I managed to scrape $350,000 together (specifically, $351,500). I decided that it's time to start the Rally section. So, which rally car is the best buy under $350,000?

Citroen Xsara Rally Car
Ford Focus Rally Car
Peugot 206 Rally Car
Subaru Impreza Rally Car
Toyota Corolla Rally Car

Thank you for your opinions!! :)

That's a hard question to answer sort of.

Can you buy an Impreza rally at the dealer?
I don't think you can, maybe though.

If you can, the impreza is best.

Thing is, except for the impreza and focus, all of those cars are very, very equal.

Good luck, good question, but I have gotta ask...
Did you do a search before posting this?
Be honest. ;)

Later. :D

In my opinion, I wouldn't go buy a rally car since you are going to win them all anyway when you do rally.

Take a standard evolution or subaru to that dance buddy (you don't even have to buy them as you can win them all over the place in beginner or amateur).

Go spend a 100k on it decking it out with the nicest dress you can buy at the parts shop with some dirt tires and go kick butt in rally. Plus, you end up with a pretty quick car you can use at other places. Like, for example, you could take one of the evolutions to the amateur evo meeting, run three races and walk away with the Evo Rally Car you can win there.

Worst case scenario, you spend a few bucks on parts...

No. :D I thought that all of the threads would be talking about the Escudo anyway, so why waste life?

Come to think of it, just dirt tires, a turbo, racing tranny, and full suspension on one of those will get you a win at one of the Rally Series and then you have your rally car. Probably could do it for less than 50-60k.

Excellent advice about what to do in the game. 👍
I guess I should have thought more like that, and less like an xport using olr racer. :D

btw, if you do go with a "normal car" and spend the money to fix it up, I would go with the evo t.m.e.
Nice one there, but some people like the newest versions of the evo... personally, I am indifferent, especially since I think of the evo5 as one of the best looking since it has the boxy, symetrical front fascia.

Truth be told, ever since I got my sharkport, I think like you do too. It is so much easier... My kid just happened to ask me darn near the same question recently for his game.

Getting all gold in the Rally License gives you a Imprezza Rally car. If you dont feel you can achieve this follow Phattboys advice.
In my first game I left the rally until late on in the game. I used the Imprezza LM car that time around. Great fun.

   I did the rally with the Imprezza LM car once too! And you are right... it was GREAT FUN!!! It wasn't any fun for the AI as they were like running in a different race but it was a blast seeing just how fast I could get around the tracks! 👍

Okay, I'm running my prized Dandelion Yellow Evo 4 that I won from the Beginner's Evo Meeting. I strapped some Dirt Tires, Racing Intercooler, Racing Muffler, Racing Chip, Stage 1 Turbo, Racing Transmission, and Full Suspension. Do I need any settings for the Racing Transmission and the Full Suspension?

For the tranny settings, the auto slider will work for the time being. (do a search on "tranny trick" once you are getting into tuning more deeply)

Now about the suspension...
Definately need to work on settings there.

I suggest asking in this thread for settings, or just going to the OLR school in the online racing section of this forum.
In the olr school you should be able to find help for almost any kind of tuning... although experimentation is usually the best way to go with tuning. ;)

Good luck again.
btw, does anyone use the "active yaw control" on their evo?

You might get a better answer if you let us know if you run automatic or manual transmission and what track you are intending to run here...

That being said, I think for that car you are gonna want another stage of turbo so you are up closer to about 450 HP if this is your first shot at Rally. That is, unless you are a really really good driver on Rally Tracks.

[Edit:] Even with the bigger cannon, you are gonna want to be very attentive to the race. Especially once you get to the third stage (most difficult) of the series. You might want to test around with the tracks to decide which series to begin with. Some of that decision might be influenced by which Rally Car you want to win first. In my humble opinion, the easiest one to win for me is the first one (Rally Challenge at Tahiti) although the car you get (Celica Rally Car) is as Mr. P put it during the ARC II OLR races, "a bit of a barge". Smokey Mt is fairly easy as well and you get a "Smoking" car in the Focus from that race.

One other thing you might want to consider is to take this suped up Evo you have now, put on some medium tires and go to the Amateur Evo Meeting. You win that and you take home a "spankin" Evo Rally Car. [/Edit:]

Also, you are gonna want some brakes to handle the additional speed you are going to inherently have... Especially if you run automatic transmission.

At some point you may want to add LSD... and differential controls. Both are very helpful at Rally.

When running Rally, a good starting point on the suspension is to set it up fairly neutral. That means set the ride height up to around 140/140 so you have plenty of travel. Leave the spring settings low (likely where they already are) to start with. Set your shock bound and rebound around 5/5 and 5/5. Start with the stabilizers around 3/3.

If you drive it around a bit like that and see what you don't like about it. Then when come back you will be able to ask more specific questions like: How do I get more understeer? ...or... How can I get the rear to swing quicker? There aren't really magic general settings that work for everyone because everyone has their own driving style. Asking the more specific questions helps folks to come up with ideas on how to help you "tweak" it in to fit your driving style.

