Black (PS2 and Xbox)

yeah, i am playing it on hard now too. quite a challenge. soemtimes when i am bored, i like to go to the docks level, and just try to complete the whole thing with only a shotgun.

try that. one gun for the entire level. teaches you to save ammo, and quite a challenge. some guns are good for long range, others for short. makes things interesting.

My dads playing it and loves it. He said it reminds him of his other faviroute, return to castle wolfenstein.

I was actually thinking that I need to find time to finish it. I haven't played since the last round of messages up there.

I played it again about a month ago, for about the first time in six months. I tried to complete the final level again but still couldn't quite manage it :irked:

It's like the final mission (34?) in GT4 - something i'm destined to never complete. Mostly through lack of spare time. :indiff:

Well, I hear the frustrations of members posting in this thread.
The game definately has its flaws... Luckily those flaws aren't the type to ruin a game for me. For example, Duke mentioned the rediculus amount of space between checkpoints- I agree, completing a difficult level is really hard, if for no other reason than having to start up so far from your last point after death. :(

Of course, with that said, I still love the fact that the game plays so well, looks so good, and has such a great foundation.
I say great foundation because of a few reasons...
1) No ifs, ands, or buts about it, this game is a "run and gun" and doesn't pretend to be anything else.
2) The weapons are all great looking, real world weapons... Don't get me wrong, I like the originality of Halo's weapons and Half life's weapons but I love the accuracy of the portrayal of weapons in Black. 👍
3) The game seems to run well on a PS2. That might not mean much to some of you but I have an appreciation for games that recognize the limits of the hardware and build around that... Black never seems to overwhelm the PS2 and with as good as this game looks I'm gonna have to say that's an accomplishment in itself. 👍

Those three reasons alone are good enough for me to go play the game and hopefully they are good enough to remind a few of you why the game is worth completing (or playing again as I am doing now).

Ohh, yeah, I hadn't played a shooter in a while - since Quake II, probably - and I definitely appreciated Black. The sound is good, the visuals are good, the atmosphere is good. A few oddities - like shooting someone in the face takes 5 or 6 shots to knock them down but dink on the helmet and they're dead - do not reduce the enjoyment of the game. If I get time over break I'll probably start a level or two back and work my way up to the finale again.

I never finished the last level of this because of that checkpoint issue. I got so close to the checkpoint I needed and I got killed just before that by a bunch of those armoured, shielded enemies. So being me I gave up in frustration but never returned to the game. I played it about a month ago and it was odd how different the graphics are now. I remember when it first came out that I was drooling over the visuals (It's still a damn good looking game for it's time).

Black is my only first-person shooter on the PS2 - how does it compare to Medal of Honour etc?

No comparison.
M.O.H. is the kind of game where you can shoot someone in the foot or the head or the torso and they always have the same death animation. Black is nearly as accurate as Resident Evil 4 when it comes to hit recognition. You shoot someone in the legs with a shotgun and they tumble forward with their legs sweeping back. You shoot them in the head and they die on the spot, and the same logic can be applied to everywhere else you can shoot someone.
All in all I much preffer Black to any other PS2 shooter. 👍

With that out of the way, I've got an update on my progress going through the game on "Hard."
I've just beat the Asylum level and now I'm at some kind of dockyard (starting with a Mac10 and a shotgun). Once I get a ways through the AK with silencer becomes availible and from there it's just a matter of me taking the time to beat the level.
Back when I've made it to the next level. Until then,

Funny thing, I was just thinking of playing this game again. That's several people, including myself, that have had the same idea. What triggered this? COD4?

I'm not sure what triggered this but I tell you what my guess is... :sly:

The game sticks to the fundamentals.
Gun detail is good.
Gun characteristics are good (shotguns don't shoot long and rifles aren't great up close, etc.).
Headshots register and bodyshots don't do too much.
Lots of bullets create cover and grenades go boom!

There's not really much to it but what is there is very good. I seriously consider this the best PS2 shooter. With an online element I feel this game would have done well still up to this point in time. Maybe a PS3/ X360 version is in the works? I'd like that based on what I've enjoyed so far.

As for my progress in the game... :indiff:
Haven't played through the dockyard yet, I just can't deal with that lousy Mac10 Elite. :yuck: (horrible accuracy)

I completed this a bunch of times on Black-ops mode, and still keep it there with all my top games.

I agree with everything written on the last page of this thread (thats all i read) and will concur with Kent that its the best shooter on ps2 (which will upset all the 'splitters players) except for a few things like, once id figured out a weapon for an enemy tally, the game became relatively straightforward, getting to black-ops mode made life much easier instead of harder, and finally, there are far too many bad guys in the last room who refuse to come out until you're heart is beating so loudly you cant see anything.

I found wearing headphones whilst playing in pitch blackness was just toooooo cool, and kept me awake at night, and also, i had a moment once whilst following a truck the next day at work (i drive for a living) where i thought "i could use that trailer for cover" before i remembered i wasnt a Black-ops team member.

What an awesome game that stays on my shelf still.

God of war II has my attention for now, but Black will be back as soon as enough time has passed that i cant remember where the enemies spawn from......

:irked:👍

If you like FPS'sssss..... then this is the one for you.

Takes a while to get into the mindset of destroying everything you can because you can, but after you've passed that part, you just get lost in it.

And yes, in places it is wayyyyyy too hard, but just slow down, pick them off and learn to conserve and feel the tension....

It would be nice to be in a position where i havent even played the game yet.

if you know what i mean

:irked:👍

I blame you Dave for getting me into Black :irked:

If only i had the time and motivation to sit through another 1.5 hours of the last level to actually finally finish the game!
