Series Premiere: Entry Level Sport Cars

Hello again from MOTORTRENDmitch, as some of you may know my team and I do bi-weekly reviews called Stock -vs- Tuned. That has went very well so far, but I feel the concept will get old fairly quickly. That's what this is for, in Best in Class we will put a group of cars together, all within the came class, and compare them thoroughly. We will do all available tests, lap times, and reviews on each car in the group. We will get video coverage on this, done by the same YouTube channel that will soon be covering Stock vs Tuned, so be sure to subscribe to them so you don't miss a Beat.
Please give some suggestions on what cars, or car class, to make a mass comparison on. It will happen. This concept it much like what a real car magazine will do, obtain a group of cars such as Modern Muscle Cars, and pit them against eachother to find which of the cars really are the best. Everything will be taken into consideration when we pick the winner including: Performance, Handling, Price, Looks, and last but not least (and my personal favourite, the Fun-o-Meter. Be sure to check back for details and don't forget to give suggestions!

I have a suggestion. For starters, I would like you to cover Class-A Japanese sports cars, which are loved by everybody :). That class would include Japanese sports cars that are limited to 275hp such as:

Honda NSX Type R '02
Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 V-spec II Nur
Toyota Supra RZ
Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type A
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V GSR (or whichever Evo is approrpiate)
Subaru Impreza WRX STi (sedan or wagon, whichever Impreza is appropriate)

and so on and so forth... :D

one more note: You should only test the showroom factory version of the car models, no tuner cars :)

OR...

if you want to drive cars that are a bit faster, you could always try supercars. In this list, I find the cars here should be able to match other, one way or another

Nissan GT-R R35 '07
Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C6
Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4
Dodge Viper SRT/10 Coupe '06
Shelby Cobra 427 S/C
Ferrari 430 Scuderia
Audi R8 5.2 V10 FSI Quattro
Aston Martin V12 Vantage '10
Ferrari F40
Ruf CTR Yellowbird
Lexus LFA
Cizeta V16T
Pagani Zonda C12S
Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG (R230)

there are certainly more that can be added, I arranged the cars myself in my Favorites list . I'm gonna have to go through the Master Car List thoroughly :)

Yeah, thanks for the suggestions! I have been thinking of different super car match-ups.. Such as keeping cars like the 599 & the LP670, away from the Entry level supercar class such as Z06, 458, Gallardo etc. Mostly because they aren't for the same thing. Also, the Enzo, Aventador, F1 and S7 will be kept away from the others as well.. Expect many great Episodes! I can't wait to do them.

Edit: I forgot to add this in, Cars like the Astons, the California, the Maserati, the Alfa 8C, etc, will be in their own class mostly because they aren't track cars what so ever.

I think I can sort out these cars that you are ruling out. :)

don't forget the Jaguar XKR in the New Dealerships. 👍

What if testing which cars are best in certain price category. Fastest tradeables, fastest 100k Cr. Fastest below 10k Cr cars.

Sorry for not being able to come last night. My drift comp didn't get over till 9:30 my time (CST)

Let me know next time and I'll try to help out 👍

We have been racing a one make series for over a month. The races are for 500,600, and 650 PP cars. What's different is I allow any car from any year such as Vette, Ford GT, Camaro, etc. the 650 cars are the racing versions.

The races are about 40 miles with tire wear and penalties. The results are interesting. Neither premium nor standards are dominating.

We all end up with a large selection of nicely tuned cars. it's great fun.

In the next 2 days we will begin testing and what not of the 1st episodes cars, I'm leaning toward some Super cars, or entry level sport cars.. Put in some suggestions :)

You didn't miss much. :P

Ok, so we think we ave chosen our 1st Best in Class test, and it will be Entry level supercars.

List might include: Ford GT, Audi R8 5.2, Corvette Z06, McLaren MP4-12C, Viper Coupe, SLS AMG, 458 Italia, Lamborghini Gallardo, and possibly more.

If we don't chose this class we might go for entry level sport cars Such as S2000, STi, Evo, Miata/MX-5, and more.

Testing will begin tonight!

If this is a 600PP list, I'd add the Nissan GT-R Spec V 09', GT Academy version etc. to the list. And it's tough to beat the Volkswagen Nardo on a twisty track. The McLaren F1 is also in the mix on a twisty track.

As mac said, they will all be stock,
The Nardo and McLaren F1 are on different levels then these, those would be in a class with that of the Enzo, Murcielago SV, SLR Mclaren, etc. However we will probably add the GT-R and LFA to the list of the supercars

Will this always be PP determined or is power/ weight relation considered too?

One nice set would be BMW M5, Mercedes E AMG and Jaguar XFR. Big and powerful.

we aren't exactly going by PP just by car class.
& yeah that would be pretty fun

Since a Jaguar XFR is the newest Ring Taxi, sounded like a good idea.

Also, some European hatches would be fun. VW Golf, Ford Focus, Volvo C30, Alfa 147, BMW 120, Audi A3.

Or Japanese convertibles, with Honda S2000, Mazda Miata, Nissan 350Z Convertible and Toyota MR2 (this sounds horrible in French).

Anyway, very nice idea mate!

The Ford GT, McLaren MP4-12C and 458 Italia are in a league of their own compared to the others. Pitting them against it would make absolute mincemeat of the latter. The McLaren is just too powerful, it feels like it has 6-10 PP more than stated.:crazy:

The GT-R and the LFA would make great additions to the match-up. For choosing which GT-R though, I suggest the Spec-V, the Black Edition would be overkill as well, like the McLaren. :dopey:

Classic Supercars like AC/Shelby Cobra, Ferrarri 512BB, Lamborghini Contouch 25th anniversary, RUF Yellowbird. Might be a couple others as well...:D
