Nicest part of hell
I usally dont like to talk about me problems here but something strange is going on with me and I dont know what to do.

Since a year or so I ve got a strange problem out of nowhere: I get blackouts but I dont know the reason why. It all began during walk in the woods, I was walking down a woody path I felt pretty good and just ate and drunk at a restaurant and suddenly I lost control about my body for about two seconds; my knees folded and it almost felt like my brain was totally disconnected from everything, even my brain was thinking absolutely nothing during that blackout: though I still could see. It felt like my brain stopped working for seconds.
I almost collapsed and just catched myself before hitting the ground. My heart was beating like a jackhammer and after I sat down I felt like nothing happened. That happened about twenty times this year and it also happened a week ago while I was cycling causing me to crash pretty bad. The only other thing happening I am not as good at remembering stuff as I was some years ago.

I had two breakdowns in my life but they felt completely different, they werent happening that suddenly and I didnt loose control about everything like like that. My blackout feels like a bullet hits my brain for a second or a hammer hits my head.....or so

A was at specialist but he couldnt find any signs for cancer or brain tumor and my blood is ok as is my weight, CT and my whole body. He told my that it may be psychological and sent me to a psychologist. But I feel alright.....although the time between the blackouts decreases.

I am very afraid I'll have a blackout during my driving license tests, I am gonna be screwed if that happens.

The funny thing is, I dont drink much alcahol, I dont take drugs, my sleep is alright and my life is not very stressy.

I know its my problem , but maybe someone here experienced the same thing, maybe its something completely banal...

GO TO ANOTHER DOCTOR. Immediately. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

This isn't something you just give up on, particularly if the frequency is increasing. There are just too many things that can cause unexplained blackouts that you cannot afford to let it go untreated.

Also, if you're getting blackouts, you should not be granted your license, whether you have one during your test or not. It's not safe in any way to drive if you're suffering from blackouts.

^^^

This is a wise man. Take his advice.

It sounds like you are putting yourself in danger as it is, let alone hurting others with a car. That bike crash definitely should get you to act on this.

The neural specialist was almost laughing at me, he couldnt find anything wrong and told me -between the lines- that It could be that I am mentally disturbed and he sent me to a psychologist? What can I do? My CT is ok like my blood and everything else. They sent my blood probes to the main laboratory in my country and even they found nothing unusal. (needless to say that it was VERY expensive - 300$) The whole procedure took me three weeks and I dont want to do - and I cannot do it again - I was at the best specialists and they found nothing, and I cant stop working for another 3 weeks!

Calm down, I'll make my driving license next year - june. I hope to solve that problem until then.

Did you go to the psychiatrist?

I would really recommend trying to get this resolved. If they are becoming more and more common, you will eventually have a huge issue on your hands. It would be best to fix it now so that you don't have a big, hard-to-solve problem later.

Did you go to the psychiatrist?.

Not yet, but I was at psychologist a few weeks ago where I had a two hour session because I made my federal firearms license and the analysis was absolutely positive. I dont feel to get another session without any results just to throw 100 bucks out of the window.

$100 or $300 for medical tests/visits is nothing in the face of preventing what could be a severe stroke/tumor etc. I'd definitely get a second opinion.

Look at it this way. You know for a fact that something is wrong. You also know that it could be life threatening. Do not rest until you figure it out and do not let anyone convince you that it's normal.

I get the exact same thing, usually after I eat, though mine has been staying at a constant level (Once every 4-10 days), and instead of my sight staying the same, it gets all colorful dots (imagine the "rainbow" filter on eyetoy play), my moms chiropractor said it might be vertigo, anybody else have an idea?

From,
Chris.

does your heart feel funny during these episodes? i could be that your heart kicks out, and the blood becomes deoxygenated, and you black out.

I get that kind of thing quite a bit. Standing up will force all the blood to rush out of your head, causing you to feel "weird," like you are about to black out but then goes away relatively quickly. I would say that that is perfectly normal, you probably just get it worse than others.