@GoKents

I can't decide about AYC... I can't seem to tell much difference. I mean, I think I understand what it is supposed to do however, have never really thought it gained me that much so I don't use it. I have developed a habit of throttle control through the corners(feathering/burping/whatever) when I drive 4 wheel drive vehicles that probably is more comfortable for me. Plus, on tarmac where I think AYC is supposed to be the biggest benefit, I rarely run any LSD which does much the same thing I think. Just habits I guess.

I'd say start with either of the wet tracks. You can use any car you already have, and you don't even have to buy dirt tires. SS 5 wet gets you the Xsara which you can then use in FF races, and SS 5 wet II gets you the Impreza rally car prototype which is a really good rally car IMO. That's the cheapest way to go...I did the latter one to get the impreza with an F1 car, overkill, yes I know

I also bought an STi because I don't think you can win the bug-eyed version anywhere (I don't mean the LM or the rally car, just the production version) and used that for one of the races. I know I didn't need to but I love that car :)

I ran all the rally races with the modded Beetle RSI I had won someplace else before. That didn't leave much chance for the AI cars.
Then you'll get 8 rally cars (I don't count the Escudo you get after golding the Rally mode) : among which the Focus is the best to me and the Xsara the worst.
Nothing more to say : when I fancy some rally driving I play Colin McRae, not Gran Turismo : realistic damage make a big difference.

The best rally car is a free rally car.

I am going to be using the prize Mitsu Evo Prototype i won on some other race to get me to where I can win the Escort Rally car. Why buy when you can race for free?

I would get a car that can have rally tires put on and tune it up then win the rally cars.

imprezza is by the best one there and a good car to stick rally tires on would be the Viper just for the hell of it :)

a really cheap good rally car is the trueno... though it requires some tuning before its rally ready.. at least 300HP. and u'll have lots of money left over;)

the 1st car i used wuz the evo6 tme. but the trueno is good enough to winn all the races easilly... dont be intimidated by the other car pulling ahead at the start.:)

I like the Focus the best, it also owns the American championships and can take a stage 3 turbo if i'm not mistaken. The impreza is good too.

For me, I took my maxxed out R34, raced in the rally until I got a Celica, and then I worked my way up from the and beat Rally mode.

OK, my words of advice here, would be for the Subaru Legacy. With about 150K you can set it up to conquer the entire section.

Here's the big hitch. THE AI CHEAT SEVERLY. I've seen them make up an entire half lap in less than a half lap. Similar to teh "Catch" up ability when racing a buddy in two player, how one car can seemingly keep up with one that severly out classes it.

So you have to aim for smooth, as most of your wins (Unless you're in an overly powerful car, like the 787b in the rainy tracks) will be margins of 5-10 seconds. Be smooth and accurate, and you'll win. Not by a mile, but by enough.

In the compendium, I used a mines Skyline, with near full tilt. And still only managed a few seconds win.

Good luck,

AO

ESPECIALLY in Alps II and Wet I!!! Sheesh!!!

In Alps II the Celica has absolutely the worst line around the track and can be behind you by several seconds at a sector and before you find the next piece of gravel he is bumping you in the butt!

In Wet I, it seems that Evo AI can be still going around the hairpin when you start down the straight toward the start/finish and he WILL pass you before the end of the straight!

maybe so... but it also could be that ur just copying the AI's rythm when its ahead of u. cus i usually burn the AI using stock rally cars. but i have noticed if ur wastefull w/ ur turning... (too much oversteer) the AI catches right up... but sometimes it feels like they suddenly get a boost

i like using the trueno for rally races cus then it feels like something out of initial d. w/ the WRC cars having much better accelleration. but i'm not wastefull w/ my turning so i catch up and pass..

Dude... the AI ain't got no rythm for one and for two, I didn't say they were ahead of me :D

I won the Evo Rally Prototype, and used it for the first rally series, and used each rally car I won for the next series I decided to tackle. (The only cheat I used was a 1002hp Altezza LM in one Tahiti race, just to see how much power I could handle on dirt.)

In my second game, I'm using a WRX with a Stage 1 turbo and few other mods. Easy wins. I'm going to use modded road cars to win all those races.

The Clio Race car is still the record holder for MR cars set up for rallying, as far as I recall. If that is still the case, then its cost is close.

Cheers,

Master

The Motorsport Elise with race supension can make a pretty decent rally machine as well. I didn't use it competitively but I've toured it around the Alps a few times.

NOpe, it's been well documented, that the AI get a boost. Many replays were saved with HIgh powered cars running around different rally tracks, and each time, the AI time was noted. Then through the Magic of MK's Utility, the noted upgrades were scraped from the AI's car. We then took the identical car to the AI around the same track, and couldn't come close to the times the AI was posting.

So what it comes down to is staying smooth, keeping good lines, and only staying as far ahead of the AI as you need to, in order to post a win.

That and a judicious block from time to time doesn't hurt either:lol:
