I want to hear nominations for the best movie villains of all time.

My nomination? Darth Vader. Why?

Darth had everything - troubled childhood, skilled swordsman (of a kind) and gifted pilot, sharp wit (some priceless one liners), physically imposing presence and voice, utterly ruthless, happy to go back on agreements and screw people over, uses people as pawns in his bigger game - and, to top it off - he gets redemption in the end.

Let's hear your nominations and reasons.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the name of the thread :cheers:

Alan Rickman in Die Hard.
He goes to all that trouble for a robbery, Gets dumped of the top of a very tall building, and his brother shows up in the third movie with a revenge motive to cover an even bigger robbery.

My first thought was Darth Vader. For the same reasons.

My second place goes to the Shark in Jaws. A creature often feared, and worshipped. It becomes of Mythical proportions, unstoppable power, and unrelenting terror. Simple terror unleashed.

Third place would go to the Terminator in the first movie. An unstoppable machine bent on fulfilling it mission at all costs.

I'll second Darth and the Terminator. The Shark is an interesting addition, as well. Here are some short takes of my own.

Dennis Hopper's character (sorry, don't know the name) in Blue Velvet: totally brutal, totally unpredictable, yet very intelligent and with an incredible seductive ability.

The Six-fingered Man in The Princess Bride: Intelligent, arrogant, an excellent swordsman, thoroughly evil - and he's exposed as the true coward he is by ice-cold bluffing by the hero.
Hrm. I can probably think of more.

I'd like to offer up a slight correction.

The six fingered man was killed by Enigo Montoya, not by the hero (Wesley/Dred Pirate Roberts). And it was in a swordfight shortly after Enigo had been stabbed in each sholder.

The Antgonist (Prince Humperdink) was defeated by the hero's bluffing.

"No, not to the death, but rather to the pain..."

"Never bet with a Sicilian, especially when life is on the line"

A classic movie, that my wife and I love.

Ah, but I didn't say he was killed by the hero. Just exposed as a coward.
:smilewink
In my faulty recollection, it was Six Fingers who ran away from the confrontation with Wesley, and then was killed by Inigo Montoya. My mistake.

Excellent thread :)

Darth, the shark from Jaws, Alan Rickman in Diehard were the first to come to mind for me as well.

In the princess Bride, the 6 fringered man runs from Inigo when he declares "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya...." for the first time. Then he chases him. His only run in with Wesley was in the fire swamps, and then in the dungeon where he mostly kills Wesley.

I'm adding The Alien, Predator, Kahn from Star trek 2, Wes Studi (Magua) from Last of the Mohicans.

Hannibal Lector......., too bad he was so likeable. :D

BTW - yes Darth is right up there as well...

D. Vader is a true baddie. But check the dude pulling his strings. The Emperor was a pretty scary dude as well.
I admit to forgetting about Khan *slaps side of head, says Doh!*
Also, Count Allomar from "A Knight's Tale"
"You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting" Great line.

The Emperor is pretty impressive, and I suspect Episode III might put him over the top as the biggest villain of all time.

Khan was a great villain - just freaky seeing Ricardo Montelban (sp?) in that muscle suit, though.

Hahahahah my mates and I got thrown out of the theatre for yelling "The plane! The PLANE!" during the starship battle scene...

Why don't you post a poll Vat_man?

(Vader gets my vote though)
He is head and shoulders above the rest.

Nearly every kid (and adult) on this planet knows him.
And if they don't know him by name, but see his picture, they'll probably say: Oh! THAT guy!

Palpatine is very cool though, I remember this line in Episode 2:
"I will not let this republic be spilt in two."
So awesome, when you know he is pulling the strings...

Well, I was thinking about doing that once I get a few nominations - might do that later today - I am at work, you know....:)

Hannibal Lector get my vote as well. I loved Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal wasn;t to bad.

Also most Bond villians are pretty cool as well

and we can't forget Dr.Evil

Nominations, eh??

Let me see what i can come up with...

I don't know if he can be considered a 'villain' but Jason Vorhees from the Friday the 13th movies is one heck of a bad guy..

And then all these guys are sure to follow:
Michael Myers
Freddy Krueger
Leatherface

an outsider:

T1000 from Terminator 2

You decide...

My suggestions:

Gary Oldman's psychotic bent DEA officer in Leon.
Donald Sutherland as the "bomb a village to save his own ass" General in Outbreak

Exactly how I was thinking. I think Jaws in the bond movies is great.
I also think that the Green Goblin in Spider-Man is a good villain too.

Sorry mate, have to disagree on that one. Camp ham comedy. Which served its purpose in the movie, but he wasn't scary!

definatly agree with D.V. and Gary Oldman in Leon is wicked- one of my all time favourite films :D

what about the old classic bad guy.........Count Dracular!?

Building on Bird2Rock's thoughts, I do have to say that Gary Oldman plays a great Villian.

Fifth Element; Dracula; Air Force One; Lost in Space (well...); and the Professional (Leon).

Its all about Darth Vader. He is the ulitmate villian. I wouldnt consider Hannibal a villian. He's too nice. Too refined. He's not even evil. He has fairly good reasons for what he does....I believe..... *munch*

My all time favourite one-liner is in that film. That great scene where Roy Scheider is dropping fish bait into the ocean, and while his head's turned, the shark appears, calmly feeding on the bait.

Scheider turns back, sees the shark, and his cigarette drops out of his open mouth. He rushes back to the cabin and breathlessly announces 'we're gonna need a bigger boat!'. I love that line.

I think Tom McDonnell has that as his favorite quote.

Or did at one point...

Yes. a classic line.
