So, I'm playing GT4 in musical silence, because engines are more musical than most of the crap they put on here.

But I remember back in the day, games had to work at their music - music was part of the game experience itself. It could add to tension, or encourage you to just drop off that ledge you thought you were on, and was NEVER EVER EVER just some cheap-ass marketing ploy to put some current-favourite band into your computer.

So, what were/are the best pieces of in-game music ever? Not "what tracks do you like to listen to while playing "X" and, oh! They happen to be on the game's predetermined playlist", but pieces written FOR the game, during the game. No themes either. During play or not at all.

My top two are The Settlers (Amiga) and the all time #1...

Chuck Rock (if you can get hold of a copy, or emulator version, it's a must).

Go!

Metal Gear Solid games also had a very good soundtrack, MGS3 probably the best out of the series.

If I remember correctly Call of Duty had a very epic soundtrack too.

The suffering has a good creepy soundtrack as well, fits the style of the game and definitely adds to the overall feeling in the game.

I was going to mention the GTA series , especially San Andreas, but those were all existing songs... but they aren't picked because of their popularity, more to fit in the game. I don't think you meant this type of soundtrack though.

Music in games before the Playstation came out has always been crappy to me though. Whenever my parents hear the Super Mario melody they start shivering again because they had to hear it way too often.

IIRC, There was a "remixed" version of Blood Money for the Amiga.. Words spoken over some insanely cool techno kinda sound... That's all that actually springs to mind..

"Now the biggest unanswered question is 'Where is the money'"... <-- add cool techno...

And probably Alley Cat on the C64..

And what was the name of that guy that made the maddest C64 game music ?.. Ron or Rob Something ?...

Chrono Trigger for SNES. And Chrono Cross for the PS.

Two picks that came to my mind that I liked..

The Silent Hill 3 soundtrack.Makes me feel happy.not.

NFSU2

I don't dislike any of the songs, and I quite like a few of them. Especially Spiderbait's version of 'Black Betty'. Snoop's 'Riders on the Storm' isn't too bad either.

Like I said, I wouldn't say I love all the songs, but I don't dislike any of them, and that's a first.

As for games like MGS and Silent Hill etc, these games do have good sound tracks, but I was thinkin' more along the lines of songs, rather than a musical score - although with orchestral music written and played to reflect the on screen happenings (a la MGS2) then how can they go wrong?... :)

Little Big Adventure (also known as Relentless)
The score to this brilliant French game is so very memorable.

Rob Hubbard, who made most of the awesome C64 musicc, like wizball.

I don't understand why so many people hate the Gt4 soundtrack, it's got a wide selection of genres and most of it pretty much suits the game. I suppose you can't cater to everyones tastes.

Unfortunately all the original composition tracks in GT4 get removed for the English release. The tracks are done by Masahiro Andoh and i'm sure take heavy influence from people like Joe Satriani. Oh and they are awesome, if you like that kind of thing. Also the tracks by Daiki kasho are composed for the game and so is the menu music which is also awesome in it's own way.

In most modern games you won't find a soundtrack composed purely for the game because it's allot easier nowadays to get a bunch of licenced tracks. In some cases this is ok, I mean there isn't much point in composing your own tracks for a football game or a racing game. As long as it fits the game, well Burnout 3 is a prime example of the sountrack not fitting the game. Games like Wipeout and the GT series have always been good at managing to use licenced soundtracks well, well with a few self composed tracks.

Any game that is plot driven should have a composed soundtrack of some sorts.

At the moment my favorite VG music is from Everyone Loves Katamari (which is Katamari Damacy 2), the music is very catchy and suits the game down to the ground.

I've got allot of Amiga mod files on my pc as well, I think my Favorites would have to be Cannon Fodder and Xenon 2 which was actually a bomb the bass track.

I've got a version of the Chuck rock music done by an actual band, let me see if I can put it up somewhere.

Oh please do! It was teh awesomes - especially with the animation of the badn playing it at the start.

Tetris ^_^ The song never gets old!

Except when someone tried to make a pop record out of it. Then it got REALLY old, REALLY quick.

I have Rare Hero, Rare Hero 2000, and then the Remix from Revolution on my playlist.

I ripped Ridge Racer Revolution's music myself, it was the first PS1 game I ever ripped songs from.

I downloaded all of Ridge Racers music.

As the series got older, the music got worse. Rage Racer wasn't bad, R4 had like Laid back Jazz music, and V's music just sucked.

I've got them all the rare hero tracks on Mp3 on a cd somewhere, but I lost R4 and RRR with the rest of my old PS1 games. The only good song on R4 was the intro music, I hated that damn game anyway god it pissed me off.

Rage racer had some nice tracks, I remember Volcano Vehicle was probably the best one.

Edit: I don't know where i can make the file available. Anyone got any idea where I can put it?

The Medal Of Honor series has always has great in-game music. (and sound for that matter) Nothing suits World War II better than its soundtrack. 👍

Rapidshare, as much as I hate it.

Edit: There WAS one good song in R4...

Eat 'Em Up. The Pac-Man car song. That was catchy.

Oh, come on.

Quake I, hands down. Entire musical score and a lot of the sfx by Doom fan Trent Reznor. Best soundtrack evAr. Not to mention that the ammo crates for the nail gun had Nine Inch Nails logos on them.
👍
Close runner up would have to be Stewart Copeland's scores for the Spyro The Dragon series. Great jazzy, funky, goofy stuff.

Honorable mention goes to Jak & Daxter the original. Though Tak & the Power of JuJu isn't bad in a Starbuck's-Rainforest-CD sort of way.

It keeps timing out.

Nevermind i've got it hosted.

I don't think I was that good to get the Pac-Man car, mainly because you had to do something incredibly tedious, like go through the game eleventybillion times and not loose ever and I didn't have the patience with the damn game. That game was not very fun.

You didn't miss much by not getting the car. It was Pac Man, On wheels.

I forgot what I did to get it.

What was sick were the fancy cars from Rage Racer. The rocket car and such. THOSE were cool.

I remember the Rocket car from R4, also there was a hover car and some little car that had one gear but you never needed to slow down ever.

Oh hold on, I can remember a batmobile like car in rage racer and some sort of crazy hot rod type thing. I think they were realy expensive though.

Nice - too busy though. The original was just 5 instruments, a maximum of four at a time.

Still, I was nodding :D

Maybe it was R4 that had the rocket car.

I don't damn remember.

Anway, we're way off topic. This is not the Ridge Racer thread :)

PIPE DREAMS. That had that one song. That good song that I turned into a guitar solo in Fruity Loops, and challenged everyone I knew that played guitar to play it. And they can't.

Eh that was because of the limitations of the Amiga sound chip and it only being able to have polyphony of 4. Well in MED (and other tracker programs) you only had 4 channels to put samples/notes into, although they found a software workaround for that.

You can still play modfiles in winamp or foobar, although I find winamp has better support for it.

Cannon fodders awesome intro music with lyrics.

Lotus Turbo Challenge, oh man all those games had awesome music.

Speedball 2

And in English that's...?
