Best Old School Game Music

Ok, I'm talking pre playstation days here. I'm thinking the top are

1. Megaman 2 - Simple, but perfect for what it was
2. Super Metroid - One of the few soundtracks that could really work your emotions in an action game.
3. Zelda - Just because it was Zelda, heh heh
4. Gunstar Heroes - Best 2 player shooter of all time had great music as well.
5 Castlevania Series - Just good stuff all around.

Just the original. . . It is one of those songs that you can get stuck in your head for days unless you actually play the game. If you are musically inclined too, you can put a pretty dope beat to it and jam out all day : )

That much is true. I have a few SMB remixes. Of course I think the Megaman OC remixes are the best. And the the airman one the best of those.

Chrono Trigger and FF3(6) had some great music, but for the time Starfox had the best music by a good margin.

Wild Arms series - very original western style music
Tales of / Star Ocean series - nice and touchy
Ridge Racer series - only racing game where i don't turn game music off

E-Swat - especially that 1st helicopter boss theme
Streets of Rage - what a killer soundtrack...
Second Samurai - stylish and good
Shinobi - Idaten!
Mick & Mack: Global Gladiators - ya!
Dune: the Battle for Arrakis - nice appropriate sounding music
OutRun - Magical Shower ^_^
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - 2 player battle music

New Ghostbusters II - i believe it was that 2nd level theme that i much liked
Astayanax - ya!
Contra - ownage nes soundtrack!
Mighty Final Fight - amazing music
Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers series - aww

Kaniyodrift: I have to agree with you about the music for the Ridge racer series. Except for Wipeout XL, all the other racing game music pretty much blows!