I've never had an official blackout, which (considering my drug & alcohol use) is quite odd. There are times when i wish i could have been blacked out, but i'm one of those people who are constantly aware of everything around me (to the point that i can't shut my head up at times).

While i've never had an official blackout, i have had a few episodes where i'll bend over to pick something up, and when i rise i see stars everywhere and my head gets all dizzy :yuck: But whenever this happens, i can always blame it on something i've done within the past few hours (either strong coffee or pot)

But yeah, i'll echo the others: get a second opinion. Do some research beforehand to make sure the doc you're going to see specializes in what you're experiencing.

Sounds like a job for Greg House...

But anyway, my Nan used to have similair problems, and they turned out to be mini-strokes. :indiff:

Do you think it might be "food" related. you might have a food allergy. Have you eaten the same food before the blackouts? Maybe some other allergy; been at the same place before the blackouts. The allergic reaction could come and go quickly. Would it be hard for you to get a blood sample right after a blackout then have the sample tested for any reactions.

That's a sudden drop of your blood pressure.

...i was gonna add this but looks like you already did. 👍 Also, do you drink lots of coffee? Are you (possibly) diabetic? Do you also suffer migraines?

Michael88: I hope you've been given an ECG to check all is ok with your heart? Blackouts can be a sign of something called Long QT syndrome although I doubt this is what is wrong with you. Have you been tested for epilepsy? I'm amazed your doctor has stopped doing tests and told you it's psychological! As others have said, get a second opinion. Even if it turns out to be nothing serious, at least EVERYTHING has been checked for.
Low blood pressure can also cause momentary blackouts, I have postural hypotension which means sometimes when I stand up my body goes all heavy and I feel as if i'm about to pass out, it also happens sometimes when i'm doing any sort of strenuous activity. Do you get swimming things in front of your eyes? Indeed, has your BP been checked at all?

edited to say The symptoms you describe certainly don't sound like an allergy so i'd discount that idea. No offence to anyone who has suggested it.

First thanks to all of you for trying the help me, I really appreciate it. :)

Do you think it might be "food" related
Well, thats what I thought first, I paid a lot of attention what I eat and drink and came to no conclusion. Sometimes it happened after breakfest, once it happened after a whole day without any food at all, and it also happened at a normal day several times with normal food. I dont have any allergies at all (every time the docs looked at my blood they couldnt see an allergic reactions to plants, food, animals etc) - except walnuts, but I really pay attention not to eat any food with walnuts in it and the ractions I get after eating walnuts is completely different than having blackouts.
I dont know if its time related, but if I remember correctly it often happened in the late afternoon.
But anyway, my Nan used to have similair problems, and they turned out to be mini-strokes.
Iam way too young for that, no I never had any head injuries and I am not fat at all!:scared:
...i was gonna add this but looks like you already did. Also, do you drink lots of coffee? Are you (possibly) diabetic? Do you also suffer migraines?
I dont eat and drink stuff with coffaine since I always tend to have a bit high blood pressure (not dangerous high). I really dont need coffeine, I am hot-blooded enough even without it.
ECG to check all is ok with your heart?
My blood pressure is always a bit high, but thats heritage. The doctor said my ECG is very good, in fact my heart is a bit big and pumps very strong hence my high blood pressure. But I never had any problems caused by high blood pressure. I even got a CT from my heart.
Have you been tested for epilepsy?
Yes I had to stare at a fast flickering light while the neurologist looked at my brain waves but everything was alright.
Do you get swimming things in front of your eyes? Indeed, has your BP been checked at all?
No, during the blackouts I had crystal clear vision, but sometimes when I close my eyes I see stars and sparks, But thats comes from sitting in front of the computer all day long at work.

BP? Black Powder? ;)

But what really annoys me is my annoying spelling-memory loss, since some months I lost a lot little complex words. I dont notice it at everyday living but while discussing with people I always have to stop during a sentence because I cannot remember some dang words like ''periphery'' or ''screw housing'' and get totally stuck.

But I already have a date with a doc, I'll go to the hospital for a week or so to get a complete body-check in my christmas holidays.

