Rebel Against This Empire!!!
I bought a new Toyota 86 and tuned it to the max, and when I took it for a spin was I amazed. It just sounds so....good. I just can't think of any other way to describe it. Any thoughts?

Does it sound how a boxer 4 should sound? If not, it doesn't matter how nice it sounds. I've heard it stock from a vid and it sounds very much like a regular inline 4.

The concept had the same sound of the Spec C Type RA Impreza which had a more correct sound sample.

i dont think it sounds all that great honestly...but its a nice handling car.

The 86 has equal length headers. In real life, it sounds almost identical to an inline 4. The only thing slightly unique is the induction noise.

I always wondered that. Is this the same situation with the JDM Impreza? Because I've seen real life videos and they do sound like the stock premium Subaru Impreza WRX STi Spec C type RA (wow, that's a long name)in the game. Nothing like the bigger engined US version and its well known "bubbly" sound.

i was actually hoping it would have a more aggressive tone from the boxer engine

That's the exhaust on the WRX STi causing that deep burble to be heard so audibly. The stock WRX don't have that big soup can muffler and it's not as loud either. Lets hope that they give up control of more sounds, so we can turn up and down what we want to hear. Transmission whine will get almost muted and I would hope that they added gear box sounds especially to the race tuned cars and older cars

Sorry to disapoint, but it sounds nothing like a boxer engine... So yes yet another GT5 sounds fail!

A boxer and inline don't necessarily sound different, not even in reality.
It really depends on the concept.

You are right is that unequal lenght exhaust manifold used by Subaru that gives the cars that sweet sweet sound! A Subbie with equal lenght headers sounds just like any tuned Honda.
I should've said in my post it sounds nothing like a Subaru Boxer engine.

Racing exhaust sounds like other 300 cars with that kind of pipes...

It sounds much better with the sport one. And I don't care if it has 30cv less.

In all honesty, yes, the 86 does sound good, but come on, have you guys heard the SLS Stock? Eargasm on wheels...

Agreed, I purposely did a 10 lap race on SSR5 just for the noise

And I think the racing exhaust on the GT86 sounds terrible, just like an RM Impreza. The best exhaust is the semi-racing :D Sounds like God having very unusual sex. ;)

Try the semi-racing, basically the sport exhaust but more noise!

The best sounding game after the update (In my opinion) is the Plymouth Cuda 440 Six Pack '71 completely stock apart from a titanium racing exaust, try it, and then take it to a track and rev it slowly at a standstill

sounds even better than the Mazda 787b.

Yeah, i stay away from Titanium exhaust as much as possible.

even better than a RM camaro '69?

For me it sounded very bad

I don't like the sound of the 86, it sounds exactly the same as the Impreza, with standard and racing exhausts. It sounds like a straight 6 with the semi race exhaust and it sounds like some weird mix of a V6 and a boxer from the rear while sounding like a straight 6 from the front with the sport exhaust. It sounds so stupid driving past in the replay, making the straight 6 sound fading to that weird boxer/V6 sound.

Exactly. The old Subaru fours were basically the same as the old VW "flat" fours, with no real regard to the exhaust routing (it is only a road car); the major difference being the 50 years between them.

Flat fours fire both cylinders in one bank right after each other (well, 180 crank degrees; the firing interval for an even, four-stroke four), so that you get two close pulses and then a gap (equivalent to two pulses) in each exhaust branch. If these branches aren't the same length, when they're joined, the pulses overlap at different points according to the engine speed, giving rise to the classic, phasing lumpiness of boxer fours. In the Subaru's case, one branch was about three times longer than the other (at least from the pictures I've seen), which is more than enough to be audible. If they're equal length, the pulses interleave perfectly, unless you keep the branches separate and their exits spaced apart on the car (like an old Vee-Dub).

The intake is unique, but find a way to separate the intake on a straight four in the same way (i.e. the two end pairs), and it'll sound the same. You can do the same with the exhaust.
The base sound for the boxer four (with unequal length or "true dual" exhaust) is that of a 180° twin (straight two). The two pairs of end cylinders of a straight four are like 180 twins, too.

