Jetta GLI

...Now remember we are looking for the "best" model here, so depending on what you value as the "best" qualities, your choice may be different. IMO, we should be looking for the greatest value here, including decent fuel efficiency, a high "fun to drive" factor, and overall isn't a car you would be embarrassed to drive.

---

I myself have seen the light of the Commodore, as I really hadn't thought about the car and the fact that we will be seeing it here VERY soon. The good pricing levels just shy of $30K USD prices it well in the market, and given that it includes the rather lovely 3.6L "High Feature" LY7 V6, it makes it all the more better. Sure, its a big car (I like big cars) and fuel economy isn't class leading, but the compromises of the car are slim to none. The look is aggressive, the handling is excellent for a car that size, and offers more than enough fun to the family man who needs some "time off" for himself before picking up the kids or going to work.

...Sure, I'd love to have a V8, but the V6 will do fine. Big size and big power won me over in this situation. Don't get me wrong, the GLI is by-far the "realistic" favorite at the moment, given that the Commodore isn't yet sold in the US, but when that change-over happens, you can bet that the next-gen Impala or G8 will always be high on my list of sedans.

---

EDIT:

BTW folks, you've got three days to vote in this one... Feel free to debate, as that is where the fun is!

come on its the audi, you all know it makes sense

Why the Audi? You can have a more powerful, less expensive, more reliable, more roomy, AND a V-6 in a Acura TL for much less than the A4.

Otherwise your right. :D

Acuras are basically re-badged Hondas with some adjustments. i went Skoda because their name means more than it used to, the car is VERY comfortable, you can go to Scotland from East Anglia and not get back ache (my mum recently did this) and 65 mpg a good 👍 it does flick up to 123.7 mpg briefly before settling at around 65-90 mpg. the Scotland run was on 1 tank of fuel and the needle had just gone into the red.

I'm more tempted to go for the Mondeo tbh, sure it's not the most exciting car there but in terms of value for money and ride quality there very little wrong with the Mondeo.

Went with Mondeo, a friemd had a top of the range 2l model as a courtesy car for a few weeks, real nice ride and when he planted his foot it moved pretty well. Really nice comfy interior as well.

Im hoping the Octavia does well, brilliant cars.

I went with the Mondeo as well. It's had a pretty long production run and it's at a point nowadays where the car practically sells itself. The engines are pretty varied, but even the 1.8 litre one, albeit a bit underpowered, has good response when demanded, despite its sluggish shape. But even with that, it's very manouverable... I've fit the car in many space I thought it wouldn't. It has also won many awards, I believe, including car of the year.

Regarding other stuff, I believe there are many cars missing in the list. Was there a preliminary thread regarding the cars or did you put this one together, Yssman?

I'm talking about the Renault Laguna, Opel Vectra, Peugeot 406, Volkswagen Passat, Toyota Avensis, Nissan Primera and the Mazda 6.

Had you done this 6 months earlier, you could of had the VZ SV8 for 40,490 (~31,000USD) with an Auto (The manual was even cheaper).

With the Gen III and 250kw (335hp). It was the performance bargin.

A few things:

1) I'm happy to see that people finally began to vote here. I was a little worried earlier today as even the nomination thread was still going on, but nothing more to complain about here.

As L4S pointed out, there was a preliminary thread where I gave a bit of time for nomination. I like to keep things moving, usually on a three to four day basis (in this case, three days to decide the final few nominees) before moving on again. Also the nominations are limited to only one per person, so while your list of "missing" cars certainly do include some that would have a chance, I've learned from previous attempts during the origional "Best Car; World Ed." setup, having too many models only makes things complicated.

On a few of your nominations there, the only ones I could really see having a realistic chance are the Mazda 6 and Volkswagen Passat. But (and I don't know if you know this) the Ford Fusion actually is a Mazda 6 with a blue-oval on the hood, and the Passat while certainly welcome, was undercut by the Jetta GLI (oops on my behalf) in this situation.

3) On the Mondeo:

I would certainly be more apt to voting for the Mondeo if I was able to see more of the car on a consistent basis. The last time we had a Mondeo on sale in America was 2000 (or was it 2002 with the Mercury version?), so it has been a while. The current model looks great, and as I understand it, it is a great car. But if the next-gen model was on-sale, I could honestly say the car could take the spotlight away from the Commodore as "most wanted" based on looks alone.

The 6 month old VZ II SV8 had the L76 Gen IV 6.0L (260kw's, 348hp), the Gen III LS1 was phased out with the VZ I.

BTW thats a VY SV8 in your link.

i can see your point with the mondeo, i get drive one on a regular basis and its a great car, my g/fs dad has a '04 tdci ghia and its really comfortable, and for a diesel it goes really well, well enough to scare the g/f and her mum haha, but the audi still has my vote sorry (not that i can change it lol)

Thanks for that. Since I strarted my new job I've been loggin on less and less, so I'm missing out many threads. Still, it's good to know there was a pre-nomination thread.

Wasn't the Ford Contour the same as the Mondeo? I remember some frineds in college had a Contour SVT (and a rich dad) and they kept saying it was the equivalent to the Mondeo ST220. Funnily enough, the Mondeo is among the largest current family cars in Europe, while the Contour in the US was a mid-size sedan.

I saw a Ford Excursion here last week. :dopey:

Yep, I'm going for the Mondeo as well. It's fairly cheap, roomy, reliable enough for most people, drives well and is comfortable. What else more would you want? :)

I'm gagging at some of the nominations up there.

The Mondeo is a good car 👍 - i've just run my 3rd first generation Mondeo into the ground. Apart from the usual consumables, tyres, clutches etc i've had to replace next to nothing and servicing costs are very low too. The 1st gens are starting to really look their age so i'm glad i'm moving onto something a bit more recent looking. Fugly but recent looking :sly:

I've taken mine to be repaired this week (some idiot rear-ended me), and today I dropped by to ask when it should be ready. It's at the Ford dealer, so they had the new Mondeos... oh man, I actually drooled.

What, the MkIII Mondeo? - i didn't know it was out yet.

Well, I love the Monaro/nuGTO, and came very close to buying one. The only thing that prevented me was my daily need for 4 doors. So I voted for the Commodore, even though I don't have any experience with it specifically.

I will say that both my wife's TSX and my 325i work very well as fun family sedans, though the 325i is a bit small for a family that doesn't have access to something larger when needed.

Yep the current Mondeo is the MKIII, the newest one that's just coming out and was in the new Bond film is the MKIV.

where have you been hidding the last 6 years, it was released in 2000

Yep the current Mondeo is the MKIII, the newest one that's just coming out and was in the new Bond film is the MKIV.

Didn't realise they classed this as the MkII, It's little more than a face lifted MkI.

It was indeed the Mk III, mebbe the last one of that generation, me thinks. The 2006 model it was.

I voted the Camry... Was torn between that and the Legacy. Reason for the Camry is the cheaper base price and the better fuel economy.

Those kinda things really matter to most people buying a family car.

...To me the Camry has been completely ruined by its own success. It simply isn't the "average" car it supposed to be, this new model being far too odd for my tastes. My Mother bought a brand-new Camry in '95 and she still drives it today, and IMO, they were some of the last great Camry models, as the past two generations were far too large and far too "loopy" to make any kind of sense.

The car, simply put, feels cheap. It doesn't drive pleasantly either, nothing to get excited about. Sure, there are some neat tricks the car can do, but the Europeans have been able to do it for years, so nothing too special there.
