Has Ford arrived late for its own party?

The firm has just announced a special 30th birthday edition of the evergreen Fiesta - but it's now actually 31 years since the supermini was first launched.

A spokesman admitted that although the Fiesta MkI was on sale in 1976, the official introduction continued through into 1977. He added that the company decided 2007 was the best year for a celebration model. And to mark the occasion, the firm has unwrapped this 30th Anniversary model, which is based on the sporty Zetec S variant, complete with £1,400 worth of extras.

The most striking feature of the three-door celebration model is the full-length chequered design on the roof. This tops off the exclusive Radian yellow paint scheme, which is contrasted by a black finish for the wing mirrors, door rubbing strips and roof spoiler. Darkened privacy glass stops prying eyes from seeing into an interior which has been given a luxurious makeover.

Ebony black leather covers the cabin, including the heavily bolstered front seats and chunky three-spoke steering wheel. Other additions include chequer-finish door kickplates and silver inserts on the dashboard. Air-conditioning also comes as standard, while entertainment is taken care of with an MP3 player connection.

Under the bonnet is the 1.6 litre 98bhp Duratec petrol powerplant from the Zetec S, which is linked to a close-ratio, short-shift five-speed manual gearbox. Lowered and stiffened suspension finishes off the performance enhancements of the limited-edition newcomer. Only 400 examples of the Fiesta 30th Anniversary will be made. Sales are due to start in March, with prices starting from £12,595.

Did they really have to put the checkered flag on the roof? The only new Ford that excites me is the Fusion just because of the all wheel drive.

What about the Focus ST? The Mondeo ST220? The fiesta ST is supposedly pretty good aswell.

But you won't get any of them in the US.

If the Focus ST sold in the US, it would sell pretty well.

I would actually like to drive some of the European Fords. Some of them actually look kind of fun to drive. I should have said American Fords bore me. I forgot about the 1996 Bronco Eddie Bauer too. With the 350 Cleveland, it was pretty good.

On the comment:

That is a big *MAYBE* about us getting the cars in question, as a lot of it depends on what strings Mullaly can pull here in North America. Given that we are receiving yet another "updated" MKI Focus in drag, the current MKII ST will probably never happen. As for the Mondeo, rumors are flying around Detroit that we may get the next-gen Mondeo, but it may be a stretch...

...On the Fiesta...

I've been arguing for a while that we need the Fiesta here in America so Ford can better compete against the Honda Fit (Jazz) and Nissan Versa (Tiida). Granted, the Focus can be had at similar prices, but it is a larger car, less-refined, and generally not equipped nearly as well. I think the Fiesta could do well in America, but they could probably only sell the Zetec S and ST models here, given that most of the competition has over 100 BHP these days.
