I've been playing the demo for the past few days. This game is real easy and hard. It's hard if you try to Rambo it, but easy if you squat and move slowly and pick off your enemies one at a time. The AK-47 in single shot mode rules for long distance shots while zooming in. Medium range requires burst mode, and then full auto for suppression fire. Fun stuff but I seem to have a glitch. My character keeps slowly moving to the left even if I don't touch the controller. Is that the norm?
The demo is pathetic. If you want the full black experience you should at least rent it for sure. Demo is no comparison to the final version of the game. Rent it and at least play to the end of level 5.

It could be just that your controller is sticking slightly?

That happens to me sometimes in other games, the position which the stick ends up in is ever so slightly pulled to the left or right which causes movement. I notice it mostly in racing games and I haven't noticed it in Black.

However it could just be a glitch in the demo...
Yeah, the controls are pretty sensitive in this game, sometimes my character starts moving alone but that's because the L3 is a bit off centre. I just turn it around a couple of times and it stops. It's not the game's fault, it's the DS2 getting old. I gotta buy a new one anyway.

I was playing this over the weekend and last night, definitely one of the best FPS' for the PS2. Too bad there's no online mode, it would be so cool playing those huge levels in multiplayer.

What I like about this game are the huge stages, it usually takes me 50 minutes to finish each. Last night I finished level 4 (I think it was level 4, the one you have to shot some mines on the ground across a field, sometimes you get some really cool chain reactions), this one took me one hour and five minutes to beat. And although I like the long levels, that's one of the reasons I'm moving so slowly through this game. I don't have much time to play the PS2 lately, so when I finish a level I realize I won't have an extra hour to finish one more and then I turn the game off to play something else in those extra minutes.

Also, the graphics are really good on this game, the level I played last night was beautiful. I think they did an amazing job with the lighting and special effects. Black is now on my list of PS2 "WOW" games, you know, games that really stand out from other PS2 titles when it comes to graphics. Other games on this list are God of War, GT4, TT, Jak series and Ratchet and Clank series.

I won't be able to play it tonight but I'll try to play one more stage at least on wednesday night.

Im glad your loving the game so far. You said you were on level 4 and liked it. Well just wait until you go thru level 5. It is by far the best level of the game. Especially towards the middle and end. Your jaw will be dropping in awe!! :dopey: :dopey: :dopey:
I agree Black is at the very top of my favorite FPS WOW games for the PS2.

I'm still playing this demo. I really love this game. I've never liked a FPS this much before, ever. This is a really fun game. But what you said about the demo concerns me.

What's wrong with the demo? Is it too easy? To many glitches? Very little depth?

I know there is more to Black than the demo. Like, more guns and Blackmail Objectives can include laptops, safes etc. which you must destroy, Intel Objectives include files and briefcases which you must pick up, Recon Objectives require you to pick up a blueprint and Armament Objectives require you to find a hidden weapon in the level. But, what else is different about it, or is that what you meant?

I see the price dropped ten bucks so instead of waiting for it to go on sale for twenty, I might as well get it now.

I think he means the levels mostly. The demo is pretty much what you get, concerning graphics, playabillity, etc. But that demo is just the beginning of the first level, which is not very exciting really. There are much better levels ahead, prettier and cooler to play on.

Yes exaclty. The demo is only the first level. If you like the first level you are in for one heck of a treat when you get the full game. Like I said above, levels 4 and 5 are simply jaw dropping!!! You wont regret buying the full version of Black.

Thanks for the response, guys.

What concerns me is the game gets a lot more difficult. Like the way I play it in the demo wont work with the full version. I like the game the way I play it in the demo. Slow, and low; hiding from enemies and then striking them from afar with a pistol shot to the head. What worries me, is the sudden flood-attack of enemies, and not having a way out like if you ran up too close to the action in the demo. I call that "Rambo" mode. Rambo mode sucks because there's too many enemies to deal with at once, and death comes quick. How many "lives" do you get in the game? I notice the demo ends once you die. Is that the same in the game?

Are there many Rambo moments? I wouldn't call that fun. So, I hope I'm being over cautious. I know, I know... just buy it, already! I tried to rent it, but no luck. Besides, I don't like to rent games considering I have to rent two other games and all for an entire week and it costs $15.

Rambo mode kicks ass and yes there are tons of Rambo moments. The good news is that they give you tons of explosives and ammo to mow everyone down. Its quite simple. If you havent played the full version of this game then you truly are missing out. It is a classic one of a kind, blow everything up go crazy shooting everything, kind of a game. Those are rare to find and they did an incredible job with Black. This is one of those games that I will always be able to pick up and play over and over again. Its that fun!! I have played just about every game out there on most systems and this is a one of a kind trend setter. 👍 👍
Like I always say. Rent it, get at least thru level 5 then post your opinion of the game. If you cant rent it then buy it.

OK, it's what you just said that scares me. Heh.

I don't like Rambo mode of game play. I always like to hide and snipe a bad guy from a distance, even if he's shooting at me.

I don't mind Rambo Mode if it's one guy, or two guys at a time. More than that and I get killed easily. Especially if I can't hide behind something.

I'll go and rent this one, even though I've got to rent several other games at the same time, which I hate to do.

I finished this game on normal a couple of days ago. I'm a bit dissapointed that it's all over now. :(

I have done the first level on hard. What are the silver weapons like? I haven't seen any yet.