Iam way too young for that,
No, you are not. I had a stroke at 14. It is a common misconception that strokes can only affect old people. It could be an aneuryism, which can strike at any age. Epilepsy commonly shows its ugly head in adolescence. Just becuase something is mostly common in old people do not assume that you are too young.

Let me give you a run down of my problems:
Born with multiple heart issues
Stroke at 14, which caused temporary paralysis, that I did not 100% recover from, and epilepsy
Colonitis at 21
Atrial fibrilation at 26

Most of these are considered old people issues. You are never too young for anything.

Yes I had to stare at a fast flickering light while the neurologist looked at my brain waves but everything was alright.
With all the wires glued to your head? God, that's annoying. After 14 years of no strokes I still have "irregular brain activity."

This could be something or nothing.

Sucks that it is over Christmas, but this is not something that you can play around with.

I get that. Sometimes pretty bad so I'm on the verge of collapse. I can't see a thing during the few seconds it happens - all I see it lots of bright white dots all over my vision.

As for the original post, I also suggest getting a second opinion. As I mentioned sometime back in another thread, my Grandma was told by the Doctor she had Irritable Bowl Syndrome, and was put on some medication. The medication wasn't doing anything, and the doctor kept saying you need to give it more time and to try a different diet. She did keep saying she was going to move to a different Doctor, but it was too late - she then fell ill and was diagnosed with a rare cancer. She was too weak to then be helped by kimopherapy, so sadly passed away.

Hmm, I suspect about that. I haven’t blackouts, but I have those “spelling-memory” losses, and I think it is from the computer. This may sound completely ridiculous, but standing in front of the computer screen tires the brain, and maybe that can be the problem. That’s way, they say to rest 5/10 minutes after being one hour in front of the computer screen. It is not just because of the eyes, but the brain. And some people are more liable than others. One good thing for that is puzzle/word games.

I hope it turns all to be ok,

LdS

<snip>

Was just about to post this. Certainly, you are never too young for such things.

Like FoolKiller, I suffered a stroke at an early age (15) as a result of acute sphenoid sinusitus. Long story short, CT scans were misread, I was misdiagnosed and told I had a psychological disorder. Some time later, I was on an operating table about an hour away from death. Instead of the doctor finding the infection early and simply draining the bacterial fluid from said sinus, it grew, burst and destroyed parts of my brain and body that I'll never get back. Please, get a second and even third opinion if you have to -- whatever it takes. Just because they don't see anything doesn't mean there's nothing there to worry about. Take care of number one.

Michael88: Last week my friends dad just "passed out" for supposedly no reason while driving (hitting many other cars and objects before flipping to a stop).... in short the highway was closed down for an hour and he was airlifted to the hospital. Now, if he lives, he will face years of physical therapy if he isn't some sort of cripple. Its really a shame he is a real jolly man.:nervous: Thankfully he was the only one seriously injured.

I passed out twice in my life one during soccer when I didn't eat all day and played the whole game and passed out right at the end. The worse one was after I got my taken, I passed out (no food and lack of ) and when I woke up my ears were ringing my eyes were all fuzzy and I was very wobbly and unstable. The doctor says its normal though, it happens to alot of people.... usually men:ouch:.

But seriously dude, get that checked out.

That happens to me too. When I stand up from sitting down I sometimes end up "seeing stars" or my vision blackens for a second and feel light headed. I think its from a lack of potassium (thats what mom says:)).

To point out the obvious, you shouldn't be blacking out. So make sure you are seeing doctors until the problem is diagnosed and sorted. Good luck Michael.

A friend of mine had these, turned out to be stress related.

But this is a forum and not a doctor's office, so don't accept any answers you read here.

GO TO ANOTHER DOCTOR.

Because doctors are not all-knowing. Second opinions are good.

I sometimes get a kinda head rush when I stand up, although that's usually due to dehydration, and it's more of a headache than anything.

But yeah, blackouts aren't good. Deffo go and see some more people about it.
