Hi guys,

I am currently using a 32" LG HD TV.

It has the following connections:

DVI - SCART - S-VIDEO and COMPONANT (720P & 1080i)

What is the best possible setup I can get with this TV? Currently I am using a HDMI to DVI cable and the PS3 is set to 1080i.

Also, in theory what is the best setup to use with a PS3? HDMI 1080i (P) ??

Thanks.

HDMI to DVI at 1080p.

What is the native resolution of your display? If 1080p isn't available, whether 1080i or 720p is better depends on several factors, such as how good deinterlacer and scaler your display has.

It's worth a try for sure, but 720p may look cleaner and more fluent, because it doesn't need to be deinterlaced, which is something flatscreens never are very happy with.

When my old samsung could only do 720p/1080i i always used 720p - it always looked cleaner

Again, it all depends how good the deinterlacer chip in the display is compared to the scaler chip. The problem with both is that good quality chips are generally only found in the more expensive models. For scaling, it's always better to have more information to start with. For example, if your display's native resolution is 1366x768 which is fairly common in mid sized LCDs, it's better to scale 1080->768 than 720->768. Whether it's 1080i or 720p that actually looks better is not so simple, if the display's deinterlacer is bad, most likely 720p will still look better, but you should try both and use whichever looks better.

If you have a native 720p display, feeding it 720p material is of course the obvious choice since there's no processing required.

but it looked a little different than your avatar...:)lol.

Jesus i just read this and i never for 1 second took the TV's spec into consideration when talking about HD. i just always thought bigger is best and 1080 HD is the way forward. end of!

Can anyone explain the difference in summary between a LCD and plazma flat screen tv? im stumped on this one for ages!

also, this is the TV i have for gaming and i have it set to 1080 HD at the moment. shud it be kept at 1080 from experience?

OK thanks guys.

I will find out the model number of my TV, find the details are report back.

In regards to the output, I am using a HDMI to DVI cable. Would using the componant cables be better at all, as I am not using true HDMI?

No, as the DVI/HDMI cable does not convert the signals, it just uses a different plug. This is as good as it's going to get, component won't be better, likely even worse.

In short, no. The digital video signals in DVI and HDMI are identical as Interceptor pointed out. HDMI is actually a superset of DVI, the main difference being it also includes audio.

Component is an analog medium, which means the signal goes through an extra D/A and A/D conversions before reaching your screen. While there are some exceptions, generally it's safe to assume HDMI/DVI will have better quality than component.