Actually the game is mostly played in "stealth" mode, at least that's how I play it. "Rambo" moments will happen only if you want to, there's always some place to hide. And, even if there isn't, you are almost always full of health packs, which means you can get shot a lot before dying. And I mean a lot.

Exactly, its only arnie in "Commando" mode when you want it to be. You can play the slowly advancing from a distance, doing headshots from afar, hiding behind stuff game if you want (the easiest/most sure-fire way to win IMO). There are a few sequences that are more "open" where you have to be more ballsy and just inflict more damage than you take however, key scenes where your cover gets blown up - matrix pillar rooms, last room in the game etc...

Edit (hints): Actually, the last room in the game you can play really carefully by hiding in those little side-rooms (just be wary of dudes coming in your roof by blowing it up - once its happened once it won't happen again, you're free to use that room as a good hidey-hole) and shooting anyone who comes up the steps. Also, if you stand ON the steps (near the top, almost on the steel platform) so the huge machine guns can't get you, and manovour very carefully so you can just shoot the machine guns... its possible to take out those big guns without getting hurt by them at all (you do this when every-one else has been killed and you can happily sit on the stairs without worry).

@Solid: BUY THE DAMN GAME MAN! If you enjoyed the demo, you'll enjoy the rest of it, its way better and I've played it like you like playing, too. Because of the linearity of the levels, there is always somwhere to retreat to when things get hectic.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I appreciate it.

Yeah, I'm going to get this game. I saw a bunch of trailers from the first link of this thread, and I liked what I saw.

The problem I see facing me when I buy this game is what weapons to use! You can only keep two! Bah. All of them look fantastic. I wish we had a backpack, or had the ability to use whatever gun we found at any point during the game.

I see the G36 looks like a winner. The Walther 2000 sniper rifle looks great. The magnum and the MP5 look like fun. But I probably will use a M60 (BFG) and W2000 combo. The problem with that, no silencer. You can't kill in stealth without one, and oh how I love to kill in stealth. Too bad you can't put a scope on a silenced AK-47, or have the M16 with an ACOG and silencer.

Now try to go thru the entire game on Hard. There are more objectives and no health packs. :sly:

This weekend I pulled out Black (PS2) and played that for several hours again. Excellent FPS if you love to just blow everything up. Never gets old. Level 5 is the best!

I'm getting that game soon because I heard everyone said it's an excellent game.

Well worth it in my opinion, I've had it since its UK launch and still get it out every now and again just to blow the hell out of stuff.

👍

You will really enjoy Black. It is still one of the games that I recommend to anyone when they ask about first games to get for the xbox or PS2. I always mention Black. Just wait until you reach level 5 it gets crazy how much stuff you can blow up and the frame rate NEVER suffers.
Just like Scaff said, I also pull Black out once in a while just to blow everything up. 👍

I was playing this at my cousin's on sunday and now I feel like getting back to it, since I never got to finish the game.

Get prepared for one heck of a battle in the last room. My god I really thought I might not ever beat the last room of the game. What was the last level you played at your cousins? The game starts getting really good on level 5.

Just bought this over the weekend - what a fantastic game!!!!

I'd been meaning to get hold of it for a while, but after seing Vexd play it at the last GTP Lan party i new i had to bite the bullet and just buy it.

The graphics have to be the best available on the PS2 so far - few jaggies, little framerate slow down etc etc.

I'm playing on Normal and have so far done that first initial short 'city war zone' level and the second, longer 'border crossing/farm' level. It's just a shame you can't save mid-level.

Is there anyway of skipping the cut-scenes at the start of a level?

Yeah I agree this is a great game. I sure hope they come out with a Black 2 for the xbox360. I was actually talking about this game over the weekend about how good it was. The sounds, the explosions, the graphics. I easily give this a 9.5/10 for a must play FPS. 👍 👍
What level are you currently on? Keep playing all the way to the end because it just gets better and better every level. Especially when you get close to the end of level 5! 4 is also a lot of fun.

i never got black but ive always wanted it so i might go and buy it this weekend is it realy as good as some of the trailers such as are you able to blow up the surroundings

Yes it really is one of the best FPS I have played when it comes to destruction. Everything every blows up. All the bullet holes and shells stay through the entire game. I havent played many games at all that have the explosions and destruction that BLack has. Just buy it. I say its a must have in your collection of games. It really is as good as everyone sais. :) 👍 👍

Just finished 'Trenska Border Crossing' - took an hour and forty minutes to complete, i'm sure i could do it much quicker 2nd time around but rushing through it isn't really the point is it?

I've not even attempted the next level yet - i was really impressed by the size of the Border Crossing level, if the rest are the same scale i'll be playing this for years to come.

Yes each level takes about an hour to complete even if you rush through it. Then after you beat the game on easy make sure to go back on the next setting higher. If you can beat the very last room of the game in under 10 tries then I salute you. It is brutal hard even on the easiest setting. The last room of the game is fun but very very hard.
The other great part is you can replay any level at any time. I throw BLack in once in a while and just do level 4 and level 5. Those are a lot of fun. The bathroom scene in level 5 is just amazing. Then it gets better and better.

Snap

Black is easily one of the best 'frustration busters' that I know off, I regularly play levels again for that reason, did just that with the 'docks' level a few days ago.

I guess I'm on the last stage then, because I can't get passed this room on normal difficulty. I've tried it like six or seven times already with no luck. It's damn fun though.

I remember the first time I got to it. Down a long stairwell, through a doorway, then a metal door slams shut behind you and all hell breaks loose. I was running around screaming shooting at everything. It was a complete ambush!
