Big Teams Could Field Third Car

Well, we already knew the rule existed and that it is becoming increasingly likely to happen, but is Ecclestone really the person who would make it happen? His ties to the FIA are becoming strained to say the least. It seems to me like he's just talking as much as he can about various F1 topics right now to somehow regain some his respect or just to be plastered over the news more often. The teams clearly don't think on the same wavelength as him right now and I'm doubting whether he really has any say anymore about very much.
 
They should do this just to fill the grid because its getting really sparse! Would be interesting seeing the teams have to do strategies and pit stops for 3 cars! would be chaos! :lol:

How would this work for the constructors championship?
Only the points from the top 2 cars?
Top 2 cars each race or top 2 cars for season?
Pick your points earning cars at beginning of season?

hmmmm... this would make room for Alonso to join Ferrari, but 3 #1 drivers?! I wouldn't want to try to manage that. Sato in a McLaren?
 
In the past in the WRC, back when 3 cars were allowed, the teams had to nominate before each event 2 cars to score constructers points. Everyone got drivers points as usual. As both the WRC and F1 are run by the FIA, that could well be the most likely option.
 
Either all teams should field three cars in which case they could all score constructor points or if only some teams had three cars they'd have to nominate who gets to score the points.
 
Which is why I don't see the benefit for any team to do it (if not all teams field a 3rd car), wouldn't it just be a bigger waste of money and resources? Maybe some larger teams could use it to give their test driver(s) some race experience and give some junior staff experience too, but I would have thought the extra cost involved with running a 3rd car would overule the benefits.
 
All the teams take a spare car to each race don't they? They would only have to put the test driver in it. That wouldn't amount to much in the way of additional cost.
 
They take a spare chassis for spare parts if a driver stacks it. Which would probably meaning having to take a 4th chassis, meaning another truck and even more expenses making the car, paying extra mechanics, truckies, purcahse of the truck trailer, all the modifications to the trailer etc. Don't think it would bother Ferrari too much tough.

If they were smart they could use the third car for 'testing'.

I could see big problems with the pits though. Remember what a mess stacking the cars when it starts to rain can be?

I can´t see this happening in a hurry TBH. All teams are under financial pressure, and it´s not likely they´d spend more money than necessary.
Ardius also pointed a finger at Bernies involvement in this, and AFAIK he has just about nothing to say about what the FIA should impose or not.
Mr. E seems to be off by miles from what the FIA are doing right now. The new rules where imposed much to save money, and Bernie is saying the opposite all the time.

Yeah, they're probably just doing this to fill up the grid, there are too many teams dropping out.

Really? Where? Not one team has dropped out yet (for this season). Super Aguri were always going to be gonners anyway.

Honda's entry - or more accurately, the Team Formerly Known as Honda - is sai to be under threat because they supposedly need six weeks to get everything together before Melbourne, which means they'll have to wrap things up soon. We haven't heard anything since Nick Fry was said to have put forth a bid for a management buyout, but with the demise of Super Aguri and Prodrive never making the 2008 grid because of the customer car row, Formula One needs Honda's presence to fill the grid under the terms of the Concorde Agreement.

Yes obviously I realise Honda Racing's situation. However, Pepsi stated:
"Too many teams have dropped out" when only 1 team has in the past year. Honda as a manufacturer have pulled out already, but the team has not and their 2009 entry fee has already been paid for.
Also, we have heard something since Nick Fry's mention of a buyout - the team are seeking assistance from the UK government as part of the bailouts for the UK car industry, which would be awesome in my opinon because I'd technically own an F1 team then.

I think it's only slated as a temporary situation - ie only one year - in order to coax somebody else into the sport to fill the void.
 
If Ferrari does field a third car this year, should it have the #27? :D