Now I want to mod a straight four to sound like a boxer...

Meh.... its ok but i like the semi racing exhaust better sounds more real.

The Spec C Type RA in GT5 DOES sound much like in real life with its stock exhaust. I always though this car had a wrong sound sample like many, but it surprised me when I saw a couple of videos of fully JDM Imprezas, including the RA. I was expecting to hear the typical paused rumble that US spec Imprezas have, but they sound nothing like that.

A hint that this car has a correct sample is when you just cruise at low revs. You can hear the typical boxer sound, but it raises to almost completely dissapear when you accelerate.

JDM Impreza

Notice when he revs up how the car sounds almost the same as the one in GT5. Of course this one is a real one and there's going to be differences. But you can catch the basic sound. It sounds smoother, and more like an inline 4 as it picks up revs. Just like the one in the game. If the video doesn't play then go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-g1c71WEqFw It's really worth watching.

US spec Impreza
You really don't need to watch this. You know how a US spec STi sounds like. The difference is clear. Of course they have different exhaust systems, but if you go through thousands of videos from both versions, the difference is always obvious.

This is a bit off topic, but big 90 degree V8's with 180* headers (as in headers that pair cylinders that fire 180* from each other, which on a 90* V8 entails routing piping from one side of the block to the other!) sound quite interesting.

90* V8:

180* headers on 90* V8:

The 180* headers basically make a 90* V8 sound like a really big 4 cylinder.

Haven't really tried that car with the stock exhaust, I'll have to give it a shot! I am now starting to apreciate more and more the tuning restriction in the game.

No need for the vids, I drive one every day and God do I love it!!!

Same goes for the Viper ACR. 💡

They fixed the odd 4 cylinder sound that it had? Although still you could make it sound like a Viper with the sports exhaust. The one I want them to fix is the Viper GTS. Benn having the same sound since GT2, and it does NOT sound like a Viper, not even with any of the exhausts. I would settle if at lesat they put the same sound that the other Vipers have.

That's one car that you don't need to see to know it's there. At least with the US version 👍

Heh, on the subject of Scoobys, I once saw this, which confused me, not having any idea what EG33 meant...

Those 180 headers are cool, too. The "180" refers to the 180 crank degrees between ignitions in cylinders in a given bank. A cross-plane V8 is uneven within each bank, which is why it burbles. A more accurate comparison for the sound of 180 headers is to that of a flat-plane V8, which is essentially two interleaved (flat-plane) four cylinders. Note, though, that the GT40 still has a noticeable cross-plane sound, because of the intake (although in that configuration, with exposed ITBs / individual carb' "barrels", you'd do well to distinguish a flat-plane V8, too)

You could also get 180 degree intakes for cross-plane V8s, too, for the complete conversion! (Except most available 180 intakes would sound very similar on a flat-plane V8.)

The cylinder pairings in the intake are identical to those in the 180 headers. 👍

Wow, that last pic is insane! So basically you could make a regular V8 sound something like a Lotus Esprit with these headers?

I've heard many Esprits and the ones with the stock exhaust sound like the typical flat-plane V8, like a very pissed 4 cylinder. With an aftermarket exhaust and headers they sound more like a regular cross-plane. Here's an example:

First of all, this video is an instant eargasm! Imagine GT5 with this sound! Both cars sem to have an aftermarket exhaust. Though the silver one must have a different setup. You will notice that the red one sounds more like the typical Flat-plane V8, specially in the driveby. The silver one sounds more like a regular cross-plane.

On a side note: It's funny that the silver Esprit starts just like the one in GT5. It even misses the start at the first seconds :)

I'm not familiar with the plumbing on these, but it seems they use "log"-type exhaust manifolds, which does give a lumpier sound than normal. Maybe Lotus tweaked the '02+ model for the US market? Interestingly the guy has another vid of his (the red) Esprit on a dyno with a twin exhaust, and it sounds different. The centre-exit exhaust seems to do something to the sound; perhaps similarly to the McLaren MP4-12C (also uses log manifolds); maybe it overlaps the pulses from each bank out of phase, like the Subaru, but more subtly.
