As some of you may or may not have noticed, I haven't been on here at all this past week. Here's why.

Last Sunday, I was just doing some normal browsing of the internet when completely out of the blue, I lost my connection. I at first assume it is a problem with the network in my residence, as I already lost my connection for a few days a while back. But in that case, the problem fixed itself somehow (I have no idea how that happened; no restart was even needed to fix the problem.). This time around, the problem is still here after nearly a week.

So at first I waited to see if the problem would fix itself again. When I realized that probably was not happening, I called tech support to see if the problem was something on their end. As it turns out, it was not their problem. When they enabled and disabled my node, I could see the corresponding changes happen in my network settings. It was also then that I saw that I was supposedly connected to the network, yet I was not sending or recieving any packets.

One fix was suggested by the tech support. They sent me a file called winsock fix, which could solve the problem. I got the file (using my roomate's computer), and tried to run it on my comp. The program froze...

Next on my list was trying to install new drivers for my onboard ethernet. I tried running the installer, and it froze too...

Also, often after I make changes to my ethernet adaptor's settings, the window freezes after I click ok.

So right now I am extremely confused and extremely pissed off. I have some possible fixes, but they goddamn freeze on me. And it looks like anything that is related to my network settings freezes on me if I do anything more than look at it.

I have no idea what the hell is going on with my comp, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Currently I am thinking about reinstalling windows, but I'd rather hear if there are any better ideas out there before I go ahead with that lengthy process.

Also, I have considered buying a PCI ethernet card, but I fear it would be a temporary solution to a bigger problem, if it would even be a solution at all.

If you're running XP and using the native XP drivers, try uninstalling the network card from "System Properties", Hardware tab.. Then reboot.. XP should automagically re-install the drivers...

If that doesn't work, try un-installing the IP protocol completely...

Reinstalling Windows isn't necessary most of the time. I suggest trying what Flerbizky said and seeing what happens. That procedure will set the computer to be in the same state network wise as it would be if you reinstalled Windows.

Try talking to the people at your ISP again and seeing if they can run checks on your line. They should be able to pinpoint if the error is occuring at your PC or your router or your local internet router.

Look in the BIOS to see what the settings are for your onboard ethernet. Randomly mine decided to switch itself off one time and it was fixed by reenabling it in the BIOS.

Tried uninstalling it, the network settings window froze. Tried it again in safe mode, got a different list for network cards, tried uninstalling the proper one, and it didn't work since it said 'This device may be required to boot the computer'. :odd:

I also tried to uninstall the ip protocol... but the uninstall button didn't light up.

I already talked to them, and I'm convinced this is a problem on my end of the line. I also looked in BIOS, and it is definitley turned on.

I'm going to try switching cables with my roomate (his internet works), and see if that does anything. Otherwise, I think tomorrow I'm going to be reinstalling windows. I think this is the best option right now, considering all of the weird freezings.

Also, I have tried system restore, but that has not worked for some reason.

i had a similar problem installing a wireless pci card into my pc.

i would suggest you first dl drvier for the onboard ethernet from your mobo's site and put it on a floppy from your boys pc and reinstall that.

if that doesnt work then try and reinstall windows, i know it sounds extreme but it really isnt. make sure you back all your stuff up.

if that doesnt work then i would suggest an ethernet pci card or usb card.
